Excited to be joining the

Can’t wait to experience the Missoula community through the pursuit of bringing a championship to Ogren Park Allegiance Field!
In ST 2020 I’m cleaning up the cages after finishing work with the MiLB guys when Shohei walks in wanting to do his cage work.
It’s just Shohei, Ippei, & me in the cages.
Watching how he worked as I put balls on the tee gave me a perspective that changed how I coach forever.
At a showcase this fall a player’s dad asked where I coach. When I said
@FalconsBase
his response was, “Guess you gotta start somewhere.”
I was polite, but clearly it didn’t cross his mind that I love coaching JUCO & choose to do it.
Be curious, not judgmental.
So much baseball content focuses on what players “should” be doing & coaches sharing to potential employers what they’d have players doing…
Meanwhile an NFL Head Coach is deliberate in earning the attention of players rather than feeling entitled to it.
🤷♂️ Random thought.
Next stop…Scranton, PA!
Excited to jump back into the college game with
@FalconsBase
this Spring as Hitting Coach!
Thank you
@CoachMcCarry
for the opportunity to join a great program in a role that will challenge me to continuously grow while impacting players!
It had little to do with what he did & everything to do with the depth of his focus mentally. He didn’t give me the impression of just hitting balls off the tee working physically, it was as if he was working mentally even harder. Appreciative of the opportunity to experience it.
“14 Days to Stop the Spread” was nearly 2 years ago, MLB owners have locked out the players, we’ve got Russia invading the Ukraine, &
#hittingtwitter
still arguing swing up or down & tee vs no tee…uncle…🤷♂️
Can we at least agree mental skills need more attention in hitting?
Coaching & instructing aren’t interchangeable.
Instructors tell/sell the mechanics, drills, & products you “need” to avoid failure.
Coaches teach the skills, habits, & behaviors that push you to find the limits of your potential while knowing failure is still entirely possible.
Love hearing from multiple friends how great Brian Bannister’s

How can you understand a good bat path if you don’t understand pitching? It’s all angles.

One of the less frequently discussed topics of modern

is the importance of an Approach & Plan to connect the mental with the physical.
A.P.E. Process:
Approach - Set direction & timing
Plan - Set sights/eyes
Execute - Catch barrels & score runs
(1/6) Our goal with this concept is simple…funnel focus entirely to Run Creation & teach how all of the various metrics impact Run Creation.
We explained it by thinking of 1 Run as $1.00 & our goal is to make as many dollars as possible…on the scoreboard & in scholarships.
spent the fall teaching the game through the accumulation of Wealth. Run values as Dollar figures. To paint the clearest picture possible of contextual value
@TJeske_SeaDoo
was the brains behind this. Its truly valuable as a means of quantifying offensive output collectively
I might be in the minority with this but I spend more time studying successful coaches than I do the swing…talk about emotional intelligence & understanding that scoring is more important than any scheme…this clip from
@PatMcAfeeShow
is still one of my all time favorites…
Dolphins have more yards than ANY TEAM in NFL history through 5 games.
“Mission accomplished,” Mike McDaniel said. “Our whole goal this entire off-season was statistical output through five games.”
Accountability. Love me some Mike McDaniel but in baseball it seems like it’s the social norm for coaches to deflect blame towards players.
Hot take that probably won’t be popular…
In my experience, holding myself accountable & leading by example has been 🔑 to growth.
Is Bat Speed critical? Yes. It’s how you turn 95+ around with a 95+ EV.
But…
Great hitters can cover +/- 15-20 mph velo difference. Average hitters +/- 10-15 mph. Poor hitters +/- 5-10 mph.
The ability to cover those velo differences comes down to Bat Path & Timing.
With the Regular Season fully in the rear view mirror it only seems appropriate to do a

appreciation post.
The backfields aren’t glamorous but they provide an opportunity…
Not bad for an UDFA guy & a guy “who at least” got drafted…in the 32nd round…

And yes, no shame, went full send embracing life’s challenges & the growth opportunities that “Free Agent” life has provided.
Learning to hit is learning to fail. Teaching hitting is teaching another human being how to manage failure.
You can’t embrace the opportunity to be a great hitter until you accept that failure plays a central role in being a great hitter.
Let go of results & simply compete.
If we let it, failure can provide an opportunity to free us from our expectations.
Failure can tell us that all those fears we had were misplaced. The world didn't end.
That can free us up, from misguided expectations. And allow us to perform to our potential.
It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t comfortable. It wasn’t ideal.
Nothing about it resembled the life I had built living in Arizona since 2019.
Yet it’s exactly what I needed.
This Spring was one of the most rewarding & challenging growth periods of my life.

Still looking for a few arms to complete our pitching staff. If interested please DM me!
Impressed with the
@FalconsBase
hitters through 10 games collectively posting a .330/.412/.524 line.
Still a long way to go with a lot of season left & need to continue to find ways to improve daily but here are some highlights from Week 1…
The term “Bat Speed” is a buzz word. Is it important? Yes. Is there a baseline requirement? Yes.
Being on-time & accurate with the barrel is more important in my experience though.
The weight room builds bat speed. The cage is for learning to be accurate with the barrel.
Improving your bat speed doesn't improve your ability to create timing.
It doesn't even guarantee you'll have more time to wait. (Because some players who improve bat speed create a swing that takes longer to execute.)
Step 1 is timing, then learn how to do it faster.
One thing I love about the journey through baseball is the opportunity to connect with the communities the game brings you to.
Excited to get this going in a way that is affordable to hit 2+ times a week!
AFFORDABLE + NO COACHES SITTING ON BUCKETS FLIPPING UNDERHAND TOSS =🔥🦾!
Week 1 Conclusion:
@FalconsBase
has a fantastic set-up for winter hitting that makes it more about monitoring the swing volume than worrying about if guys are getting enough swings.
A pet peeve of mine is saying that a pitch “isn’t a strike” when the umpire calls it a strike because no, it’s still a strike within the context of the game.
You can’t hit a strike. You can only hit hittable pitches & if you take it the umpire calls it either a strike or a ball.
(1/16) You know the true sign of baseball being back? The mechanical breakdowns of hitters & pitchers “proving” what a coach teaches is correct combined with the private gurus making sure people know they worked with breakout Player X while skipping over struggling Player Y.
When
@CoachMcCarry
called me last January & asked me if I would like to join the staff, he undersold it.
Couldn’t be more ecstatic to be back in Scranton, PA getting started on the 2023 season!
Why Lackawanna?
This is the first team lift. These guys met 48 hours ago. 55% of the roster is brand new. They’re already all in together.
#FlaconsGonnaFlacon
Infielder Quinn Hanafin is another hitter off to a strong start posting a .480/.500/.680 line through his first 28 PAs. A pure hitter who controls the zone, has a feel for the barrel, & displays an ability to use the whole field.
What if we did a coaches clinic where coaches presented & after we have their players Zoom in with masked identities/voices like in the crime shows where the players got to share their honest thoughts & perspective? How would coaches alter behavior & presentations?
Last night was first Live ABs with
@FalconsBase
. In the moment I didn’t fully appreciate just how hard
@georgec1626
hit this ball. So I’m going to own that and properly appreciate it now.
🚀🚀🚀
Sometimes the show & go just happens organically but still have to show up ready to go because the umpire is still going to yell, “Play Ball,” and after 9 innings the scoreboard will say winner or loser.
Great effort by the guys showing adaptability & resilience.
With a new bus tire and after a back and forth affair, the Medicine Hat Mavericks roll out of Swift Current Friday night with a 10-9 win over the 57's.

Hot take…
The trend where coaches sell thoughts/cues/feels as the 🔑 to hitting (aka why you should pay them $50-100/hour for lessons) is subconsciously conditioning hitters to be selfish.
What would happen if we frame more communication through the lens of runs/winning?
“You have to get to a mode where you are solely worried about doing your job and being responsible for that with your teammates.
Anything else you get distracted and lose focus on what actually matters.”
Winning teams have players that focus on being the best for the team NOT…
Hanging new netting & optimizing the space (bigger cages so
@PitchMechanics
doesn’t complain about getting hit in the head while throwing BP) has been a much bigger project than anticipated…but dang it’s rewarding seeing it begin to take shape.
Great to be back with
@FalconsBase
&
@CoachMcCarry
for the rest of the fall! Never underestimate what’s possible from the mountains of NEPA! Will be tough to top last year’s team .983 OPS w/a 16% K% averaging 9.5 R/G & that’s the beauty of coaching…New year, new puzzle to solve!
Given
#hittingtwitter
has turned into an endless shouting match about mechanics, figured I’d share this to start a different type of discussion.
Evaluating hitters based on Run Values & Break Even Points. Maybe some teams lose more Run Value to their IZ takes than their Chase?
My 1st convo with
@drivelinebases
shortly after the 2013 season was about rhythm & timing in hitting with a version of ⬇️ in my head.
Balance starts in the set-up & is maintained throughout the swing via Timing.
Timing = When movements happen.
Rhythm = Time between movements.
Hitting is hard. It’s the blending of the physical (mechanics) & perceptual (vision/timing) that make it art as much as science. No need to make it harder by making social media a contest. Some kids & parents rely on it for info. Be positive. Set an example. Grow the game.
Very grateful to
@CoachMcCarry
,
@PitchMechanics
, & the players for the opportunity to learn & grow with
@FalconsBase

Hitting happens in the present while umpires call balls & strikes in response to the past.
You hit with your eyes. See what you can hit hard & hit it hard & then take the rest.
BBs are byproducts of taking un-hittable pitches.
Let go of results & compete in the present.

Visit The Ice Cream Shoppe & visit with the locals. Highly recommend the Banana Fudge with a fully loaded burger.
If I have one takeaway from my time around MLB hitters in the cages it’s their level of focus. It’s less about the number of swings & more about the level of focus that separates hitters. Some need to be taught to focus…others what to focus on…either way…mental skills matter.
@TJeske_SeaDoo

No better place for a player in Western PA or eastern OH to train & develop holistically.
Making a deliberate effort to incorporate more Game-Like training this Fall.
Forcing hitters to adapt to change of speeds (without relying on guessing) with pitch recognition & decision making built-into the work sets the table for some valuable cage conversations.

I used to focus on what drills, mechanics, & training methods work best.
One lesson I’ve learned?
None of it matters unless players trust us enough to trust what we ask them to do.
We’re developing human performance, not doctors writing a prescription.
One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching is seeing the small, daily improvements an athlete makes & it all starts in the weight room led by
@PitchMechanics
.
Seeing the difference in
@VenturaRanciel
from this past Spring to now though is the kind of stuff that gets me 🔥 up.
(2/2) Thank you
@GregMorrison448
for the opportunity! I encourage any player/coach who has the opportunity to experience the game abroad to give the

consideration. You’ll learn a lot about the game & yourself traveling throughout Alberta & Saskatchewan.
A very wise, anonymous man once said to me, “I want the conference attendee not the conference speaker.”
It’s not about being the smartest or loudest guy in the room. It’s the silent guy sitting in the corner that you underestimate that hangs 20+ on you.
Relatable = 🔑
Mind as well put the link here too. Go through in presentation mode. Videos are setup to play on clicks. Best if used with the Google Slides app. Hope someone finds the journey into my thought process beneficial.
Do I know sometimes I’m socially awkward? 100%. But I see too many hitters conditioned to expect & be responsive to coaching 5 swings into our relationship.
“Observe & say nothing” should meet the social expectation, not defy it, empowering hitters to just do what they do. 🤷♂️🤯
COACHES: It's ok to observe and say nothing.
Let a hitter know not to be alarmed if you don't say anything at first - you're just watching how they go about their routines and movements in order to meet them where they're at.
You can learn a lot by watching.
#GoodBatting
Being around in the fall of 2022 before leaving to join the A’s, watching them while staying in touch with
@CoachMcCarry
throughout the 2023 season, you could tell it was special.
Now being back with
@FalconsBase
the energy hits different. The bar has been raised. Bring on 2024!
As much as we study what elite players do, love listening to them talk even more.
@TheCUTCH22
with some 🔥 insight here that young players would benefit from by giving it a listen.
Remain focused on getting your pitch & not missing it. Get the runner on 1st to 3rd to score.
Everything ties back to Bat Path with Rhythm, Balance, & Timing serving as the catalysts to optimize Bat Path.
An Oppo Approach doesn’t mean going pullside can’t or won’t happen…its the thought process to maintain direction to not run out of barrel & keep the ball fair.
Not too bad for a man who immigrated to the United States with only $100 in his pocket and a dream…yet his proudest accomplishment might just be his 4 daughters earning college degrees. 🤯
The

#KP3
has been one of those players that pushes you to constantly grow with him & it’s been one of the coolest things to see with even bigger things to come.
Recently have been revisiting what I consider to be the most influential hitting book I’ve ever read.
Wanted to share a few of my favorite excerpts from Sadaharu Oh’s book, A Zen Way of Baseball.
The simplicity of Sadaharu’s perspective creates the depth of knowledge he shares.
Thank you to all the fans who came out to Athletic Park tonight to support the guys on the field!
Your support makes a difference!
It was a roller coaster of emotions but sometimes it’s just more fun that way!
What comes first, the hitter’s timing or the mechanic? Address the mechanic but keep the same timing & the mechanic breaks-down. Address the timing without addressing the mechanic…spin in circles.
There is no magic fix. It’s why the swing evolves in small increments over time.
So while I’ve continued to update & refine my personal hitting philosophy (added more Bat Path & Timing visualizations), I’m excited by this opportunity knowing that this step forward means starting a new version of this presentation from scratch.
Throwing BP to Dennis on the field…
1st Round: 5 Consecutive Homers to LF.
“Homers only count to CF or the gaps, pullside bombs in BP aren’t that cool.”
2nd Round: 5 Consecutive homers to CF.
Dude is just a ballplayer & one of those dudes you just love talking the game with.
Congrats to
@CodyFleischer13
on his commitment to
@SFA_Baseball
. A 2 year starter, a key cog in a world series run. He's got professional ability and is going to a place that can develop it with the best of them.
Always a member of the family Cody.
Growth mindset is something we talk a lot about as coaches.
So why not apply that curiosity to how we coach?
Ask hitters questions to guide them to creating their own answers. Encourage ownership.
Use curiosity to build relationships & find common visions & goals.
As I’ve gotten older I’ve been very deliberate in limiting/reducing my social media usage to really stay present and be focused on enjoying where my feet are but this life announcement definitely felt worthy of sharing with those who care…📢⬇️
While game-speed training is a staple of my coaching process, the rate of failure hasn’t always been game-like & is something I’m making a deliberate effort to prioritize.
Mental conditioning is a response to the environment & teaching failure is as important as any skill.
I told the guys if we scored 12 in both games today I’d rock the Bronson Arroyo cornrows for the next week…the way the guys competed though to pull it out in extras might deserve going all in despite only scoring 11…the 2 out bases loaded 2B by
@CodyFleischer13
makes a case. 🤷♂️
I’m not a big picture guy, but thank you
@ReporterTubb
for snapping one of my all-time favorite pictures.
Not only is it a practical example for why a lefty catcher’s mitt makes sense, but also captures my “elite” athleticism. 😂
@EddyRodriguezU
will 💯% roast the form.
Every swing adjustment should have an in-game purpose.
The game tells you how you need to improve. How it looks may get you more likes & retweets but how you produce in-game gets you paid to play baseball. Simple.
What
@chaserowe23
has built
@BattlegroundBG
is special.
IMO we are in the worst era of hitting development, the advancements in golf/pitching development do not equate to the same path for hitting. It’s evident when you see training swings for social media/metrics in BP vs asking does it play in game. Train to hit in game.
Quote of the weekend goes to
@JasonCarp33
as we crossed the Delaware River.
“George Washington crossed the Delaware one Christmas Eve, he was going to win the Revolutionary War. We’re crossing it to simply go win two baseball games. We’ve got it easy.”
Perspective. 🤷♂️
Pure electricity! Proud of you
@drewmillas22
! Most fulfilling part of this game is the relationships that are created throughout the journey & without a doubt you’ve earned it every step of the way!
Think about this in relation to hitting…
When you see plus velo do you speed yourself up in response to the velocity? Or do you focus on dancing with the pitcher by synching your rhythm up with the pitcher to create timing?
Being “late” is a byproduct of what we focus on…
“Winning over yourself rather than the opponent.”
Sadaharu Oh’s book is by far one of the best books I’ve ever read. So much of hitting is mental. Are mechanics necessary? Yes but…
A flawed swing will get beat by certain pitches…your emotions can beat you every pitch.
Ridiculously strong with plus bat speed continuing to learn how to turn raw power into game-power. Not many have the combination of bat speed & bat-to-ball ability that
@AydanMcNelly10
has.
Great teammate & the kind of guy that you want in your clubhouse.
Being stuck indoors for too many straight days can create boredom or inspire some creativity where you just go full send on making it fun.
@jujuthompson_
draining the bucket &
@QHanafin
finding a way to get bat to ball simultaneously was quite impressive.
From an individual standpoint
@CodyFleischer13
is off to a torrid start posting a .407/.515/.593 line across 33 PAs.
Middle of the order type bat with plus bat speed & plus raw power who controls the zone well. Ton of upside with the bat & defensively behind the dish.
This was really cool.
Julian is also very good at catching the ball. He’s also very good at throwing the ball. The work he’s put in & the progress he’s made in the short time I’ve been here is remarkable.
If you need a true SS there’s a good chance Julian should be your guy.
Given he’s also got 2.0 scoreless on the mound,
@purplepluto727
continues to just be a ball player who finds a way to get the job done. Through 20 PAs has 1 HR & 4 2Bs.
I’ve never met

Love how he defines process with 3 controllable inputs & defines it in a manner that scales across an entire program for coaches, hitters, & pitchers.
