Quello stesso giorno erano andati in città e Franz, uscendo di casa, si era accorto che la madre aveva ai piedi scarpe diverse. Rimase confuso, voleva farglielo notare, ma allo stesso tempo temeva in quel modo di ferirla.

Franz aveva dodici anni quando il padre abbandonò la madre all’improvviso. Il ragazzo intuì che era accaduto qualcosa di grave, ma la madre velò il dramma dietro parole misurate e neutre, per non turbarlo.
