As the decade progressed, San Francisco added 10 jobs for every 1 housing unit approved, putting tremendous pressure on Oakland. Land values for this neighborhood, relatively close to Ashby and MacArthur BART, exploded. Renters were economically displaced.

It's not hard to find and it's basically incoherent or full of lead paint chips.
@pdore1969 i dont think that the left case against yimbyism is too hard to find

Super funny that Cam Murray insists that we shouldn’t allow missing middle housing in rich inner suburbs because it won’t pencil (then why make it illegal?) And recommends ADUs instead.
“Perversely, it is the outer fringe where the “missing middle” is going to be most viable.” https://t.co/ELj0WswnBy

Places with anti-German sentiment during WWI saw an outmigration of German workers leading to a decline in manufacturing wages.
Places with higher anti-German sentiment during WWI lost skilled German workers, depressing wages of Americans. In the September issue, by Andreas Ferrara (@Andreas_Ferrara), Price Fishback

I wonder which "locals" TNR relied on for this background on Antioch... oh

Imagine if someone from LA called Dundalk MD or Norristown PA "affluent" suburbs in the midcentury. It totally misses the actual shape and arc of racial and class-based spatial changes.

According to TNR's resident Left NIMBY writer, Antioch was "[a]n affluent white suburb in the midcentury" as if all the paper, steel, chemical and other factories on the Delta waterfront were just window dressing. https://t.co/QVmmLEWlwc

Tbf, I enjoyed the podcasts and gritty memes back then. But it has been seven years and there is actual work to do beyond takes.

These kinds of guys are gonna be chasing the high of epic 2017 punditry (hermetically sealed from actual organizing and politics) for the rest of their lives and it is quite sad.

[someone who makes nonprofit digital toolkits for a living] Listen up civil engineers
@loomdoop @az_daniel_ Yeah, this thing. It’s a specific machine that drives pilings for building foundations.

Bc Hal only cares about media like NYT and TV ads he’s way more invested in high level abstractions than actual policy Many of the incentives in Harris’ housing plans are subsidies for public housing authorities, nonprofits and local governments to build mixed-income homes
Imagine looking a voter in the eye, whose rent has nearly doubled over the last four years, and telling her that your plan is to incentivize the construction of new homes that, IF the developers choose your neighborhood, will be ready at some distant point in the future.

@HalSinger Why do you think private equity roll-ups and common pricing algorithms are less of an issue in Minneapolis?

You can tell Hal is around the bend on culture war bc: 1) Most YIMBY skeptics concede regional supply effects but not local supply effects (extensive evidence exists for region & increasingly for local) 2) Hal concedes local supply effects and contests regional supply effects
Imagine looking a voter in the eye, whose rent has nearly doubled over the last four years, and telling her that your plan is to incentivize the construction of new homes that, IF the developers choose your neighborhood, will be ready at some distant point in the future.

UC: it’s gonna be a dorm YIMBYs: it’s a gonna be a dorm People’s Park Defenders: it’s a gonna be a dorm Left Pastoralists from Lamorinda: they’re building a parking lot!!!
@loomdoop It's absolutely gonna be a dorm. They've got the pilings sunk, and a framework in the middle. Not sure exactly why they're paving, but proly because the dirt was hella toxic. They've been pulling many truckloads of dirt out of their in the last few months.
