Want to raise a better player?. ➠ Stop shouting instructions. ➠ Start creating thinkers. ➠ Let them fail, reflect, and grow. “It’s not what you do for your children, but what you teach them to do for themselves.” – Ann Landers. 👇 Read the full guest article by Kurtis:

🎤 Your job on match day?. Be a parent. That’s it. ✅ Support. ✅ Smile. ✅ Thumbs up now and then. They already have a coach. What they need is a calm, positive presence behind the touchline.

The coach wants the team to try and play out from the back. Dad wants the ball booted forward. Guess who the child listens to?. Neither. They freeze. Doubt. Second-guess. It kills confidence. And enjoyment.

Let’s flip the perspective:. You’re 10 years old. You’ve just arrived at your game. You’re buzzing. But Dad pulls you aside:. “Don’t mess up today.”.“Just get rid of the ball.”. Now you’re stressed. And confused. And distracted.

📻 Parents: stop being a live commentary. “PASS!”.“CLEAR IT!”.“YOU’RE NOT MESSI!”. Sound familiar?.Imagine trying to play while being told 3 different things from 3 different people. Let them think. Let them play.

🎯 Try goal-setting. Before the match:. Ask your child what they want to improve on. Let them choose 1–2 targets. When it’s their idea, they own it. When it’s yours, it feels like pressure.

🙋‍♂️ If your child misbehaves in training, ask, not tell:. ❓“Do you enjoy football?”.❓“Do you want to improve?”.❓“How do you think [their idol] became great?”. Get them thinking. It works better than yelling. Always.

One fix?. 📍 Focus on the relationship first. If there’s trust, calm, and connection between you and your child…. Everything else becomes easier:.● Conversations.● Corrections.● Motivation.

It starts with this truth:. You’re your child’s first coach. But many parents aren’t coaching, they’re confusing. Shouting on the sidelines. Contradicting the coach. Or simply putting too much pressure before kick-off.

📣 Let’s be honest:. Football parents have taken a lot of heat lately. Yes, some criticism is fair. But most parents want the same thing we do:. 👉 To see their child enjoy the game and get better. So what’s going wrong?.
