Sportswriter, Cedar Rapids Gazette (1995-???), with focus on high schools. Covered women’s basketball before it was cool. Father of two, husband of one.
Our little flyover state:
Big Ten WBB tournament champions
Big 12 WBB tournament champions
MVC MBB and WBB tournament champions
Six teams (3 men’s, 3 women’s) in the NCAA.
Treasure this.
Good morning. How’s everyone feeling today?
Remember last summer when everybody was riding Lisa Bluder’s tail for not dipping into the portal?
No Aneesah Morrow. No Lauren Betts.
No matter.
Bluder’s headed to Cleveland, a net draped around her neck.
Iowa 92, Drake 86 (OT)
Iowa State 88, UNI 85
Two pieces of evidence that WBB does it right by continuing to play Big Four games, even (gasp!) at Des Moines and Cedar Falls.
It’s time, past time, for the men to get back on the train.
They've done it!
FINAL:
#3
Iowa 77,
#1
South Carolina 73.
It's Iowa (31-6) vs. LSU (33-2) for the national championship at 2:30 p.m. Sunday (ABC).
South Carolina bows out at 36-1. Gamecocks' 42-game win streak is dust.
That winning 4x200 of UNI ... all four are from Iowa, and they combined for zero Drake titles while in high school.
They are champions now.
How about that??
To recap women's basketball in Iowa this year ...
Iowa: 2nd Big Ten.
Iowa State: 2nd Big 12.
Drake: 1st MVC.
UNI: 3rd MVC.
Not shabby. Not shabby at all.
Fans are encouraged to welcome the University of Iowa women’s basketball team back to Iowa City tomorrow.
The Hawkeyes will arrive at Coralville’s Iowa River Landing at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Ten years. Toughest story I’ve ever written.
To Brez. To Ernie. To the tough, resilient, courageous young women at West High who dug so deep and did the unthinkable later that fall. It truly was a Hollywood ending.
And to Caroline. God bless you.

Usually the Carver security lets people in 60 minutes before tip. Not tonight. More like 90 minutes.
Gate person: "The women draw better than the men, so we're letting them in sooner."
I know I've said it before, but ...
Female athletes in this state are so fortunate compared to their counterparts in most other areas of the nation.
That's the legacy of Christine Grant. And E. Wayne Cooley.
May their efforts never, ever be forgotten.
Heartfelt kudos to the person that smelled gas at a relative’s house at 4 AM today and called the authorities, who discovered a gas leak.
That person was a Gazette carrier.
I gratefully acknowledge the First Lady’s sentiments, but a day at the White House should belong solely to the champion, LSU and Coach Mulkey. We would welcome the First Lady and President to come to Iowa’s “House” – Carver Hawkeye Arena — any time!
Women's basketball, a profile:
She is a four-year, hard-nosed, soft-hearted captain.
The Glue.
Someday, a home-run hire as a coach.
And in her sixth season at Iowa, Kate Martin is in the midst of ‘the best times of my life.’

Hawkeyes saluting loved ones on the back of their pink uniforms.
Sharon Goodman's uniform says MOMMA, and if that doesn't crush you ...
Her mother, Connie Goodman, died Feb. 10, 2020, after a four-year battle with cancer. She was 58.
Drake Relays feature:
Due to a genetic condition, Solon's

has 20/400 vision. She'll likely never drive a car. When she talks to you, she can't seen your facial features.
On the track, she's one of the state's elite long sprinters.

Another TV record, blasted out of the water.
South Carolina-Iowa drew 18.7 million viewers. Peaked at 24 million.
Most-watched basketball game (including MBB and NBA) since 2019.
NCAA women's basketball tournament:
As the Hawkeyes keep winning, Megan Gustafson keeps setting her alarm and watching from Greece.
What the 2019 national player of the year said about Monika Czinano, Caitlin Clark and more.
Just off phone with Lucy Olsen.
She experienced the first tornado warning of her life yesterday in Iowa City.
Story will be updated with her comments soon.
Spring-sporters:
I'm crushed for you. I know how hard some of you worked to stay in shape with a glimmer of hope that there would be some semblance of a season.
Will be my first spring with no Drake Stadium visit since 1996.
Sad for me.
More sad for you.
It's a service anniversary today.
Grateful for 25 years at The Gazette. Dream job then, dream job now.
Can't even begin to count the impactful people I've met along the way.
As always, thanks for reading, and thanks for following.
Here's hoping the best days are still ahead.
Iowa's Sharon Goodman, is the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2024 NCAA Division-I Women’s Basketball Championship for the second year in a row.
Pulled out my phone yesterday for final seconds of
@CentralLyon
and
@PellaChristian
and this fell into my lap. In case you thought sportsmanship is dead, it’s not.
A subtle thing: Maquoketa Valley has put Anna Nefzger in the scorebook as
#22
all season.
Nefzger would have been a senior this year, passed in an ATV accident between 7th/8th grade.
She was on trajectory to be the athletic equal of Imler, Tucker and Whittenbaugh.

Holy Cross' Kaitlyn Flanagan, on coming to Iowa City for the NCAA tournament:
"When we saw that we were coming here, we freaked out because we have seen what Iowa has done for women’s basketball. You can truly feel the energy and the respect the fans have for the sport."
A little side note:
Before the season, received a nastygram from a professor when I released my preseason rankings.
"What are you doing? We can't have a season. I demand you take those down, blah, blah, blah."
Well, we made it.

Email from a reader:
“Iowa needs taller, more athletic players … needs to recruit better.”
Names three players, misspells all of them.
“You need to re-evaluate your thinking of the future of this team.”
Weren’t they NCAA runners-up?
Simply exhausting.

BREAKING:
Iowa's Caitlin Clark is the Associated Press women's basketball player of the year.
The honor comes a day after Clark was awarded the Naismith.
Looking back a little more than a week ... how significant does Iowa's win over South Carolina in the Final Four look now?
The Gamecocks went 1-8-10 in the WNBA Draft.
The legacy of the 2022-23 Hawkeyes:
Big Ten tournament champions.
NCAA national runners-up.
Wildly entertaining.
Adored.
A look back at an unforgettable season, and a peek at 2023-24:
Experienced brief nirvana last night on the infield at Linn-Mar Stadium.
70 degrees and no wind at dusk. Closed my eyes for maybe 20 seconds and listened to the kids encouraging their teammates, PA in the background.
The rhythm of track and field.
It was … perfect.
Took a dive crossing a street on a run. Wish it was a more heroic story than that.
Some would say I’ve never looked better.
Thanks to the kind Indy folks who drove me back to the hotel.
This may sound radical, but ...
My proposal to overhaul the 2020-21 Iowa high school sports calendar. Fall sports to spring. Spring sports to fall.
A 7-game football schedule, with Week 1 on March 19. Championship games in the Dome, June 3-4.
Read on:
Boys state basketball TV timeouts per game: 8.
Girls state basketball TV timeouts per game: 0.
Which do you suppose allowed better flow to games?
