Because the only one who gets to choose are the #PrivateSchools They can say NO to whoever they wish - special needs, non-English speakers, gay, lesbian, transgender … the list goes on and on. #PublicMoneyForPublicSchools
#SchoolVouchers mostly fund children already in private school. They create massive new budget obligations. Lawmakers then are forced to raid state school aid for $$ later. This is what happens in every state and it’ll happen in #Iowa #IAed #IAleg too. 😞

There's an interesting proposed change in HSB 31, the rules that govern the Iowa House. Rule 32 says any bills that go through the Education Reform Committee are exempt from Appropriations and Ways and Means, where their financial impact would be assessed. https://t.co/JHstqFx3Q5

@ppeter_phyllis It didn’t pass last session, and this bill is much, much more extreme. There are a lot of R legislators in the House on the fence, it is worth sending all of them an email/making a call/coming to visit.

Just think what Iowa’s Public Schools would be able to do with an additional $900 million over the next four years, but instead this proposal creates a dual funding mechanism that will only lead to fewer and fewer dollars for Iowa’s public schools for eternity.

Amen! This is a one year solution, not an on going revenue source! Another sound bite, but little strategic planning. I don’t think the Governor nor the majority of Legislators understand school finance and have little interest in listening to those who do.
Don’t buy into the false rhetoric that the Governor is allocating 100 million for teacher salaries. There is zero dollars in the state budget for that. The proposal is to allow schools to use their categorical balances. Sounds good but you can’t sustain salaries this way.
