It was wonderful to hear @IanByrneMP talking about the importance of playing out yesterday. "Looking back, we realised how lucky we were. We didn't have two ha'pennies to rub together but we had freedom and green spaces, and we were healthy, and I absolutely adored it". 🙏
We’re on our way to the House of Lords to help launch this crucial report. A huge opportunity for Govt to turn the child health crisis around by creating environments that enable them to be outside near home - active, happy and part of their communities.

Where a child lives - the built & natural environment around them – is crucial to giving them the best start in life. Our report reveals how better planning & urban design can help the government meet its aim to raise the healthiest generation in history. https://t.co/1Jvtro7tag

It’s not the scrapes, bumps and bruises from risky play that most parents are concerned about. It’s the very real danger of being hit and killed by a car. That’s what’s stopping children from having the freedom, adventure and free play they once had (and still need).
Before the 1990s, kids experienced more risk, more thrills, more physical injuries, and fewer psychological injuries than they do today. Kids had more freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. We have forgotten that kids are antifragile.

Compare and contrast this other recent Bristol Downs event which was somehow allowed to turn what should be safe, playable public green space into a free car park for the whole summer holidays!

@KarenBassLA Imagine LA as a city where everyone can walk and cycle, children can play out in the street and get around independently & everyone is happier and healthier! Lots of help on hand from international community… @BrentToderian @Cycling_Embassy @Penalosa_G @playingout

Also another chance for an Olympic city to show the rest of the world what’s possible to do in four years with the right political will. Sure Anne Hidalgo can give them a few tips from Paris!

Listening to @theJeremyVine call-in on stress of summer holiday childcare. Restoring @playingout for all children would massively help! First steps for Govt: make streets safe and ban “no ball games” signs.

Loved the #Paris2024Olympic women’s street skate final so much. “Everyone’s rooting for everyone else, even if it means not winning a medal yourself”. If only the whole world was like this. Also - more skate-able spaces for all please! ❤️

Read all about it! Playing Out is in @TheAtlantic. This brilliant piece covers *why* children lost their freedom, what that loss has meant for us all and what now needs to change big-picture. Thank you @stephmurrayyyy & fellow contributors!

In many ways, a world built for cars has made life so much harder for grown-ups.

Today, kids are practically forbidden in the street. But a century ago, the street was the primary locus of kids' play. What happened? & did we lose anything by moving play from public streets into private yards & gated playgrounds? I tackle these Qs in my latest for @TheAtlantic

"We will work with local government to plan new housing in the best possible places, with the supporting infrastructure, public services and green spaces that residents need." Psst, @AngelaRayner: a focus on children & young people will help you do this.

Great to hear @baileyballoons on @BBCRadio4 Saturday Live just now. To add to Clive’s warning about driving to #BristolBalloon Fiesta - please don’t!! It’s hellish. What does @bristolballoon @BristolCouncil have in place to encourage sustainable travel??
