In 2017 144 people died in 'work-related accidents'. 4x as many people - 520 - died from crashes involving working drivers. The driver's seat is just as much a workplace as the building site or factory floor. So why is driving for work so unregulated?

This exchange between .@livingstone_s. & @daisygreenwell makes me think that campaigners, academics & experts need to try much harder to find common ground on #smartphone & #socialmedia regulation. #Bigtech will be happy to see the level of disagreement.

How much are smartphones harming children and what should we do about it? BBC InDepth hosts a debate between a campaigner and an academic.

It’s twilight. 2 girls aged about 8 are playing in the colourfully lit fountains outside my local town hall. As the jets rise and fall randomly, the girls point at the jets and chant “You can’t get me, naa naa na naa naa,” over and over. #playfulmoments.

If you read anything about #Grenfell - and you should - read this piece. Its author has followed the grim story for years. I cannot help but see parallels with other examples of state weakness and corporate capture of regulations, from motor vehicles to social media apps.
The dark heart of this catastrophe lies in this simple, depressing narrative: the state stepped back, corporate greed stepped in and innocent people died. Bit by me for The Guardian: .

I've added a comment to this piece, which you can read here:

It may outrage the right, but reducing speed limits in populated areas makes roads safer for everybody and journeys smoother, says author Jonn Elledge

This piece makes sound points about slower speeds. But it undermines its own arguments, as it is almost entirely written from a motorists' point of view. We need to start seeing streets differently, and this means moving away from car-centric thinking.

Sad news. Nicky was an early & dedicated champion for children & teenagers in planning & housing, and an effective campaigner: incredible to see the causes she fought for & battles she won. I feel lucky to have known her, & will miss her smile, warmth, energy & determination.
Nicky's family is very sad to announce that she has died. She passed away peacefully at home on 30th August.

@LabourParty Lots more to comment on (including the role of poverty and disadvantage, and health and physical activity). But I will finish by noting that 1 of the 6 recs is "let children play." 6/n Good work @childrensociety

In 2007 a similar finding from UNICEF prompted a media outcry and lively public debate, and led to the ambitious @LabourParty Every Child Matters strategy. Now? I wonder. 5/n

The latest @childrenssociety #goodchildhood report makes depressing reading. It is worth a close look, as it is a detailed, robust and revealing dataset on UK children, with international comparisons & trend data going back to 2010. 1/n

RT @jneill: @timrgill @SocietyGuardian I managed to annualise the monthly MHS32a chart. Now we can see the rising % of all referrals that….

I meant a 50-fold increase in NHS *anxiety* referrals, as in article. On a closer look, much of this increase seems to be relabelling of other conditions as anxiety. The increase in MH referrals overall is steadier over the period (tho still a worry). See @jneill exchange below.

There is a problem with children’s #mentalhealth. But these figures - showing a *50-fold increase* in NHS referrals in just 7 years or so - cannot just be down to greater prevalence of MH disorders. We do children a disservice if we leap to conclusions.
