I'm half-Chinese and my partner is Punjabi. We grew up with people like this either imposing the "model minority" myth on us, or else ostracizing us if we didn't strictly adhere to the stereotype. Either way is both dehumanizing and racist. This is blatantly racist.

When I was a kid, I associated Canada’s Indian community with engineers and doctors. I hate that this population is being diluted by a new cohort of uneducated village kids who seem more intent on scamming the system than assimilating.

A hill I will die on. Literacy has always been determined by politics. Access to literacy has never been neutral. It’s intentionally been shaped by systems of power, privilege, and exclusion.

for any Americans concerned about the integrity of Canada's elections, remember that Canada does not use electronic voting in federal elections. we vote by placing pine cones in empty TimBit cartons. the winner is required to eat these pine cones at their swearing-in ceremony.

Using marginalized people to recruit other marginalized people & discarding them because they expect diversity, equity, & inclusion to be a real focus in an organization is a form of academic exploitation. Marginalized people are more than optics, checklists, & convenience.

Human rights shouldn’t be a partisan issue. I don’t believe homophobia and transphobia are intrinsic to conservative politics. But when the conservative leader defends the erosion of children’s rights and uses anti-queer dogwhistles, I will call it what it is: homophobia.

Or, maybe, you can see how the young people get involved with organizing around the carceral state because they have lived experiences or bore witness to the violence of policing Maybe we all dont trust cops and some of us wanna do something about it. Might be a PoC thing tho.

(1/2) We need more attention to selection bias in qualitative research. A new study in a top sociology journal examines "how young people experience policing," but it draws only on interviews of youth in an organization devoted to abolishing the police, one that bombards...

"In Toronto’s Bridle Path, Bayview Village, and Willowdale, the average resident can expect to live past 84 years—higher than even Japan. Meanwhile, in Rexdale, Oakridge, and Moss Park, death comes more than a decade earlier—on par with countries like Tunisia and Nicaragua."
