So many things about this are nuts but one I can’t get my head around is how the calculate the “gain”. Investment in a property doesn’t end when you purchase it. There’s maintenance, repairs, renovation, extension. Hundreds of thousands over years.

Many of them really seem to not think of inhabitants of the Middle East and Africa as people, capable of independent thought and action and decision making. To them whole continents are no more than NPCs reacting to western stimuli.
