#FamilyFarmTax talking points - a helpful guide:. 1. "It's only 500 farms". No, that's APR claims above £1m made in one year, 2021/22. Many more people than that are affected by the rules. The CLA estimated the total number is 70,000 farms. On the Government's own numbers.

Really pleased to have a long meeting with @VictoriaAtkins today on the changes to APR & BPR. She was bang on top of her brief and really understood the impact and implications for farmers and businesses owners. It seems clear there will be no clarity in July, with draft.

This is a really peculiar understanding of a system deliberately set up to incentive saving for retirement, and thereby alleviate the burden on the state in later life. Relief is already capped (lifetime allowance and annual contributions for high earners). I’d be fascinated to.
The UK spends as much on tax breaks for the wealthy’s pensions as it does on benefits for people with disabilities. One is handed out automatically. The other is fought for, often for years. If you want to see how rigged our system is, read on. 🧵.

I’ve been accepting that the APR/BPR changes were foisted on DEFRA at the last minute via James Murray’s terrible idea at the Treasury. There is language you use when that happens, and I am getting hints from Daniel Zeichner’s words that he’s not totally happy spending his.
Labour’s Farming Minister - “I stand with the Chancellor”. Why doesn’t he stand with farmers? Because he’s more interested in keeping his job than yours. @Conservatives will axe the Family Farm and Family Firm Taxes.

I am surprised at the approach being taken by the Attorney General to reassure people that any suggestion of a two-tier justice system is ill-founded. I expected an explanation of sentencing guidelines, and confirmation that were there to be any hint of bias then he and the.
EXCLUSIVE: . Claims UK has two-tier justice system are disgusting, says Attorney General Richard Hermer. Lord Hermer was speaking in a wide-ranging interview about his 30-year friendship with the PM for Starmer's Stormy Year .

In December 2024, Arun Advani of Centax promised the EFRA Committee in Parliament to use his access to HMRC tax data to model the affordability of the #FamilyFarmTax. When asked when the results would be published Dr Advani said "It will be in spring. By spring I mean what.

The introduction of changes to APR/BPR clearly breached the Tax Consultation Framework of 2011. From the last Budget, many people have been asking the Govt to pause, consult and amend the proposal. If they had acted properly we would not be here today.
Time and time again, this Labour government has brought in destructive policies without proper consultation. That includes the changes to APR and BPR which have brought in a Family Farm Tax and Family Firm Tax. Rather than punishing farmers in an attempt to balance their.

This will put many MPs in a really difficult position. If they vote against the Bill they’re saying that Keir and Rachel aren’t doing a good job and that it’s time for some new and better ideas. Such a decision!.
🚨 NEW: Government whips are calling these Labour MPs to tell them that the welfare reform Bill is being treated as a confidence vote in Keir Starmer . [@kateferguson4].

Another way of looking at the proposed APR/BPR changes - imagine the Government creating a law where 1 in 30 of all UK businesses are required to pay HMRC 20% of their total value. Every business is put in that lottery every year, even if they paid it last year. If that sounds.
🗣️ "To most people, £1m is more money than they will ever hope to inherit, so why should farmers get any more?. But anyone in agriculture knows £1m is not a huge sum, and even farms of modest size may exceed that value easily.". READ MORE:

This is sufficiently astonishing that my first response would be to check the definitions and data to make sure there isn't an error. If it stands, then the obvious thing would be an HMRC taskforce to correct this trend, which swiftly would self-fund itself.
If you missed it, here's our report from yesterday on the latest HMRC data, with the astonishing 40% stat:

Astonishing claim from the Secretary of State for the Environment. A cut in the budget for farming of around 20% over three years in an era of challenging returns and the #FamilyFarmTax. I'm not sure who is delighted.
Today, Steve Reed claimed that “everyone is delighted” at Labour’s decision to slash the farming budget by more than £100 million a year 👇. To our farmers - Are you delighted?

Looking at the figures and taking reasonable estimates, it looks like DEFRA's budget for farming is being cut by about 20% in real terms over the next 3 years. I guess food security isn't high on the pecking order.
Defra’s farming budget figures are finally out - story to come - but see how the farming budget is being cut each year. Reforms to the sustainable farming incentive will be announced soon, apparently
