Today in @Nature we report a systematic strategy to activate & identify gene sets in plants. We identify 8 new genes from the yew tree's Taxol biosynthetic pathway, enabling us to engineer tobacco with 17- & 20-gene pathways to Taxol precursors baccatin III and dBz-deoxy-Taxol. a.

We structurally characterized many side-products of T5aH, and found that lowering expression is beneficial for T5aH’s desired activity. This allows us to reconstitute the early six-step of Taxol biosynthetic network for the first time. (2/2).

While Conor (postdoc working with me on this project) had this gene cloned over 2 years ago, it might take us another full year to screen and find this enzymes, due to the huge amount of candidates genes we have in the freezer.🥲(3/3).
