This predicts that the counterpart protein functions the same way in human cells and may have relevance to human cancer, where centriole duplication goes out of control. [3/3].

Our research in the fly, suggests that the Ana1 adopts different structures for each of these processes. We show this by generating different variant proteins that could restore centriole duplication to ana1 mutants, but not centriole elongation required to make flagellae. [2/3].

Adelaide was a world expert in Drosophila meiosis and the best fly geneticist in the Department. She left a technician’s position in the Ashburner lab to join us as research associate and made pioneering contributions to our genetic studies of Greatwall kinase and its substrates.

We are very sad to hear of the passing of Adelaide Carpenter, who had been in Genetics at Cambridge for over 30 years working mainly in our lab. A former full professor at UCSD, Adelaide came to Cambridge on sabbatical and never returned. Continued below.
