Okay, I've *finally* sent out a newsletter. I'm trying out Substack. Let's see if it works. In this one:.- Personal updates.- A theory of 3 constraints in tech services.- Medi-Cal friction mapping.

An experiment I would very much like to see:. - Take a legacy system everyone is afraid of changing. - Use an agentic AI coding tool to generate high quality characterization test coverage for the legacy code base. - Assess if it provides enough safety to make changes fast now!.

The most shocking thing of getting even semi-decent at mindfulness meditation is realizing just how damn anxious I have normally been in many contexts!. At the airport and being able to notice it come up is astounding!.

I think I've come to the view that there's a subtle category error made by a lot of people who worry about "automation" in government. It points at automation itself, when the root failures stem from mismanagement that flow down from heavy constraints and disallowing judgment.

A kernel I need to write up:. - Abundance should take seriously AI as a lever on state capacity.- *Particularly* because much govt work today is *not* human judgment work.- What needs MORE space for human judgment is the management OF the automation, technology, and AI in govt.

Wow. Framing policies in the context of civil rights backfires and reduces support in this study — across many dimensions.

I really want to love @obsdmd and files-first but. Obsidian Sync just very consistently does not work for me across devices.

I know not everyone tracks safety net details, so as someone who does, this bill is the largest cut in the food stamp program in history.

As someone who has been working on improving public benefits for a more than a decade, this is a sad moment. One of the more implicit things about "policy windows" is that there are also *negative* windows:. - Years when nothing happens, but also. - "Retreat" moments.

the Senate-passed version of the Big Beautiful Bill has a wacky SNAP cut provision, rewritten to win over Lisa Murkowski, that appears to give states an incentive make MORE erroneous SNAP payments instead of fewer. House members are literally laughing at it.

So, if I'm reading the bill’s SNAP provisions correctly (and talking with people, they see the same thing) looks like it incentivizes states to INCREASE their payment error rate above 13% in the next three months because it pushes out the state cost-sharing provision to 2029….

Can any housing/CEQA nerds help me understand how we can track the impact of this on the margin? Is it housing starts in specified zips? (Partly trying to get at where we might see follow on constraints).

You've probably been hearing a lot about budget bills, environmental reviews, and labor fights out here on the West Coast. It's all adding up to probably the biggest policy change in modern California history. Here's a breakdown for the perplexed.
