Jeff bozos is evil. At any point you, knowing you’re the richest man in the world, takes away healthcare from workers And runs warehouses in current conditions, you are evil. That’s nothing to aspire to be
Degrees do NOT shield you from racism. Accomplishments do NOT shield you from racism. Job titles do NOT shield you from racism. Respectibility politics do NOT shield you from racism. BLACK PEOPLE shouldn't be required to be anything other than HUMAN
We invite you to celebrate and show support for
@PurdueEngineers
black students, faculty, staff and alumni and engage with their stories as we work to build a more inclusive community, together.
Today I succesfully defended my thesis proposal Neurotechnology Deisgn Features’ Impact on the Identity and Function of Reactive Astrocytes! Special thanks to my adviser, committee, mentors and lab mates who have supported me every step of the way!
I was raped at Purdue. The BME department blackmailed me for speaking on my experiences. 2 mentors who failed to mentor me although I exceeded academic milestones kicked me out of their labs & sabotaged my prelims. When students and faculty speak up, they save others from horrors
Idk who needs what PI needs to hear this but your PhD students career goals in science policy, organization, social justice and science communication address just as important as your students career goals in academia or industry. Write that down.✨
Jordan is an abuser, a manipulator and sexual harasser. He has been inappropriate with other female colleagues and is the main reason I have decided not to attend Stanford. We cannot afford more people in academia who will be abusive to their female colleagues
It's kind of embarrassing that a black man and a medical professional quickly glanced over MEDICAL RACISM
US surgeon general says Black and Latino Americans should 'step up,' avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs
Just a reminder that Megan is M A Y B E a solid 1.7 shades darker than Kate. It's not about skin color its about the association of Blackness. Send tweet.
Cops dgaf about sexual assault survivors. They will ask you the same questions over & over again by different officers trying to see if you made up a fucking story. Then after all of that they will straight up tell you to your face the prosecutor won't do anything. Fuck them all
I’m pleased to announce that I accepted a position at Case Western/ VA starting in Jan 2022. Most of my K grant docs are done, however, I’m writing 2 publications simultaneously, my thesis & am also house shopping. I can smell the finish line🏁

Right now they're expecting me to put a $1500 trip on my cards to be reimbursed...like wtf is this shit academia? Thats 3/4 of my motnhly fucking stipend
Intimate lessons I learned last week: academia as a whole protect abusers because the people with the most power don't use their voice/power/privilege to stop the abusive ones. They’re usually cowards who are too concerned with their own careers ie the backlash they might face
I just realized something. Since I'm graduating within the next 2 years, I'll legit about to be the first Black BME PhD from Michigan State. I did this with my BS at tOSU. This might sound like an accomplishment, but HOW does this keep happpening?
Oh hi! Checking in for
#BlackInGeneticsRollCall
#BlackInGenetics
! I'm a PhD candidate @ MSU studying the proteomic & genetic change in astrocytes in response to implantable probes. I'm looking at specific genes that are upregulated in neurodegenerative reactive astrocytes
Last year ON CAMPUS I got pulled over by the MSU police at 930p and got asked 1) is this your car 2) what are you doing out so late? He pulled me over bc I had my college and masters tassels hanging up in my rear view mirror I kid you not....
Many good researchers aren't good teachers and many of these 'top/prestigious' institutions only hire good researchers to bring in more money. Too many aren't even concerned with developing good pedagogy or mentoring
Problem is students are adults with bills to pay. Getting paid for 20 hrs a work when 40 is expected and many programs don’t want you to have side jobs is problematic.
In that case, they can GET PAID 20 hrs per week to work on something that also happens to be their thesis. This is a fantastic option when faculty are able to make this happen
I haven’t had children yet. I haven’t been lucky enough to end up with a partner that I can settle down with (without being abused or lied to). So if I finally have one at 38, guess what..? In finally having a child at 38.
For all my Black women, light or dark, I want you to quote RT this tweet with your favourite pic you took this year! All I want is my mentions to be filled with Black women all day today. & tomorrow.
Riddle me this: if the average american has ~400 in their savings, and a downpayment of thousands of dollars is required, then WHOOOOOOOO is buying houses?!?!?!
4.5 years of true earning potential gone because I got suckered into a toxic environment and advanced to no degree. Years that had I started in a supportive lab with a good mentor in a supportive department would be done by now. Meaning I should be a 3rd year postdoc by now
66% of engineering was a weed out course. Way too many profs weren’t good teachers or many of them just hate keep against those they felt worthy enough to be in engineering. Special thanks and shout out to ask the profs I’ve had in undergrad who were passionate about students
Has anyone else's work life balance went to hell in a hand basket since the pandemic started or am I just an unorganized being with no concept of time??
Normalize nominating the grad student who ACTUALLY does outreach and leadership for outstanding grad student award versus someone who I know doesn't do shit in the community. Yes, this is a subtweet too.
Ok guys! Buckle up because this is a BUMPY wild ride
#BlackJourneytoNeuro
My journey ironically enough started in HS. My mom was a comp sci so I always knew I could be a scientist or engineer (representation is important). I picked my HS because it had a pre-engineering program.
Pro tip: if your trainee (esp one with a very intersectional identity) is complaining about not getting paid in a consistent matter, it's not your place, as a person of power to tone police an email inquiring where their money is. Your job is to make sure they get paid..

is seeing your peers get recognized for departmental awards, awards that are less competitive, and or worth less money than the one you got but seeing *no* recognition for the one you got
I cried like a baby while I got hooded bc all I could think about was starting at another uniersity in 2014 and everything I've went through just to get *here* because now I get to do my dream job, fulfill my purpose and help save lives in the process. LET'S FUCKING GO
Hey👋🏽! My name is Ti'Air & I'm at PhD candidate @ MSU and I study reactive astrocytes foreign body response to implantable electrodes

At first it didn't bother me that there was no kind of press release about my award, but knowing that there was a email about all the NSF awards, and the departmental awards, I'm going to *push* for a press release.
Hot take: if your academic institution does nothing to protect its most vulnerable population, your rankings and prestige (which is steeped in white supremacy) don’t mean shit 🥳
Hi! I'm Ti' & I'm a BME PhD candidate

The MD PhD thing is so played. I went out with someone one who asked me what I would be if I was a doctor. I said I’m in a PhD program so I’m going to be one. And he said real one. I got up and walked out.
The kicker is I’m doing in an area he switched majors from bc he
I can’t believe I found a 1400 sqft, 3 bedroom apartment with hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and in unit laundry with a parking garage for $950 literally 9 minutes away from my soon to be desk. Guess who hit the apt Jack pot?! This girl
Six months exactly today since I became the first black graduate EVER from MSU biomedical engineering & eleven years and six days since becoming the first black BME bachelor's from Ohio state. Cheers to breaking glass ceilings 🥂 and most importantly, not being the last🧠💜
