Imagine teaching your child the alphabet for 6 years before introducing them to stories and books. That's how we teach math. We teach the basic letters and operations grades K-5 THEN we begin to introduce the basic stories it can tell (algebra). #iteachmath #edchat (1/2)

US hasn't had GDP growth >2.5 since before Obama became deporter in chief in '09. Immigration has been consistently lower since then vs the 80s/90s/early 00s. Avg GDP growth '80-2004 ~3.2%, 2008-now: 2.3%. Dems should be like Reagan/Clinton: open borders & free trade=growth!

Immigrants are twice as likely to start a business as native-born Americans, an entrepreneurial boost that fuels even greater demand for labor. https://t.co/WW0sPsYmpO

Immigrants make up a large share of the homebuilding workforce. Without them, our national housing shortage would be even worse. And…contrary to popular myths about immigrants taking jobs, these immigrants complement rather than substitute for native-born construction workers.

Look at the average GDP growth when immigrant populations were increasing (1981-2004) we averaged 3.2% growth vs flat or decreasing (2009-2020) it was 2.3% growth. If you're "Make America Great Again" and want a strong economy, bring back the immigrants.

Tangential thoughts: if concerns on immigration are rooted in economic terms, would it help change swing voters minds if they looked at immigration/GDP data? Look at immigration under Reagan/Bush/Clinton/Bush vs Obama/Trump. Clear trend that immigration helps GDP growth.

The ugliness of Vance's attack on immigrants is the point. Because it's vile, it generates media coverage on a favorable issue. The bet is: Even if voters disapprove of this behavior, it will reinforce their sense that Rs are "tough" on immigration https://t.co/F3TNqwaaaI

1) I don't think there's that much strategy going on here. 2) I think swing voters will be more influenced by how many people are laughing AT them about this one. 3) I don't have my pulse on any swing voters here in Charlotte/or my sphere so I'm curious how this one plays out.

The idea of the gov't picking "types" of immigrants to allow is basically the same argument that the government should pick which companies survive recessions. Let ppl come legally. Legal immigration means fairer competition, smaller black market and legal opportunities to grow.

This is why high-skilled immigration matters so much: Immigrants bring talent and knowledge that complements American workers and helps us build more here in the US.

@ryanbdrm @mattyglesias Freedom of movement makes it easier to undermine authoritarian regimes and boost global GDP. Let people move from where output is low to where output is high and help expand output there. Often there isn't a GDP penalty if they were unemployed/under employed before moving.

@ryanbdrm @mattyglesias If capital/goods can move (and yes they should be able to because it makes almost everyone's lives better), people should also be able to move as a response to changes in the market. Freeing capital but not people means that the capital/goods can be optimized but labor can't.

When YIMBY-skeptics complain that developers skew much of their building toward the high end of the market, what they’re often not seeing is that there are a lot of regulations pushing them to do that. Minimum lot sizes are a big one on this, particularly in suburban areas.

So then what happens is that someone with a limited budget walks up to the deli trying to buy a basic turkey/cheese for lunch and the only sandwiches available are super fancy sandwiches on 8 slices of bread. The 8 slices of bread rule killed the starter sandwich. 6/7

Do drivers who get e-bikes drive less? Where cycling networks are ample, the answer is yes. Qi Sun et al. explain. One policy implication: where cycling networks are poor, public funds now subsidizing battery-electric cars would often be better spent on cycling accommodations.

Manolo Betancur says today his small bakery, located in one of Charlotte's most diverse neighborhoods, is just two minutes away from “the center of the war on diversity and minorities.” “If Donald Trump, J.D. Vance wins this November, everything I have built is at risk.”
