Nothing in reality fits neatly into human-derived categories, including what we call biological sex. In science, we make models of the world to help us understand and communicate. But a model is not the thing it represents. To think otherwise is error, and hubris.

On trans rights as reproductive rights: “Anxiety about trans people & reproduction, & the laws & rules that it produces, cut both ways… The objective is to control the means of reproduction. That’s usually the goal of movements that purport to protect women & girls.”

In the late 1960s, Richard Cash, a young public-health researcher, showed that a simple cocktail of salt, sugar and clean water could check the ravages of cholera and other diseases. The innovation saved an estimated 50 million lives. He has died at 83.

I'm a socialist voting Harris 😩 Here's why 🧵 - Dems are all the ol' capitalist America problems that we're used to, from AOC to Dick Cheney. Trump is christian qanon billionaire fascism. We can beat capital, fascists kill us pretty quick. Hard to build revolution if we're dead

As controversies go, it was easy to miss this one. It all took place within the conservative media ecosystem. But it could foreshadow what might happen to the U.S. service academies if Trump is elected next month.

If you actually seriously give a single care about climate change or the environment, you will not vote for Jill Stein. We don’t have another 4 years on Trump to waste. Fight to win, not to lose. #HarrisWalz2024 #VoteBlue

This is what things looks like at 1.5 degrees of warming. Think about what it looks like at twice that, which is where we’re headed unless we do a *lot* more very quickly.

We often talk about being coerced into assisted suicide by relatives but the real danger is being coerced by circumstances. From social care to pain relief, “I want the choice to die” will only truly be a free choice when society gives desperate people a genuine alternative.

This exchange should be studied for a long time. The interviewer read the book, not to gain new insight, but to get angry that it wasn't written from the perspective he preferred. He expected Coates to crumble under his onslaught. But Coates didn't. That's what makes it powerful.

Ta-Nehisi Coates’ new book, “The Message,” is a trio of interconnected essays that examine how the stories people tell — or avoid telling — can shape and even distort reality: “I am most concerned always with those that don’t have a voice.” https://t.co/bDsBxZMbah
