When I sent a text to Rebecca Lobo, picking her brain about who has the best shot at making a roster as a second or third round pick, her first reply said simply: Fair!
I agree.
Here's my list of late round picks I think will make a roster and why.
The Brittney Griner situation is a complete nightmare. With a denied appeal, she'll be moved to a Russian penal colonial and the possibility of her getting out anytime soon is bleak. Imagine.
If you can't feel some kind of empathy for her or her family, I just —
my heart hurts
The WNBA has received $75 million in new funding.
Nike, Baron Davis, Swin Cash, Pau Gasol, Ted Leonsis, Laurene Jobs Powell and Condoleezza Rice are some of the investors.
Funds to go towards marketing, promotion, globalization, operations and more.
Invest in women's sports
Viewership for the NCAA Women's Tournament so far is up 27% for the first round and 30% for the second round since last year.
Iowa’s win over Georgia was the most-watched early round game with a viewership of 1.5M
More accessible games = more viewers. It's that simple.
we don't talk enough about how Candace Parker is the only player in WNBA history to win both Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season and just how hard that is to do
CNN: "do people feel the risk factor investing in women and women's sports still?"
Serena: "I mean, there is no risk."
women's sports being a risky investment is a false narrative perpetuated by people who never gave them a legitimate opportunity to succeed in the first place
“I think women’s sport is having a moment that it always should’ve had.”
CNN Exclusive: 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams talks to
@AmandaDCNN
about the rise of women’s sport and revealed her interest in owning a WNBA team.
Telling players like Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark to turn down their emotional fire is like telling a lion not to roar.
It's who they are and it's part of their game. Their competitiveness on the court is infectious, not only for teammates but also the crowd. I love it.
Carson Pickett and Jo Jo Tidd met 5 years ago at an Orlando Pride game. The photo went viral.
Jo Jo, now 6, surprised Pickett for a pre-match interview (airing Saturday on ION at 7 pm ET, before an NWSL doubleheader). She had no idea.
Pickett now plays for Racing Louisville.
Here’s the thing. Do you think Michael Jordan was really thinking, yeah let’s hand this dude the keys to the kingdom when Kobe went pro?
Absolutely not.
So why would you think/expect WNBA goats to do it?
South Carolina quietly finished the regular season as the only undefeated team in Division I men's & women's college basketball (undefeated in back to back seasons).
Feels like this should be a bigger topic of conversation, especially with how good they've been since the start.
If you came for Caitlin Clark, hope you stayed for Duke's comeback/upset of Ohio State, SC's dominance, Milaysia Fuwiley, everything about Iowa State/Stanford, Jada Walker's breakout game for Baylor, Oregon State flying under the radar, etc.
Lots more to come. Lots to enjoy.
It's been evident for a few years now, but the WNBA is the most inclusive, unified, progressive, influential, forward-thinking & welcoming professional sports league of our time. The evolution of the W from its inception to now is incredible.
And it has all been player-driven
What's the endgame? So men who dislike the WNBA can puff up their chests and feel more secure?
The Aces are the best team in the WNBA, in women's basketball, which is a women's sports league, which is fun & exciting for women's basketball/sports fans. Why isn't that enough.
Ratings are in.
The WNBA had its most-watched regular season in 21 years.
Viewership across its national television partners (ABC, CBS, ESPN and ESPN2) was up 21 percent over the 2022 season.
Highest total attendance in 13 years.
Boom.
What Grant Wahl did for women's soccer as far as storytelling and increasing visibility — he set the bar. He was also an incredible human being. So shocked and saddened by this news.
According to an NIL deal report by
@sponsorunited
on the 2022-2023 college basketball season:
- women’s deals rose 186% YoY
- men’s deals rose 67% YoY
- Angel Reese has the most brand endorsements among both male/female college basketball players
Keep. Investing. In. women.
if you're a fan of Caitlin Clark's game and new to wbb, you would have gone wild for Chelsea Gray's magical playoff run in 2022
the WNBA has plenty of talent, jaw-dropping performances, swag, excitement and highlight-worthy plays
lock in and enjoy the show this season
A'ja Wilson is featured on Time's 2024 annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Tom Brady wrote the tribute:
"Wilson is not just an incredible athlete, she is also an inspiration to all who witness her talent and drive."
Bubbles worked. MLS, NHL and now NBA all had 0 positive COVID-19 tests of players and team personnel inside their respective bubbles. Quite a feat to say the least.
top women's bball players choosing to utilize the extra covid year and leverage NIL to make bank and perfect their craft, while also getting additional education for free and enjoying all the amenities of college life, instead of jumping to the WNBA is
a baller move IMO
Last week, TCU hosted open tryouts — in the middle of their season — due to multiple player injuries.
The Horned Frogs found out they had multiple state title-winning players enrolled on campus as normal students.
Now, they've been signed as walk-ons.
You never know what someone is going through, even those in the spotlight. Twitch had so much charisma on and off the floor. This was one of my fav routines he did on SYTYCD. He's one of the reasons I fell in love with the show. He could dance to anything.
A SportsCenter ad with Caitlin Clark as an intern, lounging in a cubicle tossing crumpled papers into a garbage can. Andraya Carter and Elle Duncan walk by.
Elle: she's done already?
Andraya: broke the record in filing, stacking and stapling on the first day
Elle: overachiever
In case you thought the viewers weren't there before:
In 1995, 7.4 million people watched UConn beat Tennessee in the final on CBS. ESPN took over the rights. It took 28 years for the championship to get back on network television. More from
@linzsports
Caitlin Clark just cemented herself as the 2023 Player of the Year.
The stats, the numbers against top 25 competition, the winning shots, the improved efficiency overall.
Just. Wow.
Reporter: 🫶
Caitlin Clark: "You like that?"
Reporter: "I like that you're here."
Caitlin: "Yeah, I do that at my family after every game.”
Reporter: "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine."
Caitlin: 😳

gotta prepare new WNBA fans on the reality of how difficult it is to make a roster, especially for players taken outside of the first round. that's why the right fit matters so much. 12 teams, 144 spots (even less b/c of salary cap).
training camp cuts will be/are always brutal
dang
people who spent years ignoring the wnba, not giving it a chance, not paying attention, not knowing the history, unfamiliar with the demographic, unfamiliar with the players and teams, not grasping the growth and evolution, unfamiliar with its stars
sure have a lot to say
women's college basketball would be better served if ESPN put a dedicated reporter not on one specific player, but on the storylines that will unfold organically throughout the tournament
also, Caitlin Clark didn't ask for it. it's seems unnecessary and going a little overboard
Love, love, love
@RebeccaLobo
's idea of adding two practice player roster spots to every WNBA roster. Teams can draft for the future, have time to develop players, and can dip into it during the season when the bench is hindered due to injury.
A'ja Wilson talking unfiltered about her relationship with Dawn Staley is so pure. It's a true testament of how college coaches most certainly can have an impact on/provide guidance/share in the success/ support players at the pro level. Relationship doesn't end with graduation.
- Iowa vs. Louisville on ESPN peaked at 2.7 million viewers
- Elite Eight averaged 2.2 million viewers
- Women's March Madness viewership up 42% since last year
The women's sports train keeps on moving.
Jump on or get out of the way.
Looking at viewerships stats again for kicks.
WNBA Finals were up 15% from 2019 (average for the 2020 season was up 68%)
NWSL was up 493% (!!!)
The WNBA had more games on national television than ever before — NWSL's Challenge Cup was on CBS.
SHOW the game, GROW the game.
The women's CBB season may be over, but expect next year to be just as thrilling & viewership to continue to rise with
Angel Reese
Elizabeth Kitley
Caitlin Clark
Hailey Van Lith
Paige Bueckers
Azzi Fudd
Ayoka Lee
Cotie McMahon
Kiki Rice
Alissa Pili
Cameron Brink
and many more
The WNBA recently got rid of single-elimination playoff games and it was a good move. But I think it's time to also lengthen the first round series from 3 to 5 games. The interest/audience is there.
When the WNBA began, Cynthia Cooper was 34.
She led the league in scoring 3 years in a row, is the only back-to-back MVP (1997 and 1998), and the only 4X Finals MVP.
One can only imagine what she would have accomplished had she been drafted in the WNBA right out of college.
gotta say ESPN's coverage of the sweet sixteen was the best it's been. spacing out the games, pre and postgame coverage, studio team was incredible, and sideline info during games was balanced
ESPN didn’t start showing every game in the women’s ncaa tournament until 4 years ago. Before last year, the women’s final was last aired on ABC in 1995.
This is why we’ve been saying this change/increase in ratings/fans/coverage would/should have happened much sooner.
Here is ESPN's coverage of the 2010 women's basketball tournament. No ABC games, "whiparound coverage," a lack of national coverage for the first two rounds.
Stay for the next tweet (1/2).
early WNBA marketing included:
- injecting fear into the league's LGBTQ+ players to stay closeted
- feminizing ALL players
- appealing to straight male fanbase
- girl next store image
And it flopped.
What HAS worked?
- authenticity
- focus on basketball
- players having a voice
.
@S10Bird
speaks for the first time about the fear she felt as a young player in the WNBA to not come out publicly.
"It was basically told to me that the only way I was going to have success from a marketing standpoint is to really sell this straight, girl-next-door [image]. ...…
two things can be true at the same time:
1. what DT did tonight is WNBA history and deserves to be recognized/celebrated
2. what Skylar revealed today deserves to be recognized/respected and taken seriously by the WNBA/organization/media/etc.
keep thinking about the upcoming WNBA Draft and how this season more than any will show the WNBA has reached a tipping point between the amount of available talent and roster space. something's gotta give.
The Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year will all be on display in Friday's Iowa/South Carolina Final Four match on Friday.
Must-see basketball is an understatement.
People keep saying women’s sports are the future.
Women’s sports are the present. There’s no better time to invest, get involved, become a fan, support than right here, right now.
I spoke to a handful of WNBA players about Diana Taurasi — her trash talk, her charisma, her confidence.
From former teammates and opponents to young players and vets, get to know the real DT through their experiences.
My latest for

Can't stop laughing at

Kinda think it's funny people are questioning Aliyah Boston's legitimacy as an All-Star starter when she has the 3rd best Player Efficiency Rating (29.3) & the highest FG percentage (65%) in the entire league (on 9+ attempts per game).
Don't let the rookie tag blind you.
WNBA coverage needs to extend to off the court. Players not overseas are doing big things in the offseason, including business ventures, music, fashion, women's sports media investments, commentating at the college level, coaching, etc. There are stories waiting to be told.
Asked Jewell Loyd about SportsCenter spelling her name wrong. Loved her response:
"I’m not a high school kid. I’m not a college kid. I’m a professional athlete. They’re not gonna spell LeBron’s name wrong, and shouldn’t spell mine. Hopefully they don’t make that mistake again."
