Robert never got to have children or grandchildren, or grow old with his wife. I was only born because he died, so I feel an obligation to honour his memory and say his name. I wish I could tell him that he is remembered.

Every Remembrance Sunday, I light a candle to Robert Ramsay, a man I never met and am not related to. He was married to my great-grandmother for only 4 years, and was killed in action in Belgium in 1916. After the war, she married my great-grandad (1)
The First World War miraculously produced all sorts of high culture. But every year on this day it is worth watching the ending of the greatest sitcom, which somehow managed to catch the tone of remembrance exactly, perfectly right.

More stop and search powers wouldn’t have stopped this train knife attack. What did make a difference was having a train manager present and going beyond the call of duty. All parties should now rule out plans to cut train managers.
