1. **Fires up PERSONAL NEWS twitter**
This week, I am launching Power Plays, a no-bullshit newsletter for fans who are sick of sexism, and ready to see equality for women in sports.
Stop glamorizing “the grind” and start glamorizing getting 7+ hours of sleep at night, having healthy relationships, feeling safe at work, taking sick days, being paid a living wage, working hard when you’re at work, boundaries, and self-caring your way to success.
You can be sad John McCain died, respectful to his family, thankful for his service to the country, and also acknowledge some incredibly troubling parts of his legacy. These things are not all mutually exclusive.
Dawn Staley says trans women should be allowed to play women’s sports. Says she knows she’s going to get heat now before the biggest game, and she’s okay with that.
(I believe it was Outkick that asked the question.)
What an incredible statement of inclusivity from Dawn. Wow.
I feel for HVL. She speaks out against racism and sticks up for her teammates and then her coach puts her through that on national television while she’s sick.
I have been very upfront about how I felt about Kobe and his legacy, but this is devastating news and I’m honestly just sitting here stunned. Give yourself and others room to feel complicated feelings of grief. Thinking of his wife and daughters, and also of survivors.
To be clear, Caitlin should 100% have a shoe. It would be malpractice not to give her a shoe at this point.
But it further highlights that it’s *been* malpractice not to give A’ja a shoe long before this.
I’m not saying not to give Caitlin a shoe. I’m saying give A’ja lots.
One thing I’ve tried to stop doing both in my writing and on twitter and in private is praising people who say they work 24/7 and never sleep. It’s not a personality trait or a skill or proof of anything other than bad time management.
Four years ago, Adam Rippon and MIrai Nagasu were eating in-n-out burger in California, crying and watching the Sochi Olympics from their couch. Look at them now.
Like, we were set up for the PERFECT ENDING. UConn was going to win it or lose it, but it was in the players hands on the last possession. You can't call a foul there unless it's a Draymond Green chokehold. You just can't.
Seeing players like Marta and Christine Sinclair and teams like Brazil, Canada, Italy, etc. go out in the group stages really puts Team USA's celebration post-Portugal game in perspective: Advancing isn't a given for anyone; it is earned and it is an achievement.
Here's the video and transcript:
"If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports or vice versa, you should be able to play."
"Now the barnstormer people are going to flood my timeline and be a distraction to me ... and I'm okay with that. I really am."
Caitlin Clark is expected to receive a signature shoe from Nike, per
@ShamsCharania
Here would be the list of active WNBA players with a current signature shoe:
- Caitlin Clark
- Sabrina Ionescu
- Breanna Stewart
The reaction to the rumors/reports about Dwight Howard show you everything you need to know about why male pro athletes stay in the closet. So much homophobia and transphobia, it is absolutely sickening.
right now i'm thinking about how these players have to rely on their federation to properly pay them for their world cup win, and how brave it is for them to boycott before getting would could be life-changing money. and how fucked up it is that FIFA didn't pay players directly.
I woke up thinking about Infantino's insulting speech, an abusive coach taking a victory lap, and Spain's FA pres sexually assaulting Hermoso by kissing her on the lips. It was a PHENOMENAL World Cup for women's soccer. But powerful men were adamant to show how far we have to go.
I sometimes worry about the diabolical amount of pressure being put on her shoulders, but things like this make me feel like she’s going to be just fine. Cool to see her personality shine.
I agree, but it’s also super important to note that the women’s Final Four was a sellout from 1993-2008. The 1996 Final Four in Charlotte sold out in 11 days. In 2002, 26,619 people sold out the Alamodome in both the semis and final. The Final Four has always been well attended.
No matter what you think of Taurasi, she’s the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer and dismissing her trash talk —which is her love language!!— as that of a “disgruntled (implied: ungrateful) veteran” is really wild. Players are competitors, not fangirls, and that’s a great thing!
This is the first direct measurement of the Caitlin Clark Effect on the WNBA. If there are any disgruntled veteran players still out there, it’s probably time for them to come along for the ride.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it is OKAY to unapologetically celebrate this win. There are caveats. There is much more work to do. There are no guarantees. But this is a huge deal and it matters and will save lives and take a day or two to exhale and soak it in.
I’ve never related to an Olympian as much as I do to Suni Lee, who announced she might stay away from social media until beam finals so she wouldn’t be distracted, and then very clearly went straight to twitter and Instagram.
The Team USA women trained for most of their national team careers only making $6,000 every 4 years. Last year, they risked it all to boycott the world championships and fight for a better present and brighter future for the sport. Now, they're Olympic champions.

I just feel like we’re one game away from Carli saying what she wants to say, which is something like, “this team chose wokeness over winning,” and securing her lucrative future on the right-wing speaker circuit.
So, this is the very first Carolina Panthers team photo, back in 1995, their inaugural season. Look who is right behind Jerry Richardson, front and center.
Two things can be true:
1. Serena did not lose because of Carlos. She lost because Osaka played lights out better than she did. And stayed composed.
2. The game penalty was absurd, and this is a devastating end to the tournament.
It’s HARD, though. For me, too! I’m trying to count successful days as days when I achieve a balance, not days where I write for 15 hours straight.
Of course there will always be times (in sports media, this is often playoffs) when hours extend. But it shouldn’t be the norm.
Great to see Paige Bueckers shining on the big stage. She was going to be Caitlin Clark before Caitlin Clark, but got derailed by injuries.
32 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists vs. Cuse to move to Sweet 16.
PSA: basketball is not over until the fall, the wnba exists!
it's fine if your sad that the nba is over until the fall, but just don't accidentally do a sexism while you're lamenting it.
The last five Olympic all-around champions have all been from the USA -- Carly Patterson, Nasta Liukin, Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, and now, Sunisa Lee.
The last 3 are all WOC, w/ Lee being the first Hmong-American ever in the Olympics.
Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.
Can we, as a national media, stop interviewing Carli Lloyd?????? She says the exact same thing in every interview and has for the last 5 years. For someone who claims she doesn’t need to be liked she certainly is searching far and wide for validation.
can we get a 30-for-30 just on alyssa naehr taking that penalty kick, i keep thinking about it, i don't want to talk about what happened before or afterwards just everything about that decision and that execution
When WNBA players endorsed
@ReverendWarnock
on August 4, 2020, he was polling at just 9%, behind D. Matt Lieberman (14%), R. Doug Collins (20%), and Loeffler (26%).
so many people are tweeting out a photo of the Storm in "Vote Warnock" t-shirts and captioning it, "thank the Atlanta Dream," and CONSIDER THIS ME YELLING AT THEM TO FUCKING PAY ATTENTION TO THE WNBA AND NOT JUST TWEET ABOUT THEM FOR CLOUT
This game alone should be the end of amateurism. So many — Duke, ticket scammers, sponsors, and businesses all throughout Durham — are making so much more money than usual b/c of Zion. He makes nothing, and gets hurt in the game, months before he can cash in. It’s disgraceful.
I agree with this sentiment 100%. And the spotlight on the Spanish team from winning has helped. But I fear they weren’t heard because they won; they were heard because it was done on live TV, and because of Rubiales’s speech. Even successful women need hard proof to be believed.
the fact that men first swam the 1500m free in the olympics in 1904, and yet women were just permitted to swim the event in the olympics *today* is just another example of the absurd barriers mediocre men have historically placed on women to artificially enforce their superiority
As we sit here at 10pm on a Saturday to watch what was meant to be the USWNT R16 game, I take solace in the fact that as much as we all hate Vlatko right now, nobody hates him more than Fox Sports executives.
92,003!!!!!!!!!! THEY DID IT!!!! NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL SET THE WORLD RECORD FOR ATTENDANCE AT A WOMEN'S SPORTING EVENT.
THE WORLD RECORD.
92,003!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this:
@De11eDonne
’s friend made her a makeshift orange carpet since she missed All-Star, and also gave her a trophy for being picked last in the draft 😂 Great impressions of Cathy and Holly, too.
This is going to piss off both wnba haters and wnba twitter and I would just like to remind everyone that fiancés are allowed to be biased it’s okay!!!!!!!
I don't see how Jill Ellis can remain involved with the league or women's soccer in general in any way, shape, or form after this. San Diego needs to act.
Their soccer team is essentially a USWNT farm team. Stanford athletics are so important to women's sports and the fact that they're such an afterthought is so fucking infuriating.
Stanford has been in the top 10 in the last year in women’s basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming, cross country, and water polo, and men’s soccer, baseball, gymnastics, volleyball, rowing, water polo and I’m sure I’m missing some
What an incredible moment to have the top coach of the top team on the biggest stage face the question head on and stand up for trans women. Dawn Staley is remarkable.
Me: I’m a sports reporter
Guy I’m talking to: Oh, do you like sports?
This is the

response I get from men I’ve just met when I tell them what I do. It happens All. The. Time. I’m assuming male sports reporters don’t get asked this question?
Giannis is on IG Live being driven to get 50 chicken nuggets by his very pregnant GF, with one trophy on his lap and the other on the floor between his legs, singing “I woke up like this, I woke up like this” and talking about how he stole the championship trophy from the team 😂
Remember: Lindsay Whalen was one of the first white athletes to get involved in the BLM movement. In 2016 she joined the 3 other Lynx captains -- Moore, Augustus, and Brunson -- to hold a pre-game press conference about police brutality. This was months before anyone took a knee.
Check on your strong friends, check on your friends who are falling apart, check on your silent friends, check on your loud friends, check on your successful friends, check on your struggling friends, just check on everyone because you never know.
I honestly cannot get over this story. She was sent a $857 check from USA Bball after she led them to a gold medal. She cashed it. They told her it was a mistake. SHE RETURNED THE $857. And yet, Alabama HS Sports Assoc is acting like they're doing the NOBLE THING banning her.
i'm sorry i know with everything going on in the world i shouldn't be caring about nick cannon's procreation schedule, but 3 babies in 3 months with 3 different women -- two born just two weeks apart -- is truly just BANANAS.
College universities and athletic conferences need to put politics aside and come together to find a way to safely play college football this season.
The players want to play. Shouldn’t their voices be heard too?

My latest, on Wisconsin’s Marsha Howard, who is still protesting racism during the national anthem and has no plans to stop. We spoke about Grassley’s attack, the support of her team, and the responsibility she feels to black students at UW, just 2% of pop
