The abuse at Medomsley in the 60s, 70s and 80s was a monstrous perversion of justice. Young people were failed by those meant to protect them. This Government will not look away. We're taking action to protect children in custody and ensure voices are never dismissed again.

I have announced a new action plan to bear down on release errors from prisons. It includes AI-powered sentence checks, a fast-track courts hotline & a Justice Performance Board I’m chairing. There’s still a mountain to climb, but we're doing all we can to keep the public safe.

Brahim Kaddour-Cherif is back in custody. We inherited a prison system in crisis and I'm appalled at the rate of releases in error this is causing. That’s why I’ve ordered tough new release checks, launched an investigation, and started overhauling archaic prison systems.

Mistaken prisoner releases are completely unacceptable. Years of cuts have hollowed out the system, and between 2010–24 just 500 new places were added. I will leave no stone unturned to fix this and keep the public safe.
