The goal of a PhD is not to learn some facts or read a few papers or learn a bunch of techniques. The goal of a PhD is to learn independence, problem solving, how to finish things you start, resilience, & gain the ability to adapt & think creatively. Learning these things is hard

1. I feel like this is such obvious advice that it's taken for granted & so no one says this to young scientists but READ PAPERS, read all the papers. As you move up in your career you'll have a lot less time to do this. Read everything that appeals to you not just in your field

1. This summer I've been thinking a lot about "cognitive load" which is term that has multiple definitions but for me means something like "the amount of processing, analysing, thinking, & deciding I can do in a day before my brain stops working" here's a short thread about that

Science must protect thinking time in a world of instant communication
nature.com
Nature - E-mails and instant messaging are core to research β but also a distraction. Researchers should study their impact on science, and how they can claw back time to concentrate.

So often the thorns of academia get limelight over the perks! Apropos a conversation with @sriram_varahan , where else do you get paid to (1) formulate YOUR ideas, rally a team to test it and relish the data π, whatever it is! (2) You can read all day and drown in it and come

My hot take for the day is that having a couch for people to take naps on is as essential a lab's ability to function as any pricey & fancy lab equipment they might have. Science is thinking work & the best thinking is done by properly rested minds.

I keep reminding PhD students that THE most important outcome of a PhD is not their publications, conferences, awards etc., but they themselves after this journey. PhD is a learning process in how to learn new things, solve new problems you run into. @VoicesofIndAcad @biopatrika

1. My top imaging trick to trainees is that before they spend any time taking pictures of the data they just sit there for a while & look at the stuff. Like seriously, sit back, crank some tunes, get cozy & spend some quality time with your slides.
