Here's the list of the writers whose work is featured in The Year's Best Sports Writing 2023.
There are also 180+ writers listed in the Honorable Mention section.
Incredible work by all.
To preorder:
I think ESPN should broadcast the CFP national championship for the love of the game. Go commercial free. Accept no ad dollars. No promoting Disney products. No executive takes a paycheck that week. On-air talent does it gratis.
Do this for the love of the game.
Congratulations! NABJ names Jemele Hill as its “Journalist Of The Year”; the award recognizes The Undefeated's columnist for her "distinguished body of work"
I covered 17 U.S.Opens for Sports Illustrated. This is just my opinion: There is no way a men’s player with Serena resume (multiple GS titles, economic driver of the sport) is getting a third code violation for that language in the finals of a major. No way.
ESPN Films and Netflix are partnering for a multi-part 10-hour documentary about Michael Jordan. Coming out in 2019. Jordan has signed off on his participation.
Soccer fans:
NBC says Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Manchester United on Sunday is the most-watched Premier League match in U.S. history with 1.92 million viewers across NBC, Peacock and NBC Sports Digital platforms.
Telemundo had 382,000 viewers.
Via sources: TNT will no longer air the Players Only NBA broadcast. Turner Sports will likely do some Players Only content but as far as games for the 2019-20 season, the Players Only broadcast on TNT is no more.
Tonight is a night you really want thoughtful people on air. You want people who don't speculate. You want people with basic humanity. Lisa Salters, Booger McFarland, Ryan Clark, Joe Buck, Scott Van Pelt and pretty much everyone on ESPN so far has really done this tonight.
ESPN is going to have a new Monday Night Football booth. Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland will not return, via sources. The successors will be internal. No decision has been made yet. Both Tessitore and McFarland will remain in prominent roles at ESPN.
No bullshit reality: McAfee/his show can book pretty much anyone in sports right now. He could easily go high-profile NFL/CFB guest daily.
So him putting on a newspaper columnist who covers Caitlin Clark is excellent.
And this was leading into a game on Peacock and not ESPN.
"Caitlin Clark has so much spotlight on her all the time..
She's averaging 32 plus points a game this season and she needs 8 points to break the record" ~

Preakness viewership:
2020: 2.4 million viewers
2019: 5.41 million
2018: 7.90 million
2017: 7.54 million
What is absolutely clear here is that the public has decided that these 3-year-olds have politicized horse racing to the point where viewers will no longer watch.
I thought Diana Taurasi gave a really interesting answer today about broadcasters making comparisons when it comes to women's college basketball and WNBA players. Something to think about.
Some (very good) sports media news:
CBS will be changing the NCAA Selection Show from last year's broadcast on TBS. No rolling out all the teams in alphabetical order this year. They will return to unveiling the teams in brackets when you first see them on the screen.
Greg Olsen deserves all the praise he gets. He took advantage of a huge opportunity (Aikman to ESPN) and has become a terrific listen. Highest compliment a sports TV analyst can get? Do you learn something from his or her broadcast. He delivers that.
Just in: CNN's town hall with Donald Trump averaged 3.1 million total viewers. The event outrated Fox and MSNBC, as expected, but these are not 2015/16 level numbers for Trump — not even close.
What LeBron James does every night, at 33 years old, for as many years as he has done it, with the expectation of greatness every night, might be the greatest thing I’ve seen in sports.
Game 7 of the Nuggets-Jazz drew 3.385 million viewers on ABC. One of the most-watched games since the restart and very big for the NBA — a non-LeBron James game drawing robust numbers. Tops among all demos (Adults watching 18-34, 18-49 and 24-54.)
I’ve said this for many years and I’ll say it again today:
Clark Kellogg is always prepared, thoughtful and delivers insight during the NCAA Tournament. He also does a great job letting the Turner guys do their thing.
An underrated studio analyst with years of excellence.
To put this in perspective. This game tops...
• Every World Series game last year.
• Every NBA Finals game last year.
• Every Daytona 500 since 2013.
• Every Masters final round viewership since 2013.
• All but five CFB games in 2023.

STORY:
No national media entity has been more connected to Special Olympics than ESPN. Cover this one, ESPN. Don’t worry about any assholes calling you out on a bullshit narrative for covering a political story. It’s a human story your company is massively invested in.

The fact that Mike Golic is trending and has engendered such positive reception from people as he concludes his long run on ESPN Radio is literally the reason why the decision to remove Golic from a permanent spot on ESPN Radio is so short-sighted.
I've written this many times.
I'll write it here again:
That ESPN management did not find a regular place on ESPN Radio for Mike Golic — the most known commodity in the history of ESPN Radio and someone its audience is clearly fond of — is a massive failure of management.

on the Antonio Brown situation
This man, via enablers from ESPN and Fox Sports management, has been doing this to LeBron James for more than a decade. Anyone associated with putting this oleaginous monorail salesman on the air should be ashamed.
This is funny: LeBron is now lying on the floor during the championship presentation, sending the message to Blind Witnesses he carried a heavy load the whole game and throughout the playoffs.
NEWS: ESPN has signed

She will continue to work on major ESPN events including college football, Women's Final Four, WNBA, Women's College World Series.
Congrats to Undisputed for averaging an 0.1 rating in Chicago, Denver and St. Louis. But just ONCE I’d love to see this show collect on its millions in marketing and in-house ads on Big Fox by beating Paw Patrol and reruns of classic game shows on GSN. That would be greatness.
Congrats to LeBron for making that shot. But just ONCE I'd love to see him do what he does better than anyone ever, freight-train to the basket ... and have the guts to shoot the free throws if need be. THAT would be greatness.
So many years of "no one cares", "no one is watching", "kitchen", "a high school can team can beat them" and on and on.
Iowa-LSU is going to draw millions of viewers on Monday night.
For an Elite Eight game.
On cable.
Welcome to the motherfucking new world.
Booger McFarland was absolutely tremendous tonight in the fourth quarter. It's also good for ESPN and the NFL in the longterm. You want the people airing your product to be honest. MNF viewers had to suffer for years with analysts who saw everything via NFL-colored glasses.
Pat McAfee announced today on his show that Aaron Rodgers is done as a guest for the NFL season.
From everything I understand: McAfee made that call (as I have written he has creative control & control of guest booking).
Obviously, I AM CERTAIN ESPN supports this.
Just got distracted by the fact that I knew this dude would clownfuck LeBron off this so I think it's WORTH NOTING THAT BUBBLE GUPPIES, PAW PATROL AND PUPPY DOG PALS BEATS THIS MANS SHOW BY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VIEWERS DAILY.
Just got distracted for a second by a phone call. LEBRON GOT THROWN OUT FOR THE 1ST TIME IN HIS CAREER FOR USING FOUL LANGUAGE COMPLAINING ABOUT A CALL??? IN THE 4TH Q OF A BLOWOUT WIN??? WHY WOULD HE EVEN CARE AT THAT POINT??? STAT-PADDING???
Per sources: Gus Johnson and Aqib Talib are going to team up this year for some NFL games on Fox. It won't be a full season of games but weeks Fox has an extra game. That's going to be a fun listen IMO.
Again: What LeBron James does every night, at 33 years old, for as many years as he has done it, with the expectation of greatness every night, might be the greatest thing I’ve seen in sports.

game drew 23.9 million viewers on Sunday on Fox. That's the second most-watched NFL game this season — behind only Bucs-Saints (25.9 million) in Week One.
ESPN/ABC is averaging 5,226 million viewers across 27 games for 2023 NBA postseason. That's the most watched NBA playoffs ever on ESPN platforms through first two rounds.
Game 7 Celtics-Sixers: 8.441 million viewers.
Most watched conference semifinals game on ABC in 12 years
On Dec 15, on a national stage, Paw Patrol reinforced why they are the MVPs of morning TV. They insisted on taking the Bayless-led Undisputed head on with a “Pups Save A Snowboard Competition” episode & beat Bayless 1.018 million to 137,000 viewers. Congrats, Chase and Rubble.
Yesterday on the national Christmas stage, Kevin Durant reinforced what he proved as Finals MVP. He insisted on taking LeBron in the 4th quarter, forced him into 4 turnovers, forced an airball from 3 and again proved he's now The Best Player on the Planet. Congrats, KD.
No matter what happens with Kawhi, I hope Raptors fans really appreciate what Danny Green is doing. He could have easily signed on the opening night of FA - and for really nice money — but has opted to wait so far to KL because he wants to run it back.
NBCSN said its Penguins-Flyers opener averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 972,000 viewers, the network’s most-watched regular-season NHL game on record.

The national (final) number comes out Tuesday including viewership info prior to the out-of-home viewership.
One conclusion: The NFL isn't dead.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 vanished into the Indian Ocean five years ago, and we still don’t know why. The explanation lies not in the sea but on land—in Malaysia, where officials know more than they dare to say. William Langewiesche reports:
Broadcasting is always subjective:
To me: Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit are calling an excellent game. Why do I say that?
1. Exceptionally prepared for a league they normally don't call.
2. Easy chemistry. Notice they don't step on each other.
3. Energy and enthusiasm.
Regarding last night's Field of Dreams game:
Based on overnight ratings per sources — final numbers out later — FOX is looking at its best metered market rating (the rating for the largest media markets/cities in the U.S.) for an MLB regular season game since 2005.
The Skip Bayless-led Undisputed drew 109,000 viewers on Tuesday.
Nine hours later on the Lifetime Network, Rizzoli & Isles, whose last new show aired on September 5, 2016, drew 380,000 viewers.

This will seem foreign to 20-somethings but once upon a time one of the greatest things ever was buying USA TODAY on the Monday after the brackets came out to get all capsules of the teams.
One of the great newspaper editions ever.
CNN has Kellyanne Conway yet again. This is of course pro wrestling. You have Conway on to create conflict TV and get a viral clip. IMO: CNN plays itself every time with viewers such as myself who want to believe the network is different. It’s not.
