I was told he was doomed
Javier Milei was underestimated by the polls yet again. He won the popular vote for congress by over 15 points. It was supposed to be within 5 and possibly tied. Now Argentina wil deepen free market reforms and it is hard to not see him winning re-election in 2 years. VLLC 🇦🇷

The differences in Australian vs US/EU voters concerns about immigration is a function of who Australia has been encouraging to come. Illegal immigration was stopped and welfare doesn’t pay your rent there. It will take a hard recession to change this positive attitude.
My opinion piece in the Financial Review. Why immigration was always going to fracture the Coalition base. There’s a predictable pattern to who obsesses over immigration and law-and-order: they share distinct psychological characteristics. Research shows voters who prioritise

Saw the defence companies dropping rare earth supplies as a risk factor in their financial filings as a sign.
CHINA JUST SURRENDERED. 48 HOURS. $3 TRILLION GONE. Treasury Secretary Bessent: “China is ready to make a deal.” Translation: Beijing capitulated in 48 hours. The 100% tariff dies November 1st. But China paid a price that will echo for centuries. WHAT JUST HAPPENED: October

The empire strikes back
⚡️This is a monumental development, but it’s being quietly presented, almost too quietly, which is exactly why it matters. Here’s the unfiltered truth: 1. This marks the covert merger of the U.S. banking system and crypto rails. Zelle is not just another fintech app - it’s

We are living with the consequences of WW1 today
Was World War I unavoidable? I often get this question, most recently after posting my lecture slides on “The Strange Death of Liberal Europe” a couple of days ago. The answer matters for two reasons. First, because the consequences of World War I are still with us. As I note in

The US is forcing the globe to rebalance trade with it.
History repeats (by design) Tariffs aren't a mistake, it's to collapse the balance of trade with other nations. A Dollar shortage forces nations to liquidate their foreign currency reserves, gold & US Treasuries because debt is in Dollars. An engineered global insolvency crisis

Facts are hard
I can't believe people think Trump's shot at Canada is really about a TV commercial that came out 8 days ago, when this ran yesterday. https://t.co/VKkkDUanbo

China can only increase consumption by using the Japanese post 1990 strategy of near negative economic growth. This is as good as it gets for China
1/8 Yale's Stephen Roach says China must raise the household consumption share of its GDP by ten percentage points over the next decade. In August PKU economics professor Lu Feng, said that China should raise it by 5 to 10 percentage points over the.. https://t.co/U14YxjGnjh

Is Russia looking for trouble? I assume angry Canada is.
Unconfirmed news about possible third case of European refinery of Russian oil - this time in Slovakia, facing issues following the ones in Romania and Hungary. Let’s remember the words of Mr. Bond, "once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, and three times is enemy action".
