A thread ๐งต for @RachelReeves and @Keir_Starmer We are a family farm in Mid Suffolk, growing combinable crops and producing free range eggs. Back during the last Labour government we were struggling to make decent margins, so we explored alternative income streams and diversify

It was a 17 year mirage fueled by QE and zero rates. Instead of taking our medicine and throwing the bad acting bankers in jail we went this route. Now everyone thinks theyโre a genius just sitting 100% long in the market with all of their wealth. Itโs all a giant con
Hear me out, was the entire period since the Great Financial Crisis just an unsustainable artificial debt binge?

In my view this and its story is very "English" .
Norman and Saxon by Rudyard Kipling "My son," said the Norman Baron, "I am dying, and you will be heir To all the broad acres in England that William gave me for share When he conquered the Saxon at Hastings, and a nice little handful it is. But before you go over to rule it I

@Dirty_Pitchfork @ChrisGPackham @agricontract Who loses? Every farmer who doesn't supply a supermarket! Shoppers understandably flock to the big 6 and as we just cannot compete with a loss leading price. It should be illegal for them to sell anything for less than they have paid for it as it just skews the market.

It even more sinister than thisโฆ theyโre often giving away the farmers produce at his/her expense AND then using the loss leader to sell their own ultra-processed foods
Farmers under valued in life overvalued in death Why do supermarkets drive down the real cost of food They are not doing it to be nice to you they are doing it to get you in shop to make it back out of you on other products But in doing so kill farm shops @AldiUK

@ShepherdWales @CSPolicies The underlying issue is the same. If you want generational businesses to grow, then imposing a 20% tax on them at a random point once every generation is a terrible idea. Best case scenario, they have to build up sufficient excess funds to meet that liability so they donโt

โsorry sir, your family canโt have grass-fed beef this month. your carbon wallet says no. please eat this insect powder insteadโ your carbon footprint will be tracked and checked before you can spend your money. this is not about the climate. this is about control.

Today I pointed out that the #familyfarmtax will just increase supply of land to the types of investors it is supposed to deter.

@halfbob IHT never taxed business wealth. It taxed personal wealth. Thatโs changing in April.

@ShepherdWales My blood boils every time he and Rachel repeat this lie. Iโm a small farm and will be affected. Every single family farm will be affected. The 75% that claimed this relief in 21/22 that he refers to could in no way be described as โfarmsโ.

When Starmer goes on about 75% of family farms not being affected he isnโt talking about commercial family farms in that 75%, they are predominantly in the 25%. He is lumping everyone who owns some land into one lump and being disingenuous. All โholdingsโ worth over the IHT
Alistair Carmichael lists all the majority-Labour select committees against the family farms tax: "Why do you not listen to your own party colleagues?" Starmer: "I do listen to party colleagues all the time." Carmichael: "And then do what you're going to do anyway."

Britain is now governed by a Prime Minister who admits his tax policy is driving farmers to contemplate suicide โ and presses on anyway. That's not inference. It's his own admission. Keir Starmer told MPs he is aware that farmers are considering ending their lives in response to
