I’m no lawyer but this kinda makes sense to me. Leave ambiguity to the economists.
Shout out to the kiwis here: The NZ Crimes Act 1961 codified the criminal law & eradicated all common law crimes. This is constitutionally sound: all crimes should be written, unambiguous, changed only prospectively, on prior notice. It is absurd that, in the UK, they are not.

@rodbishop15 And they extended the Warm Homes Discount Most people don't understand how this works. It goes like this... Step 1. Energy supplier asks the DWP which of its customers are eligible for the WHD Step 2. The supplier calculates the cost of the discount, adds an admin fee and

Could anything be more stupid than the row over BAFTA? Yes, you invite someone with Tourettes to a ceremony featuring a film based on his life and he exhibits the exact behaviour the film is based on and it's the BBC's fault?

No. You moved £90 of that £150 on to general taxation, which isn't a saving at all. You've added £66 of network costs. And gas prices have fallen by more than bills.
1/ Government is about choices. Last autumn at the Budget, we decided to raise taxes on the wealthiest so we could take £150 of costs off energy bills. Today it has been confirmed that the energy price cap will fall by 7% from April. https://t.co/3pTHyI8oMk

.@CPSThinkTank has a big new paper out today on the energy markets. There's all sorts of stuff in there, but the thing that leapt out at me looking at the charts is that Britain has spent the last 20 years perfecting a form of energy austerity. (1/?)

Student uprisings on university campuses all over Iran today. Tear gassed, suppressed and yet still they gather. In light of the tens of thousands murdered recently for protesting, with a clear risk to their lives, this can only be described as an unprecedented display of ultra
For a Western observer, it is extremely difficult to understand what is happening in Iran. How is it possible that just a few weeks after the massacre of tens of thousands, young people risk their lives and begin a new wave of protests? The answer to this question is simple:

Interesting pothole calculations based on the best data I can find. It underlines the basic principle that any engineer knows - maintenance is cheaper than repair. In road spend world, every £1 not spent early costs £4–£5 later in pothole repairs (AIA consensus) So looking at

This is excellent - wonderful pictures by Don McCullin. Well worth visiting! (And as ever, the Roth Bar and the Farmshop are added attractions to any visit..)
Now open: ‘Don McCullin. 90’. Marking the photographer’s 90th year, this presentation features seminal images spanning his seven-decade career. His only self-portrait, is exhibited for the first time in the UK, alongside two new images taken in 2026. 🔗 https://t.co/fmUyGhoRBi

Air passengers’ rights rules took effect 21 years ago today – well intended, but the law was dreadfully drafted and interpreted. Since then, the principle beneficiaries have been lawyers/claims-farming companies. Passengers – and airlines – deserve better. https://t.co/r17SYUZjl7

Agree with this but what we need is govt to scrap plans for a holiday tax altogether - no new taxes

I’ll freely admit I’m biased. Gabriel helped me with my first two books before his career went into the stratosphere. I laughably think of him as a protege even though he long since eclipsed my achievements. In my view he’s the best reporter on Fleet Street. He’s also a lovely
Not only is @Gabriel_Pogrund on of the best, fairest and most fearless journalists I know, he is also one of the best people. Everyone involved in trying to smear him, including this “source” using his faith to undermine his journalism, should be ashamed

WASPI women never had a case. Language of outrage around decision devalues where real outrage appropriate. MPs in opposition or on backbenches have been cynical in offering support for billions of compensation that was never going to be paid. https://t.co/5JTBlPFXyR

When each Wetherspoon pub is now paying over £1m in taxes, it is clear that businesses (especially in hospitality) are ludicrously overtaxed in the UK. No wonder they are collapsing daily under the weight of tax. They are being #TaxedOut

Almost unbearable to watch, except through tears of pride and sadness. Britain’s best of the best who fell in Afghanistan — very much on the frontline. Donald Trump should be force to watch this. Then go down on his knees and ask for their forgiveness.
