"The Government’s latest offer fails to address the medical jobs crisis and does nothing to stem the exodus of medics from this country." The health secretary must start treating doctors with respect, as @fletchjack writes in the @guardian 📢👇

We can still call off this week’s strike – if the health secretary meaningfully addresses job shortages, real-terms pay cuts and the ongoing exodus, chair of the BMA’s UK resident doctors committee

The BMA is made up of everyday doctors, of whom 29,215 (83%) voted against this deal. This isn’t a 52/48 Brexit style vote. This is a condemnation of a poor deal that was not acceptable.
Streeting says doctors strikes are 'irresponsible and dangerous' after the BMA voted to go ahead with industrial action The health secretary said the strike poses a 'serious risk to the NHS this week' as hospitals battle surging 'superflu' cases

Frontline doctors have spoken unequivocally. Strikes are not inevitable. I will make myself available at any time to negotiate a credible deal - right up until 0659 on Wednesday. Let’s turn down the Government rhetoric, get negotiating and get to a deal to settle this dispute.
Strikes will GO AHEAD from 17-22 December, after resident doctors in England voted overwhelmingly to reject the latest offer from @wesstreeting.

I am delighted to see Resident Doctors overwhelmingly send @wesstreeting a clear message that his recent offer wasn’t good enough It failed to meaningfully address the specialty training bottlenecks and offered absolutely nothing in continuing our journey to full pay restoration

Wes Streeting thought he could separate doctors from the BMA. Resident doctors have been clear: doctors *are* the BMA. The rejection of his offer shows doctors see through political spin. The Government should be clear; we are not going anywhere. See you on the picket lines!

The Government just doesn't get it. The BMA is representative of its members. Despite all the intrusive emails from NHS leaders harassing doctors to accept the offer, doctors have made it clear BOTH pay and jobs must be fixed. 22.50£/hr for a doctor is a bargain.

Turns out the poll of 200 doctors wasn’t representative because 29,215 voted to continue the strikes!
The BMA didn’t put our offer to their members and now we know why: they wouldn’t have backed their unnecessary and irresponsible strikes. They should give their members a say, call off these strikes and stop risking the NHS’s recovery. https://t.co/ZzOqs9scTO

The @BMAResidents have been branded juvenile delinquents, moaning Minnie’s, out of touch with our grassroots With an overwhelming 83% no vote on an 65% turnout these claims are put to bed for good @wesstreeting the ball is in your court

Government could reduce waiting lists by funding more anaesthetists. They haven’t. A shortage of anaesthetists causes operations to be cancelled on a daily to weekly basis. Long waiting lists are the fault of the government. Not doctors. Not strikes. The government.
Strikes will certainly disrupt operations and scans for patients. It is shameful that you and BMA leaders treat that so lightly - as if it is consequence free. That’s our family, friends and loved ones waiting longer when they’ve waited too long as it is.

Whilst many colleagues across different workforces do see common sense, applauding the headline of the article which they should, On rule for me, one rule for thee is a barrier to honest discussion about standards we should expect when dealing with people’s lives
The hypocrisy that exists within the health system at the moment is staggering “You can’t replace any profession with lesser trained people” Doctors in the #NHS: “When you say ‘any’..” “Shut up and respect multidisciplinary working” And we wonder.. Why are doctors so angry.

Does feel odd to try and settle a pay dispute without any movement on pay…. Government clearly feels it needed to do something and has little to lose - either the deal goes though or it doesn’t and it can continue to blame the BMA
The new offer for resident doctors seems pretty half baked. Nothing whatsoever on pay. The training posts they are creating are coming from existing LED roles, meaning zero jobs are being created and the dr unemployment crisis is completely untouched I would personally vote no

Doctors are still 21% behind in real terms & by any measure undervalued for training, skill, responsibility Yes other professionals also deserve fair pay. I support & encourage them to fight for their worth No worker should have to subside an underfunded service with low wage

Those numbers on pay are misleading https://t.co/gSZMhgDRjk Doctors want security and confidence about the future With pay, that is put in limbo and we take steps back in forging a trusting relationship when a sub inflation pay uplift (real term cut) is recommended 1/2
@PhilSmithIsBack The U.K. prioritisation changes the ratio dramatically. And you didn’t get a Tory SofS. You got one who delivered a 28.9% pay rise within 18 months of coming in! Give us a chance!

People who shouldn’t be anywhere near the Medical Training Review - due to their roles in encouraging doctor replacement- are involved in the Review Which pretty much sums up the leadership clique in the NHS And the state of things

It’s sort of this guys job to make sure there are enough doctors to serve the population. Why does it take strike action to get him to act?
I think the public would be appalled if I went ahead with the offer while they’re left suffering Christmas strikes. I don’t want this transactional relationship with the BMA, I want a partnership. I hope we can build that in 2026 if RDs vote for the offer and end the strikes.

Worrying. Heterogeneous training standards = dumbing down. Reemergence of hierarchy by training location. Going rural means being TRAPPED rural.

Hello @BMAResidents We’ve now shared the offer from Wes Streeting. On the headline, it sounds big: “4,000 jobs.” But you need to read the detail, not the headline. First: it’s only 1,000 more jobs this year. We currently have around 10,000 training posts and more than 30,000
