5 years ago Milton Keynes was dubbed ‘tent city’ by the media. Today, no one needs to sleep rough on our streets. How did we do it? A thread by the Cabinet Member responsible 👇
🚨NEW. Suella Braverman pushes to restrict tents for rough sleepers, and proposes making it a civil office for charities to give tents to homeless via
@FT
with
@LOS_Fisher
For starters we didn’t make tents a civil offence. Tents are a symptom, not the cause. Firstly you need somewhere that people can go so we built a shelter on the top floor of the old bus station. On the ground floor we brought together all voluntary and statutory services 2/11
Let’s talk more about the underlying problems: lack of mental health provision, cuts in addiction treatment, lack of affordable housing and many other issues this government has made worse over 13 years in power 10/11
The hairdressers and laundry means they can regain self respect. The number of people who have gone on from the Old Bus Station into employment and their own place is incredible because of the hard work of staff and volunteers 5/11
So making tents a civil offence, creating a record is not the way to end rough sleeping Suella Braverman. Bringing together services both statutory and voluntary to embrace someone and help them up is the only road to success. 9/11
So everyone has a warm and safe bed for the night and in the morning, they have access to all the services they might need from a cuppa and a friend to a GP and mental health services. This was no easy feat to get all homeless services to work together but it creates success 3/11
People who sleep rough lead chaotic lives and are very vulnerable to exploitation. They often have mental health conditions and self medicate to survive. Having services under one roof means they do not fall between the gaps and are treated as a whole person 4/11
We still get many who do not succeed but we are there to catch them again. If you have been living on the streets for years, one night in a shelter is not going to solve all your problems. It takes persistence, patience and understanding 6/11
Instead we need to support them. We need to remain humble and not treat them like children. Homelessness can happen to any of us. We must not forget this 8/11
We still have some people that refuse to come in. 16 at last count to be precise. They are well known to the Council and are visited everyday to ask if they will accept help. My hope is one day they will. But if we force them, we are setting them up to fail. 7/11
@THE_Chris_Evans
@TheLastPersont2
I agree. We have 16 entrenched rough sleepers in MK. Everyday they are visited by the council offering a place to stay. There are many different reasons they refuse but it doesn’t mean we stop trying. One day they will be ready to make that step
@Markdolling
Many of them have housing or are refusing help but they do get offered. Unfortunately outside the bus station is a very profitable place to beg to support habits and make deals. We are trying different tactics with
@tvp_mk
to deal with the issue
Compassion, not cruelty, is the answer to rough sleeping – we have the proof in Milton Keynes. ICYMI my thread here is more on how we can be successful. I am so proud of the team in MK

MK is a place people from across the world come to build a better life — it's where I call home and where I've made a difference.
But we're being let down by the Tories.
We deserve an MP who stands up for us and delivers real change.

This is appalling. An MP trying to stoke hate, fear and Islamophobia. We are better than this and I hope the nation will call this abhorrent racism for what it is. The country is a mess and that is why we must come together not become divided

Tory MP Lee Anderson discussing Sadiq Khan on GB News:
“He’s given our capital city away to his mates”:
“I don’t actually believe that the Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is they’ve got control of Khan, and they’ve got control of London."
What a disgrace! Both MK MPs have voted FOR fracking tonight. What I want to know is if they were one of the MPs that were “physically manhandled” into the lobbies or were they happy to vote for fracking?

So great to welcome Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper to Milton Keynes yesterday to talk about the impact that knife crime is having on our city. With

we will tackle and prevent knife crime from ruining our children’s lives

there needs to be longer term funding for youth services, but the economy is "broken"
Sir Keir spoke exclusively to ITV News about his plan to tackle knife crime
So proud of Milton Keynes. The generosity of everyone to support the Afghan families who are coming through MK on their way to settle in the UK has been overwhelming. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I’ve two questions for
@iainastewart
1) does he still choose to support a PM who has had 2 police fines in a year, a Deputy PM who has 8 bullying allegations, a Party Chair/ex-Chx who doesnt pay his tax bills on time, a Baroness who steals from the public purse with dodgy PPE?
The Tories have gone from clapping nurses during the pandemic to threatening to sack them for striking. Why not sit down and negotiate with public sector workers and these strikes could be avoided? Instead they chose the nuclear option to take away a basic fundamental right
MK’s two Tory MPs voted to threaten nurses and other key workers with the sack if they exercise their right to strike. They undervalue, under pay them and then want to take away their rights. No wonder we are having a recruitment and retention crisis
