The findings by Professor Mittra’s team could have profound and disruptive effect on our understanding of mammalian genomics and evolution, and redefine how we understand ageing and diseases like cancer. 🧵11/14

The study found that the concatemers carry LINE-1 and Alu elements - “jumping genes” - that rearrange the host genome in unpredictable ways. 🧵10/14

Even more surprisingly, these concatemers are largely made of non-coding DNA -long thought to be "junk" - yet they take on powerful biological functions when reactivated after cell death. 🧵9/14

The blurring of the line between hereditary and satellite genome forms potentially offers a new mechanism for rapid genomic innovation and diversity opening new research avenues in biology and medicine. 🧵8/14

According to Professor Mittra, these findings suggest that a cell simultaneously harbours two genome forms: one that is inherited (hereditary genome) and numerous others that are acquired (satellite genomes). 🧵7/14
