Secretary of Transportation Duffy issued an order, says federal transportation grants aren’t for “purely local” projects, and grants should go to communities with high marriage/birth rates (specifically includes CIG, which funds LA Metro rail projects). https://t.co/a9ofbvaCiw

Devastating news. Helen was fierce and sassy and full of energy and hilarious- it’s unimaginable that she’s no longer here. She touched so many of us even though we didn’t know her real name, or see her face. Her personality came through in droves. Her videos on her bike ../1

Let’s talk about Direct File. It’s a free, easy way for people to file their taxes directly online with IRS. You keep your tax refund — rather than paying $150 to a sleazy tax prep company. It’s more efficient! But these Republicans want you to keep wasting money on TurboTax.

No votes to LA residents: “You’ll rent a loud arterial apartment or buy a 1 mil+ SFH on a side street and like it” Memorize the names next to the No votes - these are the people *literally* responsible for your continued unaffordable cost of housing until the next RNHA cycle.

CA leg needs to run this kind of analysis every time they pass a housing law. ⤵️ It’s one thing to take 2 steps forward, 1 back, but if they’re taking 2 back for every 1 forward…

So if I want to turn 3 2-bed units into 10 2-bed units: - 3 will need to be deed restricted affordable (1.258m reduction in value) and - I'll need to pay $241,674 in relocation fees.

I am of the controversial opinion that it should focus on solving CA’s challenges—from cost of housing, to homelessness, finishing CAHSR, & attracting both residents & businesses to our cities. Enough theatrics. Best counter to Trump is to make CA a paragon of good governance.

LA Metro presentation on experience with tunneling over the years. Initial issues with B Line construction: tar leakage, sinkholes, fire, taxpayer revolt. Recent tunnels need to deal with methane zones, ice-age fossils, oil wells, building foundations, robbery tunnels, etc.

June 2024 presentation on tunnel anomalies LA Metro’s D Line Extension Section 1. They used magnetometer to “see” 7 feet ahead of tunneling machines, steered machines to avoid a likely abandoned oil well, and needed to hand mine and remove steel beams at San Vicente/Wilshire.

Manufactured scarcity, esp in regard to housing, is a losing play. Instead, Dems should put our values into practice via an abundance agenda: build the housing & transit & do the hard work of getting back to the kitchen table & focus on noticeably improving people’s lives.

Prosperity and abundance agenda. We have focused on saving people money through three income tax rate reductions (two at the ballot box and one through the leg: 4.63%>4.5%>4.4%>4.25%), cutting property taxes, free preschool and kindergarten for every child, eliminating sales tax

Our cost to build: ~$350k/unit Affordable housing project next block: $725k/unit And ours includes paying for land while theirs doesn't. If the government actually cares about building more and affordable housing, they need to radically change how it happens...

Someone needs to do a legal challenge against fees that are a percentage of project value. These fees should reflect the actual costs to review the project

Ever wonder why housing is so expensive? Our plan check fee doesn't actually cover the cost if plan check. Each dept has their own fee added on top. For instance, LAFD charges 0.111% of the entire project valuation to review plans. For us, that's ~$11,000.

This is what happens when we can’t build housing. NIMBYs are killing the future of our party. Democrats need to learn how to build shit again. We need to massively cut the red tape that prevents us from building mixed use, transit oriented development cheap and quickly.
