Hey #Flyfolk, we're pleased to share our reporter for ERK signalling using the Kinase Translocation Reporter technique from @RegotLab. It works in flies! Here's the preprint https://t.co/DqzT4DqEZR and stocks will be available soon from @flystocks

(3) Programmed cell death in the brain is assumed to be regulated intrinsically when stereotyped and predictable vs. extrinsically when stochastic. We show that in the lamina tissue architecture can establish stereotyped patterns of apoptosis in response to extrinsic signals.

(2) Besides regulating proliferation or survival, neuronal numbers can be set by regulating the number of neural precursors induced to differentiate. Tissue architecture and feedback inhibition by newly born neurons limit differentiation signals from glia to do so in the lamina.

(1) Growing neurons (and not just stable epithelial ligand sources) can establish instructive signalling gradients to control the neuronal diversity their target field. Specifically, we show that photoreceptors establish a Hh signalling gradient that patterns lamina precursors.

Precise neuronal numbers are required for circuit formation and function. Known strategies to control neuronal numbers involve regulating either cell proliferation or survival. In the developing...

A tragic, thoughtful, beautifully written story by @sarahzhang on the importance of glia in brain development. #RareDiseases

Microglia make up 10 percent of the brain, and an extremely rare case shows just how important they are.
