The RSPB has reported a significant increase in Western Capercaillie numbers at its Abernethy Forest reserve, providing a rare piece of positive news for a species facing extinction in the UK:

A 50% rise in lekking Western Capercaillie at Abernethy Forest RSPB in the Scottish Highlands offers cautious optimism for one of the UK's rarest birds, as intensive habitat management begins to pay...

When I was a bit mad I did 200 species in January. Ridiculous waste of money and something I couldn't condone nowadays. Only Travelodge and petrol companies benefited. Good tactical birding mind. 31 Bird Races.

Always good to get my @BirdTrack stats through for last year. No surprise with my most visited places - East Wretham Heath and Welney. Always room for improvement on my birding streak! Pleased to make my data available for research and conservation.

Another patch-based year shown in numbers. A difficult year for health reasons and a couple of trips away due to a Landlady from Hell forcing me out of Hawfinch House.

Might not look like much but this is the source of the River Trent on Biddolph Moor in Staffordshire not often I can say I had both feet either side of the Trent. With my book “Great British River” out in April was lovely to see this as the Trent is featured.

Astonishing and Appalling. If you can, watch this 80 second video to the end. This is a layby in Northants AFTER it has been litterpicked! Hats off to @TruckersUp for doing all they possibly can to clean up. We need a camera there... Please donate: https://t.co/QhbpBWa9VE

This is the M62 between Manchester and Leeds. Just look at it... neglect and degradation yet again in evidence. Why is @Heidi_Labour not holding the hopeless @NationalHways to account???? She gives them over £5 BILLION a year. This is inexcusable.

I've tried a few times to see this bird. Success this morning. Merlin, the UK's smallest bird of prey. Very distant. Phonescoped.

Brilliant BoP watching today ~ 2 Goshawks the absolute highlight, could have watched them for ages (one young ♀️ was up & around for close on 45 minutes or so). Still such a buzz to see this species ~ they were *so* rare back in the day (w/hushed tales of Derwent & Acres Down).

SHORELARK, Mow Cop, Cheshire - Probably bird of the moment in Cheshire, an over wintering bird staying loyal to the same muddy field over the winter months, interesting to see how long it stays before it moves on. Watercolour on ARCHES paper. @CAWOSBirding

Holkham got in on the white fronted goose influx today with a minimum count of 880, split over 2 groups, on the reserve. Didn't get the chance to check Overy or Norton so there were probably more about. Bonkers numbers

I must be the only birder in Cork not to have seen a Hoopoe in the last couple of days, but I did find this Alpine Swift this afternoon on the Sheep’s Head near the lighthouse. #birdwatching #birds

The way Leonard Rossiter would get half way through a line before bailing out, sometimes only a couple of words, is character acting of the highest order.
I've lost count of the amount of times I've delivered this line... And pass those crisps down I'm famished. #risingdamp #roybarraclough
