✨david tennant and catherine tate being chaotic besties✨, on screen and off, in character and out - a thread
updated d̶a̶i̶l̶y̶ whenever I feel like it 😌
y'know, the critics who say
#tedlasso
is aimless and unfocused this season can stay mad because this show isn't for them. it's for those of us who have listened, and paid attention, and loved and invested our hearts into these characters. the payoff in Season 3? glorious 🥹🥹🥹
The sluttiest thing a man can do is walk 500 miles & then immediately proceed to walk 500 more, just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.
in yet another instance of
#tedlasso
giving me what I needed, not what I wanted - I thought I had to see Ted forgive Nate. but of course, the one thing Ted has always been able to do, with his huge heart, is forgive. he's already forgiven Nate. but I NEEDED to see Beard do it.
spends a billion years running away from his best friend, all the while heartbroken and missing her like crazy, finally finds her again and her brain doesn't explode, IMMEDIATELY trolls her
no notes, truly the best friendship dynamic ever
the writing is so lovely here & so beautifully performed by Tennant & Tate that I'm still surprised when people find Donna abrasive & hard to like in Runaway Bride. she's so disarmingly real here, already so perceptive when it comes to this alien who will become her best friend
the best thing about having access to the scripts is finding out just how much of the Doctor & Donna dynamic is scripted - and how some of its loveliest, tiniest moments are truly down to the magic alchemy and chemistry of tennant and tate. this little moment is so PERFECTLY them
I am losing my mind at the contestants who went with David Tennant as the Eleventh Doctor IN FRONT OF DAVID TENNANT HIMSELF, who had just nerd-smashed a lore question about HIS OWN FATHER-IN-LAW'S COLOUR-CHANGING STALK OF CELERY 😂😂😂
A question about
#DoctorWho
AND his father-in-law - David Tennant can't mess this up, can he? Find out what happens when he's quizzed on the Fifth Doctor on Rob Beckett's Smart TV 👇
the not-things are INCREDIBLE, of course, but just watch 14 & Donna here and how beautifully David & Catherine play that electric chemistry between them. she's trying to STOP him in the face of terrible danger and his mind can't stop running a million miles ahead. it's SO clever
literally ALWAYS them, benedick and especially beatrice, because she persists in being a sharp, difficult, unconventional woman at a time when she should be none of those things to be happy, and benedick realises he would live - and die - to help her stay true to her convictions
the opening of this episode with Ted strolling through Richmond was so lovely - that was PURE Cheers vibes, where everyone knows your name
and he corrected his mom on 'Mancunian'
TED LASSO. SIR. YOU ARE ALREADY HOME. YOU JUST NEED TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
the way tennant played 14 as different from 10 will be better appreciated in time to come, I think. 10 was always a heartbreaking mix of humanity and hubris. 14, otoh, settles into that humanity, and tempers it with humility. it's why he can stop, and rest, while 10 could never.
oh juno tapped OUT. maybe this is part of the reason she's barely done any press for S3 lol. because the writing for her character especially is so fucking erratic - disrespectful - she's been treated like a love trophy for 2 seasons now. can't imagine that's fun to talk about!
catherine tate did not play this scene, this episode and this role with her entire heart and soul to be disrespected pls
she is SO devastatingly good here - playing every shade of donna's bravery, hope, fear & terror, as she fights for a world she doesn't even remember
#doctorwho
Remember when RTD gave Catherine Tate, an actor most people saw just as a comedian, a stand-alone episode about how nuclear war would cause the government to send minorities to concentration camps, pairing her with Billie Piper, and some people still don’t rate it
rewatched this scene & it really is a masterclass in writing & performance. it treads so beautifully that fine line between humanising Rupert while not redeeming or forgiving him for so cruelly breaking Rebecca's heart
@AnthonySHead
is a marvel
#tedlasso
Only
@AnthonySHead
could play this scene so beautifully that in a few seconds he convinced me that Rupert actually loved Rebecca at one point. The first time ever when I didn’t only feel hate towards Rupert when he was on screen. The power of Anthony Head
#TedLasso
there's something so powerful about giving 14 - an older, more bone-weary version of the doctor who so desperately longed to be human - a home at last, with his best friend. sometimes, after all the fighting & the heartbreak, a happy ending is possible. so grab it, and live it.
What was your favourite thing about all of 2023 Doctor Who?
It could be an episode, a scene, music, a performance, a short, an anniversary celebration, a trailer, behind the scenes content - anything!
#DoctorWho
@TenTennants
YES OMG THE WAY HE MADE SURE WILF HAD THE SUN ROOM ON THE GROUND FLOOR 😭😭🥹🥹😭😭🥹🥹 the Doctor said I'm staying put and you all are staying with me 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
"Donna doesn't want the drama... she wants her best friend... What she wants is to bring the Doctor home and to ground him the way she needed to ground herself. That's how she saves him."

ct: TWAT!!!
dt: i'm not!!! i'm standing here!!
russell t davies watched much ado about nothing the same night as I did and he, like me, imprinted so mightily on that hand-kiss scene between benedick and beatrice that he wrote it into wild blue yonder 10+ years later in this essay i will
this is why, in both the writing & performance of it, I don't think any other companion could have credibly called the doctor home. only catherine tate's donna (who burst into the show, shook it up and reframed how FUNNY it could be) has the ability to rewrite the doctor's story
Catherine Tate's performance in the Giggle is underappreciated. It may not be as meaty as previous scripts but there's something beautifully subtle yet with emotional weight that is the beating heart of this episode in the way she grounds an emotionally vulnerable Doctor to Earth
Rebecca Welton taking that little girl and her heart into that room of rich selfish men, scolding them all like the little boys they were and still are, and finding the heart and courage and passion to speak for HER team, her chosen family? my superhero will ALWAYS BE FAMOUS 🥹😭
THE WAY REBECCA CALLED TED WITH "INFO" BUT REALLY JUST SPENT THE WHOLE TIME FLIRTING - UH, I MEAN - CORRECTING HIS MALAPR0PISMS AND MISPRONUNCIATIONS AND ADVISING HIM TO MOVE ON FROM HIS EX-WIFE AND ENJOY HIS TIME IN THE NOW WITH HIS SON
THAT'S WIFE/MOM BEHAVIOUR ACTUALLY
where, I ask you, WHERE is my odd couple buddy episode starring Rebecca and Beard trying to surprise Ted with a birthday party but he ends up having to post bail for them both
I will be suing you for emotional damages, Suitcase Man!!! this reverse truth bomb is INSANE because Rebecca is, once again, so FULL OF INTENTION about their relationship?! SHE remembered truth bomb time? SHE came to check in with him? only for him to go - HEY. MY TURN. 😱😭🆘
yeah remember how s2 deconstructed toxic masculinity by showing us that roy - a seemingly uncommunicative grunty footballer who swore a lot - actually had a yoga ladies' group, learned how to give keeley space when she needed it & was the sweetest uncle to phoebe? ALL GONE IN S3!
remember how keeley and roy were so mature in s2 and learned to have great communication and roy just fucking adored keeley and they were wonderful til the writers got bored and gave him an insecurity that he hadn’t expressed in the relationship like ever
all i could have asked for: david tennant doing an unboxing video when he has no idea what those are, has none of the necessary tools on hand, and is just quite charmingly clueless about it all
do you ever have emotions about how this is likely the first act of kindness donna can remember receiving from someone else in a really long time? apart from wilf, donna has just been looking for affection, love, ANYTHING from others - and always comes up empty. but here he is 🥹
catherine tate's range as an actor is remarkable and profound and on full glorious display here. the way she differentiates donna and not!donna! the soul-shattering terror and fear she shows us, which somehow makes us all believe, for a split second, that donna is truly done for
remember how just a couple weeks ago we were like omggggg bring "biscuits with the boss" back from the war, where have these moments between Ted and Rebecca gone 😣 and it turns out they've been having them all along and we get treated with TWO of them in 3x10 and they are LACED
catherine tate and david tennant having a shakespeare quote-off on the graham norton show
ct: i won that! i won that!
dt: not that you're competitive at all!
today I'm thinking about this perfect acting choice by catherine tate in the star beast, as donna sees the TARDIS again for the first time in 15 years. you can't even see donna's face, but you can FEEL so much in the way she greets this blue box like her home, like an old friend
highly recommend enjoying a pair of middle-aged actors from the very first moment they start working together, because every time they reunite in years to come, they are *even more middle-aged* and consequently even hotter than before 🔥😎
when i tell you i have SO MANY emotions about donna getting her memories back and, instead of focusing on herself, she instantly clocks that her silly spaceman has been through the Horrors™, keeps trying to get him to talk about it, and then just resolves to save him herself 😭
do you ever go full-on crazy at the thought that these idiots had basically 14++ episodes together and they imprinted on each other so powerfully that we imprinted on them too 😭 and their bond, that bestie connection, was SO PROFOUND that their ending in the specials MAKES SENSE
"you just want to *MATE*?!?!?"
is seared into my soul but really the diamond-sharp line delivery by both Tennant and Tate throughout this scene is a joy to witness
this season has had its odd moments, pacing is kinda whack & who knows where everything's going but let's be real the one true constant is Phil Dunster's incandescent superstar performance as Jamie Tartt. the heart, the humour, the heartbreak and the GROWTH. ENGRAVE HIS EMMY NOW!
catherine tate on her chemistry with david tennant: "we didn't even know how we were gonna gel together" because they didn't manage to have the customary table read for the runaway bride. but "it just clicked" from their very first scene together up on the rooftop ⬇️
#doctorwho
david tennant goes on a fairly dismissive rant about catherine tate's love of astrology
ct: this is from someone who believes in space!!
dt: I've always had a very clear delineation between fantasy and reality, thank you!
ct: don't... don't clap that, come on!
🐏♈🤣
nobody picks up strays like donna noble 😹 she really got her memories back after 15 years and, in the space of 15 HOURS, she meets this older, even more bedraggled and pathetic version of the stray she met on her first wedding day, and just says "you can come on home, you idiot"
✨post something dance-y✨
don't mind if I do!! david tennant and catherine tate dance up a storm in the final scene of much ado about nothing (2011) 🤩
#pureserotonin
what fascinates me is seeing all the comments that 10 was so "vain" for not wanting to go & I'm like??? no. the defining characteristic of this Doctor is how HUMAN he is & wanted to be. that's his entire narrative arc - he wanted so badly to be the one who gets to live, with Rose
Sorry y’all I’m putting my foot down a little bit on the “this only applies to 10” counter cuz while I grant other versions might view it differently than 10, the 9th Doctor also spoke about regeneration as him dying and someone else taking over, he was just more at peace with it
david tennant and catherine tate playing cards - not competitively at all - on the set of series 4 of
#doctorwho
dt: YES! YES! now that's how you play a game of cards!!
ct: he's still three behind me 😌😏
"maybe in another life-" WHY NOT IN THIS ONE WHY IS HAPPINESS ALWAYS SO FAR AWAY AND SO HARD TO ACHIEVE WHY DO WE ALWAYS MAKE EVERYTHING SO COMPLICATED
a little 🧵 on catherine tate playing to win because why not
"I WON THAT! I WON THAT!" she declares gleefully after a shakespeare quote-off
"not that you're competitive at all," observes david tennant wryly
there is a staggering depth of heart and humanity in
#tedlasso
that we've all connected with over the years - its determination to see the best in people, the light amidst their shadows, the hope that can keep them going through their heartbreak.
#amsterdam
does all that and more
can you believe the finale included a throuple but NOT THIS ONE, THE ONE THAT WOULD ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN INTERESTING AND A GREAT PAY-OFF COMPARED TO THE SHITTY LOVE TRIANGLE REDUX WE GOT
Some people have been loving each other for several lifetimes and it shows. The effortless energy between them? The casual shorthand? The conversations held through eye contact alone? They’ve met before and they’ll meet again.

the dark twisted genius of this arc is that 10 is spinning out here, broken from the loss of donna, hurting that he couldn't save his best friend without killing her in another way - by taking her memories, taking herself & him & THEM away from donna, & removing her from his side
Some people have so much chemistry there’s just no way it’s their first life together. Their souls must have loved each other multiples times before. The vibes are too strong to shake.
