Parcel delivery firm DPD have replaced their customer service chat with an AI robot thing. It’s utterly useless at answering any queries, and when asked, it happily produced a poem about how terrible they are as a company. It also swore at me. 😂
You want world-leading?
It's our music.
It's our musicians.
It's our art.
Today has demonstrated this, yet again. Our politicians would do well to remember that.
@lewis_goodall
And all of these incredible arts organisations - losing 50% funding this year, then 100% next year:
City of B'ham Symphony Orchestra
Birmingham REP Theatre
Birmingham Royal Ballet
IKON Gallery
Birmingham Opera Company
FABRIC
Sampad
Ex Cathedra
Legacy Centre of Excellence
B:Music
Devastating news from Birmingham City Council with colossal budget cuts incoming. Arts organisations including CBSO, B'ham REP Theatre, B'ham Royal Ballet & B'Ham Opera Company set to have 50% funding cut this year, then 100% (!) funding cut next year. Absolutely criminal. (🧵)
@GIrelandPianist
Screenshots taken from my phone just now! Trying to find a parcel which never turned up. No closer to finding my parcel, but had an entertaining 10 minutes with this chatbot 😂
Thrilled to announce that last night I managed to put the cover on a grand piano the right way around, on my first attempt.
So massively grateful to everyone that’s supported me along the way, but tainted with sadness that no one else witnessed this once-in-a-lifetime event.
Pure joy on the
@Eurostar
this evening when the wonderful train guard, despite his best efforts to keep a straight face, got the giggles while announcing our arrival into London. The whole train was soon laughing with him. 😁
WHO. CARES.
Honestly, it doesn’t matter. Clap if you want. Don’t clap if you don’t want. The Arts in this country are in ruins at the moment. There are so many discussions to be had, a hell of a lot of money to be found and thousands of jobs to be saved.
Not the time for this.
With opera in theatres now strongly discouraged, Arts Council England have just announced a comprehensive list of all the places that opera should now be performed in, instead:
Thrilled to announce that as of midnight tonight, I am the new Artist in Residence at “My House”.
It’s an unpaid programme, but seems to be a fairly permanent position. Hoping that it leads to minimal exposure.
Thanks for all the support.
On this day..
2010: 16y/o me goes to
@glyndebourne
for the first time, auditioning to play in their community opera, Knight Crew. Never seen or heard an opera.
2020: Opera is my full time job and I’m about to start work on my 7th show at Glyndebourne.
Life is funny sometimes.
Lots of spare time on my hands at the moment, so I’ve decided to retrain as a tenor. Really pleased with how it’s going so far, and thrilled to share an early recording with you all x
Yesterday…
- Longborough Opera sent SIX covers on.
- Garsington sent THREE covers on.
- Waterperry had ONE cover singing + someone walking role
That’s just from a quick scan of my social media today. I’m sure there were more. COVID is still crippling our industry.

Hi
@RishiSunak
,
Support for the 5 million self-employed in the UK ends in 11 days.
Today, I had a call to say that yet another project has been cancelled. I now have only ONE contract left in 2020.
My industry has collapsed overnight - what happened to leaving no one behind?
I fully appreciate that this is an important day for the country. But just a friendly reminder that every time you create another bank-holiday, all your self-employed friends lose a day of earnings. Yours sincerely, a freelance musician who has had all his worked cancelled today.
Peter Grimes tonight
@RoyalOperaHouse
was simply mind-blowing. I’ve waited years to see it.
@fatboyclayton
gaving one of the best performances of anything I’ve ever seen.
I dare you to find me a more on-the-edge-of-your seat moment in opera than the 5 mins leading up to THIS 🤯:
14 tickets.
7 shows.
£220.
👏
@E_N_O
👏
That’s an average of £15 per ticket. I can’t think of many other theatres on London’s West End that can boast that…
Proud to be at Parliament Square this morning for

campaign, raising awareness of the desperate situation of the UK arts, and protesting at our government’s response.
We are not a hobby. We contribute billions to the economy.
Support the arts. Save artists.

It’s been a tough year for everyone, including
@Usher
. Delighted to discover that he has also started selling Christmas ornaments. Please consider supporting him.
Merry Christmas YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, Yeah.... YEAH! ⛄️ 🎅🏼

Hi
@TfL
. I know this is SUCH a boring tweet, but is anything being done to reduce the noise of the tube? Travelling on the Piccadilly line (and others) and the screeches in the tunnels are painfully loud - and almost certainly above a safe limit. I need my ears for work!👂
Looking for a brief moment of respite from all the darkness and sadness in the world at the moment? Here is the reaction of 1200 local schoolchildren at the end of our performance of L’elisir d’amore today at
@glyndebourne
.
What a morning.
So excited to have been appointed the assistant conductor & répétiteur for the
@RoyalOperaHouse
Community Chorus out in Thurrock. Baptism of fire first rehearsal tonight, covering for
@JeremyHaneman
! Can’t wait to work with this amazing group over the coming months.
Yet another day feeling like our industry isn't valued, appreciated or even wanted in this country. Yet another step backwards. Yet another petition asking - begging - to be saved.
UK classical music - a genuinely 'world-leading' (🤮) industry. Not for much longer.
#bbcsingers
Jürgen single-handedly doing more to make opera accessible and appealing to the people of the UK than I have managed to achieve in 10 years of outreach workshops.
The UK creative industry contributed over £100 billion to economy in 2018.
I understand that business is vital but with the music industry currently in ruins, how wonderful would it be to tune into a daily briefing and see this government acknowledging our sector even exists. ☹️
As someone who doesn’t live with their partner, and has had to do huge stretches of the past year apart from them, it is frustrating to look through the 68page roadmap from the government for lockdown easing and see that you only seem to exist if you are married with family.
I’m a bit late to the party, but I finally got to see Guys and Dolls tonight
@_bridgetheatre
. It was one of the best nights I have ever spent at a theatre. Pure and total relentless joy from start to finish. I never wanted it to end. If you see anything this summer, make it this!
I love a Nando’s, but I’d love support from our government even more.
Once you’ve finished your peri-peri chips, perhaps you could update the millions of self-employed in this country currently facing no financial support as of next Monday?
When Boris inevitably “cancels Christmas” at 4pm today can we try and remember that this is still six days more notice than just about every other religious festival got?
Akhnaten at ENO. An incredible production I’ve waited years to see.
@philipglass
&
@openspacer
have created absolute magic with this show. A full house at the Coliseum, cheering on the most incredible group of performers both on and under the stage. 🤩

BREAKING NEWS: Theatres and concert halls can open*!

*But all live performances are forbidden. A theatre with no performances is about as effective at bringing in income as a swimming pool with no water, a hotel with no rooms, or a restaurant with no food. So that’s great.

What made NH Opera special was that it offered young singers fresh out of music college the chance to perform roles that they wouldn’t yet be booked for elsewhere. Do we need another festival of “internationally renowned artists”? We desperately need work for young singers! [1/2]
Nevill Holt is proud to announce an exciting new chapter in its award-winning history as it becomes Nevill Holt Festival, welcoming a lineup of internationally renowned artists to Leicestershire from June 1st - 26th, 2024
I owe *so much* to the Glyndebourne Tour and the Glyndebourne learning and engagement team.
This is utterly devastating, I’m completely lost for words.
Glyndebourne regrets to announce that it will no longer be able to tour as planned in 2023, following a reduction to its Arts Council England (ACE) funding for touring and its learning and engagement work.
Amateur singing in a choir? Too dangerous to be allowed. Amateur singing at the football? Actively encouraged.
I know I’m screaming into an echo-chamber here, but this is just getting ridiculous now, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking.

When did you last see THIS many people on a stage?!
@Guildhallschool
leading the way out of this pandemic with Mahler’s 2nd Symphony tonight. Seeing all those students playing (so brilliantly) together, after so much time forced apart and online, was truly incredible.
As the second wave & possible lockdown looms, just another friendly reminder that self-employed people in the UK have received no government support since AUGUST*, despite many still having zero work.
*assuming they actually qualified - millions have received absolutely nothing
So sad to hear about the permanent closure of Phantom of the Opera after 34 (!) years in the West End. No matter what you think about ALW, this a terrifying sign of the state of things in the industry at the moment. Horrible feeling it won’t be the last. ☹️
I loathe the Conservative Party.
I’m sick to death of the Labour Party.
No point voting for any other party.
Like so many people my age, I feel politically homeless, constantly let down by politicians from across the spectrum. It’s relentless, depressing and so frustrating.
At a time of gloom, cancellations and general stress as a freelancer, a huge shout out to this organisation that not only chased me to get my invoice in to them before Christmas, but then paid me 36 MINUTES after I sent it over. 😍 THIS is the stuff that matters.
This heatwave is 100% a ploy by spiders to get us to open all the windows in our homes so that they can scurry on in, like the little eight-legged scoundrels that they are.
Nothing like getting to your hotel after a long day of work, checking in, heading up to the room, opening the door and… finding a random man lying on your bed in his socks. 🧦😬
I hope he’s happy to take the sofa.
I’m not sure who needs to hear this today, but here’s your occasional reminder to publicise the names of ALL the musicians involved in a performance of any kind, whether the advertisement is on social media, digital media or leaflets and flyers.

So massively proud of
@michael_laff
for his performance in the final of the Kathleen Ferrier Awards 2021. There is no greater feeling than performing alongside one of your best pals. ☺️
A very happy week of opera-making. Having the best time working on the revival of Don Pasquale for
@Glyndebourne
Tour 2021, with our glorious cast & team. Then a Sunday spent in music calls for Pay the Piper - bringing this new work to life with our wonderful young singers. ☺️
Huge congratulations to these incredible singers - what a line-up!
A real shame that none of the equally incredible pianists they are performing with are credited here on Twitter or on the Wigmore Hall website. They deserve publicity, credit and praise too!

We are delighted to announce our Finalists for the 2022 Kathleen Ferrier Awards:

Joel Terrin (Baritone)
@esmebsmith

HELLO LOVELY SINGERS. While we are stuck at home in Lockdown 3.0, if anyone needs any backing tracks recorded (audio and/or video), then I am able to make these from home.

This is what a socially distanced theatre looks like: at a concert at the State Theater of Hesse in Wiesbaden, Germany, which normally seats 1,000, less than 200 audience members were admitted.
Full of first-day-of-school excited/nervous energy as we start rehearsals on Le comte Ory today
@GarsingtonOpera
. I cannot wait to work on this ridiculous opera over the next couple of months. So excited/grateful to be back in a rehearsals full-time, after what feels like an age.
Opening of Le comte Ory at
@GarsingtonOpera
! Six weeks of glorious music making with a wonderful team, and lots of men dressed as nuns. It’s been a blast! So grateful to everything that Garsington have done to make this season go ahead safely, despite the circumstances.
WHAT a line-up. So proud of
@michael_laff
getting to the final, and really excited to perform alongside so many incredible singers and pianists tomorrow evening in the final 😁
It is also a testament to our incredible cover casts, staff directors and music staff who are all working overtime at the moment to keep our shows on their feet - reacting to huge changes with often no notice, and adapting to whatever is thrown at them.

Ridiculously excited for opening night of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream tonight at
@guildhallschool
. It’s been an incredible (& exhausting!) few months working alongside the absolute best bunch of people, both on and off the stage, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.
Failed Wordle today. Streak reset to zero. Day ruined. Stupid game. Never liked it anyway. Should’ve seen it coming after yesterday’s abomination of a word. I hope you’re all happy, with your shiny green boxes plastered all over my feed. Aren’t you all smug. Well done you.
Been a great first week of rehearsals for

down in sunny Cardiff. My brain hurts and my fingers ache, but what an incredible bunch of singers & creatives they’ve brought together to tackle this beast of a piece. What. A. Team.
It’s inspiring and exhausting in equal measure. It’s certainly not sustainable. This isn’t an industry living with COVID, this is desperately trying to cling-on and survive with COVID. So many burnt-out people right now, and it’s getting worse not better.
[3/4]
And so it begins. I will never forgive those who lied to our country time and time again, or the media that profited from spreading those lies without holding any of them to account.
@PippaCrerar
I’m so glad we’ve got someone like Keir Starmer holding them to account. He’s got a lot to prove, but I’ve been so impressed with what I’ve seen so far. Quietly optimistic about something to do with British politics for the first time in a long time.
Finally got to see Cabaret this evening. It’s absolutely astounding.
Ate my body-weight in dim sum beforehand.
Spent the day preparing a new opera.
29th birthday really wasn’t too bad. ☺️
I have upped my (already insanely high) garlic intake massively over the past year. Not a chance in hell I’m removing my mask any time soon. For all your sakes.
Sussex-bound and really looking forward to being back at
@Glyndebourne
this autumn as Assistant Conductor for L’elisir d’amore, and as Chorus Master for the Glyndebourne Youth Opera’s performances in the Glyndebourne Talent Showcase and Christmas Concerts. Can’t wait!
Hi
@bamptonopera
! I’ve just seen the announced singers for the final of your 2023 competition via
@OperawireNews
. I’m assuming they are not performing solo, so it would be wonderful to know the names of the equally brilliant pianists who will be performing alongside them. (1/3)
@OliverDowden
@HelpMusiciansUK
1) Ok, great.
2) All our work is cancelled until at least next 2021. This will not help us financially over the coming months.
3) “Reopening culture”. Lol what?
