Thrilled to share the final version of this story! Another chapter in the endlessly fascinating world of reproductive fluids, led by former grad student @NoraAndFauna 🪰💓🪰
Excellent new work from colleagues @NoraAndFauna and @WolfnerLab showing how an odorant binding protein might have become co-opted for a reproductive function in Drosophila. It's now required for mating plug formation and thus fertility!

Thanks to Gerry Rubin for this remembrance of Michael Ashburner, a pioneer of Drosophila molecular genetics and of genomics. It's well worth a read. 1/n https://t.co/CRSP02zFDZ

Gorgeous! And based on one of the classics 😍
Today's 🎨 challenge: "Changes of the male accessory gland and vas deferans of serially mated males" (aka Figure 4 in "Effects of the Male Accessory Gland Secretion on Oviposition and Remating in Females of Drosophila melanogaster" by Fuyuo Hihara (1981) https://t.co/ruz58D1gzW)

I am excited to share the final version of our work on the genetic basis of virgin birth (parthenogenesis) in fruit flies! It was a joy working with @DK_Fabian @erikgarrison @LabGlover on this understudied phenomenon. https://t.co/y1rcag4cOE

Sperling et al. demonstrate that facultative parthenogenesis can be engineered in the non-parthenogenetic D. melanogaster by manipulating candidate genes identified in the naturally parthenogenetic...

1/14 🧵🔬 When it comes to studies involving different organisms, the unique communities, and terminology can create barriers to scientific advancement. We (@R_Mallarino & @C_Kratochwil)—researchers in mammalian 🐿🦓 and fish 🐠🐡 studies, teamed up to talk about color patterns!
