As anyone following me may have figured I'm now in treatment for a serious health problem. This has meant standing back from work at LSE. My colleagues are kindly organising a celebration for me on March 2nd: . Do share. Do keep in touch (email is good)
Dear academics, please try not to tweet about (World) university rankings. Such things are divisive and reductive. They have much more to do with wealth than scholarship. We should all know better.
My regular opportunity to say please don't do this. League tables are divisive & agin everything universities should stand for. And, just in case my institution hadn't noticed, while you're tweeting this, most of the UK sector is on strike because of the damage being caused
📣 We've done it again! 👏👏👏 We've been ranked top in Europe – and second in the world – in social science and management!

I was only in Hong Kong for 3 days but I think it's fairly easy to spot the limitations of the IPCC's report. Moreover, was visited in London by Mr Neoh last year; fair to say I wouldn't describe it as a 'dialogue'
I agree entirely that current Met conduct appears indefensible. However, anyone thinking it is somehow completely out of character really hasn’t been following policing over the past half century or more

that if you are going to publicise this shameful grandstanding that you will, before long, publish a more thoughtful and thorough analysis of the political context of sentencing and release. I'm sure my colleagues who work in this field can help you out

"We absolutely did not want to be in a position where enforcement action was necessary. But we were placed in this position because of the overriding need to protect people’s safety."
A reminder on this day that we are colleagues, collaborators, friends, co-workers, peer reviewers, co-investigators, associates, partners and, crucially, entirely dependent on each other for all that remains positive in HE.
#REF2021
It is an absolute disgrace. The
@timeshighered

So far I’ve seen a statement from one cabinet minister condemning today’s violence in London. Silence from the government otherwise. No criticism from anyone on the front bench, least of all the PM, of the openly racist nature of the “protest”. The violence isn’t the only crime
Essay marking - always one of the least enjoyable bits of the job - just enlivened by someone being highly critical of my research (and I taught the course). Good for them I thought.
What this young man did was disgusting. And his statement speaks volumes. No doubt an unpopular view, but I can't help but feel there is a better way of dealing with him than imprisonment. There are a variety of forms of community service he could take on
Football fan Andrew Banks jailed for 14 days for urinating by the memorial to murdered PC Keith Palmer.
Banks said he didn't know what the memorial was for, he had drunk 16 pints on an all-night bender before protests & had attended to "defend statues" but wasn't sure which ones
My annual opportunity to ask my institution not to do this. The

New ‘beating crime’ initiative. The only thing that is potentially new here is the apparent lack of thought that has gone into it. Achieves nothing but headlines and unintended consequences
Have just emailed a completed first draft of a book MS for a couple of folk to look over. Would be nice to feel a sense of accomplishment, or even just relief. Can never shake off the sense that it's all a bit inadequate. Time for a large glass/loud music. If only there were gigs
Please, please stop. There are many reasons to value our institution (and others, who are our colleagues not competitors), but coming nth

To any of my colleagues, students, friends, who've not seen this - should you have the chance to be there for any of this event it would be lovely to see you. And thank you in advance to all those who are coming along - I appreciate it hugely

Back in treatment today so the trusty old iPod is back in service (fingers crossed). No difficulty in selecting music. It’s Bob Dylan’s 83rd birthday, so that’s the day sorted!
Up in the Lakes for a week. Reading the local paper. This week’s big crime story features a burglar convicted of “illegal possession of a butter knife in a public place”. Exactly the type of trouble that could spread ...
“The more closely people are supervised, the more they bend their energies to satisfying the supervisor instead of doing the job” (Michael Banton, 1964). He was talking about police, but applies equally to universities
.MaryNewburn1 was an absolute tower of strength, general fortitude & organisational inspiration for this event. And as ever, a wonderful speaker. I’ve insufficient words to capture all she’s been and done in the past three months or so, less still our nearly 4 decades together ❤️

I am obviously aware that two prisoners were involved - the attacker and a second who tried to prevent it.
China passes new security law for Hong Kong which will criminalise secession, subversion and collusion with foreign forces, and will also effectively curtail protests and freedom of speech. A sad, sad day for Hong Kong and for democracy
Academic freedom is no justification for silencing, harassing & discriminating against GC academics, yet that is what I told at The Open University.
The latest case update provides new details of the legal questions. And, I need your help again.
Treatment day again today, so it’s back to the old faithful iPod. Given the reading matter (the other book is David Graeber) it has to be Screaming Trees/Mark Lanegan all the way. Should be a good day
Treatment day today, so am reliant on an aged iPod (but it has loads of stuff on it). The plan for the morning includes Dr John Cooper Clarke, War on Drugs, and Aswad. As for the afternoon, who knows..
Any criminology students looking for a chance to practice what they've learned about stats/methods/media/politics of crime, these tweets would be a good place to start
The great danger of today’s Cummings defence is that it risks the hard won new social order that’s been created. That order relies on co-operation & collective endeavour, as well as great sacrifices by many. Undermining it, if that’s the consequence, will have huge social costs
Criminology folk, I've had this reply to my criticism of 'top 20' type lists. My view, in brief: there's too much treating universities/academics as if they are/should be in competition; it's not a peer-index; & 'it gets to' me because, at heart, it's parasitic not productive
@TimNewburn
Tim - it’s a kind of a peer-index. I do not quite understand why it gets to you so much
It’s valuable to surface relevant content from people who want to get up to date on this topic
Have you looked at the feed it can generate on criminology and how you can filter with keywords
I like this, but I think there may be a bigger and better way to save wasting academic labour - why not abandon the whole idea? Precious little evidence that any of this is doing anything other than undermining universities and academic quality of life
Reflections of a REF Coordinator: Having spent the week urging some colleagues to read/rate the work of other colleagues, I’m led to ask - why don’t we run a REF where academics not universities select their best work? That would eliminate this monstrous waste of academic labour
Here we go again (not just my institution this time, but my Dept). PLEASE DON'T DO THIS. Rankings are invidious, divisive & destructive. Look at the strikes now to see the impact. Irrespective of rankings, universities the world over have wonderful staff & wonderful students
We're delighted to be ranked third in the world in the QS World University Subject Rankings 2020!
Thank you to all our wonderful staff and students who have helped make this possible! 👏

President Trump currently being torn to shreds on CNN live (including by Rick Santorum). This is quite extraordinary to watch. Everyone wondered if and when the tide would turn. It seems it has.
My timeline is full of good folk offering advice that the PM's promises on police numbers, prisons, stop & search is not founded on empirical evidence. Fascinating, but rather missing the point. It is entirely about political positioning not penal policy
Yesterday we returned 14 dangerous Foreign National Offenders, who broke our rules & abused our values, to Lithuania. Our efforts to return those who arrived via illegally-facilitated routes were frustrated by legal claims. Our asylum system is broken but we're making it fairer.
Gosh, how incredibly shocking. From his work on prostitution, (left) realism, and back to the recent Islington Crime Survey (), Roger was never less than a thoughtful, adventurous scholar
My dear friend and colleague Roger Matthews died of coronavirus yesterday. A world renowned criminologist, Roger was one of the very few male academics that considered prostitution to be abuse. RIP Roger:
The pandemic is scary enough for those of us fortunate enough to be in our own homes. I cannot begin to think what it must be like for prisoners and for prison officers. Ghastly, and action on this seems ... slow
Time for some of the folk proposing this to dust down their copies of Lord Scarman's 1981 Brixton report (or, more likely it seems, read it for the first time)
1/ I was de-platformed by a research methods seminar after speaking out about proposed guidance on the sex question on the 2021 Census which suggests respondents can answer in terms of their identity where this clashes with their sex.

Apart from the fact that he's not smiling here, this is how I remember Vincenzo. A deeply serious man with a wicked sense of humour. An original. Always working on something new. Always keen to discuss/argue. All the better if a glass of wine was available. Top man.

Vincenzo has been a central figure within the European Group for many years, sharing critical thinking and supporting EG colleagues.
Deepest condolences to his family.

Absolutely crackers. The sector is out of control. Standing assumption now seems to be that faculty (a) will cram research into evenings and weekends, and (b) will have no life outside work. And increasing nos won't even have proper contract.
