I remember standing in the IA Capitol explaining what an ectopic pregnancy was to my then State Sen. (he didn’t know how proposed abortion restrictions would impact, because he didn’t know what it was)…and I thought, “why is he the one making these decisions?”
#runforoffice
Iowa Gov doesn’t get it. When people are struggling financially they buy more cheap high calorie low nutrition food. For years we have asked for a small state investment in double up food bucks to help SNAP users afford fresh fruits and vegetables, but we’ve gotten ignored…
Hey remember that budget surplus our Governor is bragging about?
At my kid’s school the art teacher has a 75 cent per student budget for supplies for the entire year. Another teacher was asking about fund raising to be able to print.
I’m hearing from lots of parents reporting that their children are being bullied for wearing a mask. Are you going to stand up for their personal choice
@IAGovernor
?
Hi 👋 I'm Iowa Sen Sarah Trone Garriott.
I got involved w/
@MomsDemand
to keep kids safe. In '20 I defeated an A-rated NRA Republican & flipped a seat.
Now I'm up against the GOP Sen President, who's also backed by the NRA. Can you RT & follow to help us defeat extremism again?
Gov Reynolds herself said: You shouldn't have to wake up every morning and worry about the next thing the government is going to do to you, your business, or your children.
No we shouldn't, but that seems to be the theme of this yr's legis session at the Gov's direction.
You know…I filed education bills today, too.
1. Funding to decrease class sizes
2. Addressing preschool funding gaps
3. Requiring a student non-voting member on school boards so that student voices are heard in the decisions that impact them
Don’t believe anyone who tells you there is nothing we can do but pray. Take action—first step is to find community because we need to work together:
@IowaMFOL
@MomsDemand
In 2 months we will finally pay off our last student loan, after 20 years of paying. If the federal government then forgives student loans for everyone else I would be so incredibly happy for all of them.
I deleted a tweet that I agree was heavier on the venting than the productive response. Here’s the productive version: Its time to make sure persons who disregarded public health and gave no notice to schools and families are voted out of office.
The last time the Iowa Legislature passed a 6 week ban I was there…and I realized that I couldn’t let my state senator pass laws about my body and my life. So I ran and knocked out 2 State Senate Presidents.
Let’s make it clear to all that this is just the beginning.
If Republican Senate President Jake Chapman is reelected, he will completely ban abortion in Iowa. Iowans will lose their right to privacy and self-determination. That’s what’s at stake in this election.
“four states had statistically significant increases — Georgia (13%), Iowa (30%), Missouri (16%) and Texas (8%).”
30% Iowa?!
This is a policy choice—and we can choose better: 🧵
The U.S. infant mortality rate saw its largest increase in two decades — and Iowa is among 4 states where the rate soared. “These tragedies are unacceptable,”
@ChuckGrassley
told reporters. “More needs to be done to improve outcomes for moms and babies.”
Iowa Gov doesn’t get it. Summer feeding sites aren’t accessible to all families in need (as rural IA family who qualifies for free school lunch points out they’d have to travel 32 miles each way). The summer EBT program directly helps all qualifying families buy groceries.
There it is, the Governor’s voucher plan’s goal: to give taxpayer dollars away to the wealthiest who were already sending their kids to exclusive private schools.
“When do you stand up for Iowans?”
Sen Bisignano speaking against a bill that would give pesticide manufacturers freedom from liability—which would be the only law of its kind in the country.
The Reynolds administration dragged their feet till Friday afternoon before Christmas to announce they won’t make use of money that is just there to feed kids:
Our schools are not failing
@IAGovernor
, they are trying to keep going in a state with an out of control pandemic after a decade of inadequate funding.
The Senate Republicans are using a procedural trick so that Democrats or even members of their own party cannot offer amendments and debate will be limited. We should not play games with hundreds of millions of Iowa taxpayer dollars.
Once again, awful framing from the Register. More accurately: R lawmakers want to give unqualified, untrained persons a title, the endorsement of the district, and access to your children during school hours—with no oversight or defined expectations!
Reforming Iowa’s cannabis laws was not one of my top issues. But when I’m out knocking doors, people in the district keep bringing it up.
Iowans want to have this conversation—legislators need to listen.
I spent tonight with language arts educators. One of the high schools in my district has 22 teachers out sick for tomorrow. If anyone else calls in they won’t be able to cover classes. The teachers are exhausted.
These are the problems the IA legislature needs to address.
.
@janet4iowa
asked if school nurses, counselors, psychologists, social workers could be disciplined for not outing trans students—Sen Rozenboom answered yes. Sen Petersen noted for social workers this is violation of their national code of professional ethics.
My children cannot be vaccinated. In the face of the new and more dangerous Delta variant
@IAGovernor
is prohibiting schools from using tools that worked last year to prevent spread. I’m at the Capitol with other parents calling on that Iowan to do the right thing for kids.
Area Education Agencies were at Perry HS with rapid crisis response and. Will be there for months to come with mental health services, educator support—under the Governor’s proposal this all goes away.
Just as Iowa classrooms have transformed over the past 50 years, so have our programs and services. The proposed bill aims to bring significant shifts to the education landscape; it's crucial to keep an eye on how it will impact our programs and services.
On a meeting with
@IDPH
: when is the state going to start publicly reporting COVID numbers daily so that Iowans have the information they need to make informed decisions?
IDPH:
@IAGovernor
needs to give permission. We have made that request.
School Funding just passed the House at 2.4%... no fix for pandemic enrollment drop. When property taxes rise in your district, remember who was sitting in the 1 billion dollar surplus/rainy day and voted to shortchange schools anyways.
Unless the Governor is going to propose an additional $29 million in state aid, we’ll never come close to meeting the impact of the summer EBT program she rejected.
Senate Republicans are proposing a 2% increase in public school funding…far behind rising costs and tens of millions of dollars less than new funding going to private schools this year.
today IA House Republicans dropped a 49 page amendment, limited debate to 6:30 so they could get to watch basketball, and completely shut out Iowans who have been overwhelmingly opposed to gutting the AEAs.
Here are some of the folks running against them this November:
The COVID flood gates have opened. I’m hearing from too many tonight that their kid has tested positive, or they are waiting on results. We needed a mask mandate last week. Don’t delay school boards.
On a call with
@IAPublicHealth
right now. If the Governor chose to, she could allow schools to determine their own mask policy based on local circumstances via public health emergency order, it would override the irresponsible mask preemption law.
Senate Republicans are proposing 2.25% increase for public schools. I spoke with board and admin from two districts today--in face of rising transportation and utilities costs, this could mean no cost of living raises for staff, cutting programs. We can do better for Iowa kids.
The
@IAGovernor
’s office is telling folks to call their legislators with their concerns about school mask preemption. She could give back local authority with a public health emergency order, but she’s dodging her responsibility to do the right thing.
We launched our first digital ad!
I'm a pro-public school mom, ELCA minister, & Iowa State Senator. Redistricting put me up against the GOP Senate Pres who called teachers “sinister” & proposed bills to throw them in jail.
Can you follow & RT to help me get to 10k followers?
Here we go! Today I officially filed to run for re-election in Senate District 14. Help me hold on to this hard-won seat, so I can keep showing up for the people of Iowa!
Here's another harmful education bill moving through subcommittee this week on Tuesday, January 31st at 9:30am.
SF 85: an attempt to remove social emotional learning from the public schools.
This is the definition provided on the Iowa Department of Education Website:
So proud of these young folks who came to the Iowa Capitol to stand up for their classmates and make sure Iowa schools are welcoming places for all kids and all families!
Hi 👋 I'm State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott
I'm a pro-public school mom, ELCA minister, & only D to flip a Sen. seat in '20
Redistricting paired me against the GOP Sen. Pres who proposed bills to jail 'sinister' teachers.
Help keep my seat & win in Nov 👇
It’s really too bad that this public hearing is happening in the middle of the afternoon when most parents are at work, students and teachers are in school.
.
@ZachWahls
speaking against R leadership decision to exclude the press from Senate floor. The Senator also spoke against the demonization of educators—it’s putting them at risk for threats and violence.
It’s officially official: Gov. Kim Reynolds will sign an abortion restriction once cardiac activity is detected into law at the Family Leadership Summit on Friday. The conservative evangelical event will also feature several GOP presidential candidates.
Blank check budgets.
Monday and Tuesday Senate Republicans introduced and passed budgets with NO NUMBERS in them. No information on what their plans are. No opportunity for the public to respond—shutting Iowans out of the process again.
🚨 UPDATE:
@IAGovernor
has signed this bill into law. Schools may not require masks today, May 20, 2021 and cities, counties may not require masks be worn in businesses.

Pregnancy is calculated from the last day of the previous period, 6 wks pregnant is 2 wks past the first missed period. Most won’t even know they are pregnant yet.
Anyone who tells you the proposed changes to the governor’s AEA bill is responding to Iowans concerns is FULL OF IT.
The original bill had 99 instances of local decision-making taken away and moved to the Governor’s Dept of education. The new has 133.
Angry and looking for the next step? Warren Co., IA has a special election for County Auditor on August 29th. The citizens of the county collected signatures to force a special election after an election denier with no experience was appointed to the role…
Senator Sinclair sends the public speakers out of the room to form lines of supporters and opponents, alternating to speak, which will create the appearance of an equal balance of opinion but in fact a majority of Iowans oppose vouchers.
Currently in Iowa, the state takes Social Security survivor benefits away from foster children who have lost their parents.
Today,
@SarahforIowa
offered an amendment to end this unconscionable practice and let kids keep the money left to them by their parents.

The Governor has been calling Republican lawmakers into her office and yelling at them to get in line and pass her AEA bill. Some of them are crumbling.
Ask your R legislators whose voice matters more: constituents or the Governor?
Today
@DrakeUniversity
@drakeotd
students came to the Capitol to advocate for the AEAs. So many students do their on the job training with AEAs, many stay in iowa to work with the AEAs to provide OT services in schools for children with disabilities.
Reynolds: “You shouldn’t have to wake up every morning and worry about the next thing the government is going to do to you, your business, or your children.”
I live in Iowa, so I do worry about that every morning.
The Governor promised to use our federal relief funds to give out $1,000 bonuses to teachers. But she left our school nurses, librarians, counselors, aids, and others who are essential to our public schools. I’m hearing from folks who are upset about this. What you can do 🧵:
Iowans deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent.
Last session I filed a bill to require reporting of demographics to the public (incl. income, IEP status, previous school). It didn’t get a hearing.
The only time I have cried over legislation: after talking to a parent with a medically vulnerable child and hearing how this will devastate families like theirs. Amendment to prohibit school mask requirements—everywhere no matter what—passes in the Iowa Senate.
A few years ago I heard
@lanon_baccam
speak at a refugee services fundraiser. I immediately ran up to him and asked him to run for office. I’m so excited that he’s running to serve the people of the 3rd district!
Rep. Tom Moore, R-Griswold, one of nine Iowa House Republicans to vote against passage of
#IAGov
Kim Reynolds school choice bill, said he voted no because of strong opposition from his constituents, even though his district is conservative.
I have young constituents with disabilities who cannot start school this week because the risk is too great and this Iowa law prevents reasonable accommodations. It’s discrimination.
A senior from West Des Moines Valley spoke out against the bill. She shared how she thinks the AEA bill would hinder general education in addition to special education.
She got an ovation from the primarily pro-AEA crowd.
