Feel lucky to have Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister at this time. Her decency stands in opposition to a UK government of right wing zealots who are fine with xenophobia, poverty, corruption, nuclear weapons, smearing decent people. That's what this came down to... big win.
We're enjoying Pulp's Different Class with
#timstwitterlisteningparty
. This is after their first Glasgow show, 1992/3. Katrina's old flat, hot chocolate and whisky. They were amazing. The pic is by Mark Webber who introduced us.

Terry Hall, such sad news. Thanks for the songs and for singing them the way you did. And thanks for the time you came by Monorail sent there by your son. I think I told you I was a fan, I hope I did.
This is Oslo’s new PUBLIC LIBRARY. It’s unbelievable. Completely free, open to everyone until 10pm every day. There is a wine bar. Views to die for. All the books.
Would it be really childish to say a big fuck you to Lord Frost and your crappy Brexit and your big red face and that awful suit you always wore in a photocall after a big negotiation? It doesn’t fit. You’re so Little England you xenophobic twat, you look exactly like Brexit is.
A week's a long time in pop music. This time last week we were riding high at number 1, cracking open champagne, feeling like playas. This week...

Mike Nesmith - best bobble hats, best knowing sweet smile and then brilliant songs and that gorgeous slo-mo voice. Thanks for Different Drum - always so nice to play. Loose salute becoming something more serious x
The times
@marcrileydj
invited us on his show. None of the
@BBC6Music
shows go out from Scotland but both Marc and
@gidcoe
have always given us a very fair representation. They're both sorta honorary Scots. Solidarity.
So sad news about Tom Verlaine. I didn't quite get Television at first. I was young, my ears weren't ready. It was only later I found a way in with The Neon Boys. Almost every guitar player in The Pastels from Brian to John H loved his playing so he was always part of our group.
What did
@thesonicyouth
fans look like in the 90s? Here's Katrina, she's totally into it. So excited that all those years later we were able to make a split single with them celebrating a shared love of the New York Dolls. Thanks to
@glassmodern1
for the idea, total thrill xx
Thanks to our pals at
@subpop
for reminding us that it's 25 years since we released Illumination. They were our esteemed North American partners via the great Chris Takino and his Up! Records imprint. Here's our crew outside CaVa Sound Workshop, Glasgow. Photo by Will Bradley.
So excited to announce a split 7" with
@thesonicyouth
. Two songs in celebration of the great New York Dolls. Personality Crisis / Lonely Planet Boy. Out September 4 purple vinyl.
@glassmodern1
@LoveRecsStores
So sad about Pete Shelley. Feeling a bit teary listening to the beautiful tribute to him / Buzzcocks on
@BBCGidCoeShow
. He was kind of my hero when I was 16 and I never once felt let down. Not only great but s great gateway to Can and other musics too. Thanks Pete.
I can't usually be bothered commenting on politics here but honestly offering up tax cuts as a vote winner in this country, at this time... The Tory idea of society isn't a society at all - it's winners and losers, rich people and poor people. They're disgusting, total scum.
Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings and all their allies are completely rotten to the core. No sense of morality or public duty or empathy with all the families who've made so many sacrifices to try to stem the tide of COVID-19. Absolute contempt for them.
This is looking really grim. The SNP winning (by miles) in Scotland is the only small shaft of light. English pals, move here. Help us make something great.
This is the first time David Berman came to Glasgow in 1997. We recorded his Advice to the Graduate and our own Ship To Shore for a John Peel Session around the same time. It's coming out on 7" for

this Saturday...

So happy to say our split 7" with
@thesonicyouth
finally comes out this Friday. We both play the New York Dolls with total love. Personality Crisis and Lonely Planet Boy on purple vinyl. Cover by Annabel Wright.
@glassmodern1
Any musician, artist or filmmaker that takes part in this is all over. It’s not Hull or the Olympics, there’s nothing to celebrate. Good luck getting a few idiots to take part you arts admin scumbag.

#fuckbrexit
UK politics is utterly dispiriting. No morals, just tactics. The Tories poisoned the well years ago and everyone else has to drink from it. Why can't we even agree to call for a ceasefire in Gaza? Just once try doing the right thing instead of worrying about focus groups.
I love European football, always have. We are part of Europe despite what the UK govt may wish for. What a great tournament, what a privilege to be part of. Italy were the best team in it - by miles. Fuck brexit, fuck Boris Johnson. Tne Engish team were great but this guy...
Happy New Year. No parties but we went the distance. Played lots of our favourite records through the bells at super loud volume and into 2022. We've been out walking today. Take care pals - hope to see you soon. Stephen and Katrina xx
Feeling very proud to be Glaswegian and Scottish. What happened yesterday was amazing. Fuck hostile environments. Fuck the Tories. Let’s live better.

I try not to do many interviews, I feel there are now more interviews than records. But I think this is a good one with Marissa Patrice Leitman who is a SF / Berlin-based writer / photographer. Enjoyed it...
Here’s a list of companies that donate to the Conservative Party. It’s important to remember that we all have the power to make small changes to the way things are.
Impossible to believe. Swell Maps this Saturday play their first ever Scottish show. Not only that but my pal, and fellow Swell Maps obsessive, David Keegan from Shop Assistants is on guitar. Excellent support from The Thanes. Do you believe in art?
I know quite a few people missed this yesterday so we've decided to make Pastels Films 1984-2013 available until Wednesday at midnight. Thanks
@popmutations
and
@Dominorecordco
Thinking about Kyogo staying and Jota going I thought about Paul Sturrock. He could have played for anyone but stayed with Dundee United because he wanted to play with his mates. At the time I wanted Celtic to sign him but now I'm so glad he stayed. Hero.
On winter nights there’s not much better than listening to music with a glass of wine. Today been enjoying Tape, Tarwater, The Wake, Saint Etienne, Molly Nilsson.
Happy belated birthday to Paul McCartney. Thanks for the amazing songs, thanks for being such a normal genius. Thanks for making the world a better place. Paul McCartney forever.
We're on holiday on the Moray Firth. Playlist: Michael Garrick Trio, Basil Kirchin, Broadcast, Can, Orange Juice, The Wake. Katrina is working the barbecue like a pro and saying things like:"It's going great, Stephen".
On
@gidcoe
/
@BBC6Music
just now. Is there anyone better at connecting things up and going across the lanes? New music, old music, reggae, soul - totally majestic og words brilliance. Is this honestly about bringing more new music or is it something else?
Just been listening to an amazing
@gidcoe
hat themed show on
@BBC6M
. There is no other radio like this. Final show, current format this Thursday, 9pm. Everything that's happened since Brexit feels like more Brexit. This is when Gid had me on to talk about Slow Summits. Thanks Gid
Sending our love and hopes to everyone marching tomorrow against the absolute con that is Brexit. Democracy goes on, it doesn’t end in one final moment. If it does it’s no longer democracy. We all need to constantly review our choices and sometimes change them.
#PeoplesVoteMarch
Was hoping it might feel more cathartic when Boris Johnson's political career came to an end. As it stands it all feels a bit of an anti-climax. All the damage has been done and he'll still make millions talking bollocks to rich idiots who love him. Feel cheated he's not in jail.
This is Glasgow last night. Looking east along the Clyde towards the Gorbals. My walk to the table tennis game I play every Thursday. Have to say, I really love Glasgow. Lucky to live here. I try to document it from time to time on our Instagram.
Vote well everyone but vote anyway. Unless you're voting Tory or Reform in which case don't bother, it's next week. Believe a better tomorrow is possible, but for now let's enjoy all those brexity / culture wars cunts losing their seats. Bye bye Rees-Mogg, stiff upper lip, chap.
We were our own world but somehow we knew to invite Alan Dimmick in. He was always somewhere, always there with a trusty camera. This is part of the same shoot we used on Songs For Children. In today's
@guardian
. Great to see this, I love Alan's work.
This is my favourite ever performance on Jools Holland. No joining in and no need. Broadcast are separate, in their own space, just amazing. Always in awe of this peformance.

And here’s a weird ps. After our 1980s lineup came to an end I tbought of asking Epic to join The Pastels. Put in a phone call and it was nice and respectful but nah. This after an unsuccessful List ad. So K learnt drums and was our perfect drummer.
Big shoutout to
@PaoloNutini
for covering The Pastels at Glastonbury. And to eagle eyed pals who spotted it. Thanks everyone, especially Paolo. Looking forward to hearing it when available.

I never met Mark E Smith but I admired him, maybe fleetingly rather than obsessively. Somehow he kept his intrigue, kept his magic. Bought many Fall records at different times and loved the repetition. Thanks for the lesson, this is from my school days.
Today would have been Record Store Day. We were looking forward to this archive release being in the world. Advice To The Graduate and Ship To Shore from a 1997 Peel Session. It will come out later this year.

Agnes Varda forever. What an amazing life, what a legacy. Some of our very favourite films. So modest, so great. Teary, what a week. Painting by Annabel Wright.
Without photos, film, proper documentation, history dissolves into the soft focus of personal memory. Following on from Sam Knee’s book, A Scene In Between,

10 years ago today we announced we'd finally made a new record. We thought it audacious to do this on New Year's Day and were worried that the careful plan we'd put in place with Domino would go wrong. It really didn't. We'll be back. Wait, wait...

studied photography with John Frazer about 30 years ago. They hit it off, most people did with John. She took this beautiful photo of him. Please share...
So much to admire about Nicola Sturgeon and can’t help but feel sad that she’s stepping down. What a formidable FM, the best. And never any doubt she was a decent, inclusive person and trying her best to make a better society. Thanks Nicola.
In favour of Independence. The Tories have fucked everything that was any good about Britain, they've made a country in their own image. Selfish, privileged, xenophobic, morally lost. You can't make that disappear. Think we can live better.
The Pastels 1986. Photo: Mark Flunder. As a young man Brian was brutally funny. Best policy was usually to take it on the chin. More usefully we wrote some songs together that I'm still into. Going to be performing a couple with the Hungry Beat gang on Saturday night at the CCA.
Not sure I'll ever quite come to terms with the idea that we're an indie band but it is flattering to be included in a
@MOJOmagazine
50 Greatest list with Stereolab, Wire, Orange Juice and so many other groups we love...
Just back from the opening for the Rip It Up exhibition at
@NtlMuseumsScot
. We’re really proud to be part of this, it’s an amazing show. We made our part if it around our first album, Up For A Bit With The Pastels. If you’re in Edinburgh over the summer go and see it.
We're extremely pleased to be taking part in
@popmutations
and will be screening eight promo films made between 1984-2013. Sunday 28 June at 4.30pm (BST).
Sad news about Jean-Paul Belmondo. He was part of the change but always seemed like he'd have been a grand success in any time. He certainly wasn't one thing but no one was better at making a total shit seem kind of loveable. Thanks for the magic, you always made it look so easy.
Listening to

Really thrilled to be hosting an event in celebration of the first group I fell in love with, the amazing Buzzcocks. I will be joined by two total legends, Paul Hanley and John Maher, to discuss Paul's 16 Again book and John's epic stint with the group.
When we started, 81/82, I was a total naive kid. I wanted to learn. Years later here I am with Drew McDowall at the brilliant

. Drew was in The Poems, Orange Juice's favourite other Glasgow group. He was always an ally. Photo by Charlie Kelly.
Lovely ‘ad’
@Kelvinside1878
- last one out of public education turn out the lights. Thing is, the vast majority are stuck here, trying to make the most of it. We love the teachers who are holding it together with blunt scissors & sellotape.
Your ad sticks in the throat.
I made a write up of Paul Hanley's excellent Buzzcocks / Pete Shelley opus, Sixteen Again, for Monorail. Buzzcocks were the group for me too, the pathway to so many other things. What a treasure trove this is.

So pleased to announce a couple of shows in Berlin and Köln, two cities that we love. We won't be playing much this year so please try to make it with us when we do.
Trash by the New York Dolls just came on
@gidcoe
. What an awesome racket. I loved them so much from the first time I heard them. When we were getting our group together an important ritual was watching their OGWT appearance which Brian had on Beta :) Thanks guys!
