Similarly, despite the revelations of reporting, Mayor Bowser told reporters she had not actually read the findings in-depth and immediately blamed parents for not doing their job - even though the District was not doing its own.

It seems unfair to pretend DC residents had no issue with crime - the fear of violence is traumatizing a generation of students. But the reporting showed Trump’s efforts continue to ignore the systemic issues that fuel problems with crime.

My colleagues also found that social services and rehabilitative services - again things known to make a difference - were lacking after a youth becomes court involved.

The issue that people continually pointed to was addressing truancy in middle schools. Our reporting showed that DC failed to invest in afterschool programs & psychological services and fix mangled protocols that experts said would help prevent crime before it starts.

The reporting revealed that most experts questioned whether harsher sentences would address the problems that led young people - who drove the crime wave in 2023 - to commit crimes.
