“Unprecedented”- there’s no better word to describe the crisis at
#CHEO
. Yesterday, we reassigned our Surgical Day Unit and redeployed clinicians from all areas of the hospital to open a second Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Here's how YOU can help:
CHEO remains a high-risk environment. Many of the children and youth we serve are immuno-compromised, unvaccinated, and vulnerable. We will continue to require everyone who enters our facilities to be screened and masked.
1/8 We wanted to share a bit of a snapshot of what’s been happening at
#CHEO
as we put all hands of deck to tackle the unprecedented volumes of kids and youth needing urgent care this viral season.
8/8 And before we wrap up, just a friendly reminder to everyone to follow public health guidance—please mask-up in crowded spaces, get vaccinated, stay home when sick & wash your hands. We can all help protect kids + support the dedicated health professionals who care for them.
Our Children’s Treatment Centre school had a very special visitor this afternoon:
@BradyTkachuk71
from the
#Ottawa
@Senators
! 🏒 He took the time to get down on the carpet to play & gave out autographed
#Sens
baseball caps. Thank you, Brady!
#CHEO
is ranked as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the world according to
@Newsweek
! This is a testament to our caring staff, dedicated volunteers and generous community
4/4 To all kids and youth 12+ years old sharing selfies and your reasons for getting vaccinated, we see you. We support you. We all want
#CommunityImmunity
and for this relentless pandemic to end.
We all love children. Doctors, nurses and other staff at children's hospitals play important roles by providing care for little humans. This morning, it was my honour to dance Bhangra with staff of Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) for their joy and positivity.
@CHEO
1/3 Today 215 orange ribbons were attached to trees in
#CHEO
’s Butterfly Garden, our special memorial garden for children who have died. In this way, CHEO's community honours the lives of the
#215children
whose bodies were found in a mass grave at the Kamloops residential school.
After years of trying, we have officially been able to obtain
@CHEO
as our Twitter handle! This will make it easier for families to find us on Twitter and it better represents all of the services we provide at
#CHEO
🎉🥳
7/8 Thanks to this support from
@redcrosscanada
, some of our redeployed staff will be able to go back to their regular roles so Team
#CHEO
can continue to provide the safe, world-class care that our patients deserve.
4/ This is the trend worldwide – when community spread is rampant, no one is spared. Omicron doesn’t discriminate by age range. One baby hospitalized is one too many in our view.
Wow amazing! We are beyond thrilled. All thanks to your support the
#CHEOtelethon
raised $9,713,300!! That will mean the world for children and youth in our community. Thank you for all you do 🙏

3/8 We’ve redeployed staff and expanded care in our surgical and medical care units, added extra beds and workers in our pediatric intensive care units, emergency department and inpatient units, and asked non-clinical staff to support clinical teams wherever possible.
"Children are not small adults and they definitely don’t deserve an under-sized health-care system. That was true half a century ago. Our generation’s greatest gift to the future can be to right-size kids’ care." —
@AlexMunter
It's all smiles behind those masks for the
#CHEO
team at Brewer Arena Assessment Centre. Dr. Jason Brophy, Debbie Turner & Abby Browne are proud to roll up their sleeves (only figuratively!) to take on their new roles of screening kids & youth for
#COVID19
4/8 We’ve also asked for extra support from organizations across the region to ensure our young patients and their families get the care they need. And they have really stepped up.
We just wanted to give you a sense of why waits are longer now than anyone would like and why you may want to explore other options. Thanks for your support and understanding. *end*
One of the best things we can model for kids is that hate has no place in society. With disturbing reminders that anti-Semitism is on the rise, we speak out & stand in solidarity with Jewish friends & neighbours during
#Hanukkah
& always.
#ChagSameach
We're offering FREE parking temporarily! Starting today (Mar 28) parking gates at
#CHEO
are lifted so there is no charge. We know some people prefer to avoid public transport in support of
#physicaldistancing
, so this is another way we can support you
Our emergency department just had its busiest May ever and is on-pace to set a record for June. Yesterday, for the first time anyone can recall, we had *16* patients who were admitted that didn’t have a bed to go to. So, they stayed in ‘emerg.’ Some for almost 48 hours. +
Our Emergency Department is experiencing heavy volumes and we always see the sickest, most urgent cases first. Come prepared with snacks, blankets, toys, etc. to make your wait as comfortable as possible.
#CHEO
is always here to provide urgent care when you need it.
THANK YOU
#OTTAWA
! The
#CHEOtelethon

Seeing today's protests taking place outside of hospitals is distressing, especially for exhausted health-care staff & the families needing care. Thank you to everyone across
#OttCity
sending messages of love, solidarity & support — we all appreciate it.
Dylan gave his mom the best
#MothersDay
gift, hearing the sound of her voice! Today we celebrate all the moms out there who are loving, supporting and encouraging. We admire all of you.
5/ The moral of this story? Adults need to limit their contacts & get fully vaccinated to protect young ones. Vaccination is the best layer of protection for you and those vulnerable around you – of all ages.
Over the last six weeks, our in-patient medical wards have been packed. Again, with more young people than normal who are sicker than normal. COVID, flu, surgeries, and many other causes – all that are keeping kids in hospital for overnight stays. +
Thank you to healthcare workers in
#OttCity
who are working tirelessly. To those living, working & commuting downtown, we recognize the added pressures you're under right now and that many feel unsafe. We hope for a safe return to normal soon. Thank you for your dedication.
#CHEO
is seeing a disturbing trend of infants with head trauma. Along with
@OttawaHealth
&
@CASO_SAEO
, we're asking you to reach out if you/someone you know needs help. It’s a stressful time for parents/ caregivers but there is support. It takes a village.
Thanks for your feedback! Online booking is on its way for the
#COVID19
#CHEO
Assessment Centre at Brewer. We know it’s tough on families to wait long or come back later, so we’re trying to make the experience better. We’ll share more information tomorrow, stay tuned!
We know Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 😷 can be scary for kids. But we want to let you know that we’re still your friendly health-care professionals under all the PPE. See? Molly from
#CHEO
's Emergency is still the same smiling, caring nurse
#COVIDottawa
3/4 But vile comments from anonymous, mean strangers on social media targeting teenagers who are excited about getting vaccinated crosses a line. It’s mean and totally inappropriate.
It's a record-breaking year! Our community raised over $1M at the 2018
#CNcycle
. That's $1,032,490 for oncology care and research and
#CHEO
and we couldn't be more proud of our sponsors, participants and volunteers. Thank you.
7/ We all must go the extra mile to protect the most vulnerable for hospitalization – tiny babies, kids who are immunocompromised, kids with chronic/complex conditions. Thanks for listening!
Thanks to advocacy from families, partners & local MPPs, our

volunteer Rick Patch celebrates a personal milestone — his 1000th shift! Rick has supported families in our playrooms and surgical day unit & also reviews safety protocols with newly admitted families. Congrats on this exciting milestone, Rick!
We want to give a huge shout-out and thank you to all of the Team

members at the Brewer Assessment Centre as well as to our

#COVID19
Since Friday, we have had more young people than normal for this time of year come to us with viruses, trauma, and injuries that are more severe than normal. Broken bones, head injuries, etc: ailments that require admissions to hospital. But we don’t have any free beds. +
6/ Yes, we can reduce kids’ risk and yes, kids needs to go to daycare/school because it’s essential. We know what we need to do — get vaccinated, increase access to testing, reduce contacts, etc. So kids can be kids.

That created a gridlock effect. It meant patients and families coming to emergency but didn’t need immediate care had to wait hours longer. It also meant we had to cancel some planned procedures for the coming week and reschedule others to make space. +

Obviously, we don’t do this lightly. It pains us to do. But that is the reality. We simply have more people needing care right now than we have space, beds, and people. +

Thank you to all the staff/medical staff working today & through the holidays to care for our kids.
3/ Previously we had up to 5 COVID-related admissions per month. In December we had 11, and so far, in January, we've had 28. 3 kids were in the Pediatric ICU. There are over 300,000 children & youth in our catchment area.
Making menstrual products available for free is one more thing we've done at

to make the lives of youth easier, especially during these uncertain times. No one should have to worry about being unable to afford these products. Kudos

1/3 Like most children's hospitals across Canada,
#CHEO
is experiencing unprecedented pressures. We are seeing many more kids/youth with respiratory infections like RSV, COVID and the seasonal flu. This means we're well over capacity and wait times are sadly longer than ever.

2/ We're seeing an increase in COVID-related admissions since mid-December. Those at greatest risk are children 4 and under (not eligible for vaccines) and older kids with complex medical conditions.
Please RT: we want to remind

that
