🗞️ This week’s column: I can’t hide my disappointment at the way the BHA was ditched, but it is now in the past. It’s time to build bridges from the centre ground of Scottish politics and ensure we live up to the aspiration that’s in our party’s name.

When I was targeted by a group of far-right thugs in my constituency I was contacted by the then Prime Minister, Theresa May and had a meeting with the then Home Secretary, Sajid Javid - both within a couple of days. I’m just an opposition MP from the third party in parliament.…
"I may be First Minister of Scotland, but in this situation I feel powerless"
Scotland's First Minister, Humza Yousaf, tells
@KathrynSamsonC4
he feels "helpless" watching his in-laws who are trapped in Gaza.
If Civil Servants had done anything close to what Gavin Williamson and Priti Patel got sacked for they would never work for the government again. A prime example of one rule for them and another for the rest. Stinks to high heaven.
I tweeted earlier criticising
@johnmcdonnellMP
and
@EmilyThornberry
for ‘abstaining’ on a tight and crucial vote. I shouldn’t have done so. Emily was with her kid in hospital and John was himself in hospital. I didn’t know. I’m deeply sorry to both. I wish them both my very best.
Nadine Dorries really is an absurd figure. She is currently on Sky News urging us all to show thanks to Boris Johnson as though he were a medieval king and we his mere subjects.
When Liz Truss ‘stood up’ to Lavrov she got the geography of Russia and Ukraine mixed up and had to be corrected by the British ambassador. She’s a disaster as Foreign Secretary and would be worse as PM.
Tory politicians taking to social media and the airwaves to downplay Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak’s lawbreaking and lying, whilst also cynically using the blood of dead Ukrainians as a shield, is one of the most revolting episodes I’ve witnessed yet. A political and moral sewer.
I have resigned as a vice-chair of the
@APPGLGBT
following Crispin Blunt’s statement. This was the first APPG I joined as an MP and it meant a lot to me. Parliament needs a respected and robust LGBT group and Crispin can no longer provide that leadership. He should stand down.
A British cabinet minister is sharing a photograph of the leader of the opposition with someone who died in 2019 as proof of him breaking lockdown rules. This has been pointed out but still it’s there. She’s responsible counter-misinformation policy in the British government.
We are expected to believe that a curry and beers arrived for about 30 people at 10pm, and this was a break for a work meeting?
No reasonable person believes Labours story, so why do Durham police and what were they told?
The Prime Minister should halt the Brexit process and set up a judge-led inquiry to investigate disinformation and allegations of dodgy funding in the Leave campaign - it’s what both Leave and Remain voters deserve.
I see Lady Mone is in the news tonight - dearie me - and I’m reminded of this treasured moment when she was on QVC selling jewellery as the Lords debated the EU Withdrawal Bill back in 2018

Over 300 residents would be forced down these stairs - no possessions, medicines or food - and not see daylight for 27 days. The youngest was just over one month old. The oldest was 93. Seven would be executed by soldiers. Ten would die due to the conditions in the basement.
Nicola Sturgeon is the finest public servant of the devolution age. Her public service, personal resilience and commitment to Scotland is unmatched, and she has served our party unlike anyone else. She will be an enormous loss as First Minister and SNP leader. Thank you! 🏴🇪🇺
Andrew Lloyd Webber is expected to take a £20 million hit to his fortune due to the

pandemic, according to the Sunday Times Rich List - as new entry Rihanna could become its first British-based billionaire musician
Tyrannies never waste the opportunity of a crisis, which is exactly what we are seeing here. Citizens of Hong Kong have shown immense bravery in standing up for their freedom and democracy. We must be on their side. Start by scrapping the Huawei decision.
“Scots voted to stay in Europe and if the only way for us to do that is to become independent from England that may just be the way to go. And I never thought I would say that.” - Longstanding opponent of Scottish independence, Billy Connolly.
Lord, give me the confidence of a Tory MP who, on Easter Sunday, will argue the teachings of Christ with an Archbishop.
Also, the CofE have seats in the House of Lords. As part of the legislature they are by definition political.
The leaders of the Church of England should be wary about clumsily intervening into complex political issues at the best of times. To do so on Easter Sunday feels very wrong. Archbishop of York views particularly wrong headed. Claims he’s in tune with majority of the public 🙄
This is how weak Putin’s regime is. They feel threatened by an elderly survivor of the siege of Leningrad, and her courage to take a stand against one man’s imperial hubris. She is a moral giant. Putin is a war criminal.

It doesn't need repeating, but the only way to rule out a no deal brexit, the only way to rule out no brexit at all, the only way to protect our economy, our security and our Union is to back the Prime Minister's deal.
So Downing Street stands accused of breaking the law and hosting a Christmas party when they instructed us all not to do so, and the PM is cutting about on national television dressed as a police officer? Totally normal country.
Brutal
@FT
editorial:
‘The foundation of this UK government is a bunker of close allies surrounded by a lightweight, supine & largely ineffectual cabinet chosen mainly for their loyalty to Mr Johnson. Few show the gravity demanded of a secretary of state’
Testimony of Ukrainian volunteer medic, Taira Paievska before the US Congress on what she witnessed in Mariupol when she was captured by Russian forces. The last line is haunting.
As we debate an election here in parliament, it’s important to remember that millions around the world are still fighting for what we can take for granted.
The decision to ban
@joshuawongcf
from elections in Hong Kong is truly disgraceful

A new parliamentary habit seems to be forming, whereby any time an SNP MP sat behind Dennis Skinner verbalises any frustration about what Jeremy Corbyn says, he angrily turns round to tell us off. He has just turned round and called me a ‘piece of shit’. He has become a thug.
Is walking out of parliament in protest normal? No. But neither is re-writing the constitution after a 15 minute government speech and expecting us all to carry on as normal without so much as batting an eye-lid.
A must read interview.
@nathanlawkc
, son of a builder and street cleaner, has shown immense bravery in defending democracy in Hong Kong. Not even 30, he’s been elected, imprisoned and has now fled his beloved city to tell the story to the world.
I wouldn’t mind ScotGov pursuing a different vaccination strategy to the rest of the UK, provided that strategy vaccinated FASTER and BETTER.
How can we justify less than a quarter of the over 80s in Scotland getting a jag compared to England? It’s scandalous.
Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee, and former Attorney General, Dominic Grieve says that
@10DowningStreet
is lying about why it hasn’t yet published a report on Russian interference in the UK.
What is
@BorisJohnson
hiding from the public?
Wow. Extraordinary interview with Conservative MP Dominic Grieve on report Boris Johnson has blocked on Russian interference. ‘What Number 10 has said is not true. It’s a lie’
As leader of the third party
@IanBlackfordMP
is entitled to no time limit on his opening speech. A Tory MP has just approached the Speaker’s chair to ask that he intervene to curtail his speech. He has declined to do so and sent her back to her seat.
Thanks to those who have got in touch with kind messages - my staff and I are fine. Thanks must go to
@policescotland
officers for their professionalism and also
@glasgowlife
staff at Pollokshaws Library. I’ll keep doing my job on behalf of Southsiders.
Remember we stood on our doorsteps & clapped for NHS staff during the pandemic? We did so for everyone - all nationalities - who put their shoulder to the wheel in our time of need. This grubby dog-whistling for votes is an affront to that spirit of thanks
If Scotland had voted Yes in 2014 we would shortly be sending our first group of MEPs to represent us in Europe. Instead we are expected to know our place as spectators in this Tory psychodrama. We deserve better.
If Jackson Carlaw can’t bring himself to say *anything at all* on the Cummings affair whilst in opposition, it gives you an idea of what he’d be like in government: Constantly looking over his shoulder to Downing Street, supinely waiting instruction. We ditched that look in 2007.
I asked the Prime Minister in a written parliamentary question if she planned to set up a judge led inquiry to investigate alleged fraud in the EU referendum. She doesn’t want to be the one to answer that question and has shuffled it over to the Cabinet Office instead.
This is a mind-blowing story. A now pro-Brexit Russian arms dealer with links to the FSB says he was part of efforts to oust Theresa May along with MPs in the ERG. He’s given £1million to the Conservative Party and donates to some of its MPs. Boris Johnson is his close ally.
As the Conservative Party chooses its next leader and the UK’s next prime minister,
@specialreports
reveals the private views of an influential figure over British politics: former Russian tycoon Alexander Temerko. Read the full report:
How disgraceful that Disney would willingly film in the shadow of internment camps, forced labour and a genocide against Muslim minorities. To then thank the state security agencies responsible for this oppression in the film credits is truly revolting.
‘Hong Kong, the only enclave of freedom in China, is being eclipsed by tear gas, rubber bullets, live rounds, police brutality and torture; but still Hongkongers march on.’
My piece for the Hong Kong Free Press
@HongKongFP
This year I lost my brother Malcolm to drugs. His death, like all 1264 drugs deaths last year, was preventable. The failure lies with us politicians. Yes we need powers in Scotland to change drugs laws, but we must do better now - more will die if we don’t
The Prime Minister needs removing from office at the earliest opportunity. It's time the Liberal Democrats, independents and others get real: back a vote of no-confidence so that he can be replaced, an extension secured and an election delivered.
Philip Hammond, ex-Chancellor, seriously suggests in today’s Times that one reason the Prime Minister may want a hard Brexit is so that his backers in the City don’t lose billions — corruption on a scale I wouldn’t dare put in fiction
Before the counting is done BBC and STV finish broadcasting. Unthinkable in a general election - it just wouldn’t happen - Scotland deserves better broadcasting of our elections.
Really outrageous coverage from BBC Scotland, who covered every twist and turn of Hartlepool but cut off before the most marginal seat in Scotland declared. Poor stuff
@BBCScotlandNews
It’s simply unacceptable for Ruth Davidson to take a salary of £50,000 from a big city lobbying firm whilst sitting as a constituency MSP. The public will always wonder whose bidding she’s really doing. She must forfeit one of them...
So I meant to text my partner asking him if he’d like me to make a pot of soup for tonight and instead I accidentally sent it to the SNP MP WhatsApp group. My colleagues are now texting me soup orders...
Just seen a tweet calling for me to be hung outside of Parliament. Later today I’ll be going to a local school to talk about the role of an MP and the state of democracy. How on earth do you encourage people to get involved in politics when this stuff is swirling around?
You disgrace yourself,
@PennyMordaunt
. My brother died of a drug overdose at his home. If he had access to a healthcare facility such as a safe consumption room - somewhere ‘safe and warm’ as you put it - in order to manage his addiction then he might well still be alive today.
Douglas Ross is ignorant of his facts. The war in Ukraine started in 2014. The Conservative Party has had 3 Prime Ministers since it started. This ignorant and cheap attempt to use it to shield the PM from his lies and lawbreaking should be retired swiftly.
Russia illegally occupies its neighbour and fuels a war in the east of Ukraine. It shot down a civilian passenger plane that killed 298 innocent people. It carried out a chemical weapons attack in the UK. It’s for Russia to change its approach, not us.
It was a Labour council - a Labour council - who designed a policy to pay women less than men in Glasgow, and then fought those women in court so as to keep paying them less than men.
It was
@theSNP
’s
@SusaninLangside
who fixed it and paid them what they were owed.
Never forget
It’s also only fair of me to say that it was a Tory MP - my friend
@Simon4NDorset
- who set up the meeting with Sajid Javid. It was a horrendous experience for me and my staff, and I felt that senior ministers understood the gravity.
My nephew knew from a young age that his uncle was gay and *shock horror* lived with another man. He’s in S1 at
@ShawlandsAcad
and when someone called him gay at school he replied ‘I don’t know why you think that’s an insult’. Young ppl more sophisticated than we give credit for.
Imagine for a moment that the party was at Bute House. We could probably power Luxembourg for a month with the outrage from the Scottish Tories alone.
#downingstreetparty
Young people - as is so often the case - have been at the forefront of defending democracy, freedom and citizens’ rights in Hong Kong. It’s vital that the international community doesn’t abandon them as they stand up to a mighty, repressive regime.
This deserves to be shared widely.
@NicolaSturgeon
debating EU membership with the then Scottish Secretary, Alistair Carmichael, during the 2014 independence referendum campaign.
Spoiler: She turned out to be right.
Joshua Wong was arrested because he’s standing up for democratic values against a violent dictatorship that can’t handle freedom loving citizens. He must be released.

A Tory MP has told us we need to stop freedom of movement in order to counter extremism. Freedom of movement - the greatest diplomatic achievement in European history - was designed to keep the extremism that built the Berlin Wall in the past. Honestly, read a book.
“We will not leave our children with a boiling planet”
Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson says her party is “the only party with a radical and credible plan to tackle the climate emergency”
Over 20 years of devolution and almost two years into a global pandemic, and I'm still amazed at how many people don't know what is and is not the responsibility of the Scottish and UK Parliaments.
Douglas Ross is currently on
@SkyNews
using the war in Ukraine for domestic political purposes. That’s the opposite of what we all agreed was decent and right. It’s revolting.
Spoken with a friend in Ukraine I’m trying to help. They want to come to the UK but have no family here, only friends - he lived and worked in the UK some years ago. Home Office rules prevent them from coming via the current refugee scheme. We need to fix this
@pritipatel

It’s funny how the world works, but it was amazing to meet Gordon and thank him for what he did for me - despite not knowing it. He’s a truly special person who I felt like I’d known my entire life 🏳️🌈❤️
I see the Scotland in Union campaign are putting out leaflets saying Scotland wouldn’t get into the EU, whilst in the same leaflet saying we would be forced to join the Euro.
Not very bright, these people.
It was a pleasure to meet with
@nathanlawkc
yesterday to discuss Hong Kong and how we can best support those championing democracy and freedom. Nathan and his friends back in Hong Kong have shown immense bravery and deserve our support and solidarity.
🏴We won 80% of Scotland’s seats at WM less than 12 weeks ago.
🏴The FM has won every national election since becoming SNP leader
🏴Polling for independence is higher than its ever been and is growing.
If a man had these achievements under his belt they’d be singing his name.
An enormous thank you to the council staff for this heroic effort. They’re too often having to clear up after the thuggery, vandalism and violence that Glaswegians are being made to suffer following a ‘celebration’. What happened last night was utterly shameful.
