Jo Swinson should make a bold public offer to Jeremy Corbyn - Lib Dems will stand aside in 25 Con-Lab marginals, if Labour do the same in Con-LD seats. Here's the obvious ones.
Remainers in South West England & Gibraltar - current independent polling suggest
@LibDems
need just 2% more votes to win a second seat, at the expense of the Brexit Party. Vote wisely on Thursday!
The chair of the Labour Party has just told
@EvanHD
on
#PM
that they will hold a one day party conference *after* the election to decide if they back Remain or a (mythical) Labour Brexit. So on just day one of
#GE19
it's clear Remainers can't trust Labour.
WTF is going on at
#Newsnight
asking
@LibDems
Tom Brake about why Jo Swinson isn't breaking through, in the spin room of
#BBCDebate
from which the BBC had excluded her. The BBC is propping up the two party pantomime.
Homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice or even an informed decision, it is part of the innate character of a person. Religion is a choice. The "debate" should be about the place of religion in schools, not LGB inclusive relationships education.
#BBCPanorama
NEW: We conducted a telephone method constituency poll on behalf of the Liberal Democrats in Esher and Walton (Dominic Raab). Results have now been published and so under
@BritPollingCncl
rules we are releasing the results and tables.
Get the data:
The real big story of local elections 2024 is that the Liberal Democrats have won more council seats than the Tories. It would be nice if the media now gave us the coverage that result deserves.
For just 43p a day I watch, listen or read many of these BBC services. I also watch Welsh language programmes via the iplayer. Don’t let the Tories ruin this national treasure.
Tomorrow the
@LibDems
will announce a new leader. Today let's thank
@vincecable
for reviving British Liberalism
👏🏿 over 700 councillor gains in 2019
🍾 16 MEPs
🍰 Ahead of Labour & Tories in polls
Boris Johnson is to announce the return of imperial weights and measures, making it legal for market stalls, shops and supermarkets to sell their goods using only Britain’s traditional weighing system post-Brexit
Absolutely delighted to be returning to the council after a 25 year gap! Caroline, Nick and I flipped a three member Tory ward. We are enormously grateful to the residents of Westbury on Trym and Henleaze and will work hard for them and contribute to the running of the city.
The
@LibDems
surge - now safely past the Tories and poised to overtake Labour. We know Leavers are congregating around Farage's Brexjt Party. Remainers now gathering around Liberal Democrat banner.
I’ve won and lost elections and know politics isn’t fair and often a cruel business. But I put everything I had into Hotwells and Harbourside and ran a positive campaign. So losing by just 26 votes (537 Grn to 511 LD) is pretty gutting. A break from Twitter for me now.
Happy 35th birthday to
@LibDems
founded this day 1988 with a merger of the Liberal Party and the SDP. The party has elected 118 MPs and thousands of councillors. My picture shows the Commons parliamentary party just before the 2015 meltdown.
Congratulations to Dan Norris
@votedannorris
on being elected West of England Mayor. Though we have been rivals for the post I know that he has the right mix of local and national political skills and knowledge to make a success of the role and wish him well.
More good news for
@LibDems
as we gain two seats on Forest of Dean council. Congrats to new Cllrs Gill Moseley and Vilnis Vesma. They end the LD drought there and the party now has Cllrs on every West region council. Pleased to have helped.
Another former Labour MP now backing the
@LibDems
as the best pro Remain party. Bob Marshall-Andrews is a fellow Bristol Uni graduate so I'm delighted that we've been able to share his letter with thousands of Bristol residents today. Remainers unite!
Some car drivers are disgusting horrible people. Just got knocked down outside my house by a car which stopped briefly then sped off before I could photograph its number plate. Badly bruised legs but not broken, luckily. How can someone be so vile?
Excited to announce that I've been selected to be the
@libdems
candidate for mayor of the West of England. Our region deserves stronger leadership, clearer vision and greater ambition to realise its potential than shown by the Conservative incumbent. (1/4)
The Colston statue should have been removed years ago and put in Bristol's MShed museum with the displays on slavery. Perhaps it's all the more poignant that he goes there now in a battered and tarnished state.
I'm really having to pinch myself in this election - the canvass results for
@LibDems
are so positive. Another great night in Bristol West, this time in Redland.
The "two main parties" in the Euro elections were the Brexit Party and the
@LibDems
So are you a nationalist or a liberal? If you're one of us and want to be part of the liberal resurgence, join us -
Delighted that Liberal Democrat conference has voted for an ambitious plan for building 380,000 new homes a year, with 150,000 of them at a social rent, all built to sustainable high standards. Liberals can be the credible party on housing, giving hope to young people.
#ldconf
I've met lots of usual Labour supporters who are thinking of voting
@LibDems
in
#EuroElections2019
Here's our manifesto, clear on stopping Brexit and also on the sort of EU we want to build together.
Just been on
@GMB
saying every vote for the
@LibDems
is a vote to stop Brexit. The UKIP candidate on with me deserved the hard time the presenters gave him for racist & homophobic views of some of their candidates. Antidote to extremism is liberalism.
Amazing reception from residents in Baschurch
#northshropshirebyelection
Lots of lifelong Conservative voters telling me that they won’t vote for Johnson’s man from Birmingham and praising Helen Morgan’s positive and high impact campaign
@helenhalcrow
Remainers are now flocking to the
@LibDems
as the strongest and most credible Remain party. In the South West & Gibraltar we are the obvious choice for those who want to remain in the EU and give it a liberal outlook.
Fabulous day in the Devon sunshine calling on voters for
@RichardFoordLD
who has great support to be the new MP for Tiverton and Honiton. And fab to meet up with old friends
@DavidWatsonLD
and
@LizBarkerLords
Unless you were a gay man wanting to express your love, a woman needing an abortion or escape from an unhappy marriage, a poor family wanting a mortgage, anyone wanting to watch a play without censorship…etc. Silly Steven.
Liberal Democrats defend the right to protest and call for an inquiry into the police handling of this week's violent events in Bristol. Joint statement by Heather Shearer, Caroline Gooch and myself. 👇
Political news klaxon 🎺🎺 Excited to be standing in a by election for Hotwells and Harbourside. This is an area I know inside out, having represented it three times as a councillor and for two terms as its MP. 🧵
Well done
@EdwardJDavey
for calling out Boris Johnson's racist, homophobic and anti-Islam remarks. We are a divided country on Brexit and BoJo is incapable of healing and bringing us together.
#BBCQT
Excited to announce I'll be standing for election to Bristol City Council in May. It will be in the city centre ward covering Hotwells & Harbourside, the area where I was first elected back in 1993. Thanks to my friend cllr Mark Wright for 15 years of service.
Another team from Bristol, with a friend from North Shropshire, off to meet voters in Oswestry for local Liberal Democrat candidate
@helenhalcrow
the best choice to beat the discredited Conservatives.
Delighted to welcome Cllr Tony Carey to
@BristolLibDems
- elected as the Conservative councillor for Brislington East he no longer feels comfortable in a party led by Boris Johnson. This follows Cllr Sultan Khan's defection from Labour last month.
The
@LibDems
are winning again
🍾 Defeating Tories in Brecon & Radnor by election
🍰 Best ever Euro election results
🍾 Largest number of local councillor gains
Let's upend Brexit together - join us
Labour representative on
#Marr
swerving all over the place to avoid committing to another referendum. Seems they're still preferring a Labour Brexit to a Tory Brexit. There's no such thing as a good Brexit, to stop it vote
@LibDems
!
Voting is now over in the Hotwells and Harbourside by election. Whatever happens in a couple of hours I am proud of the positive campaign I’ve fought, focused on the many local issues that matter to residents. I’m also lucky to have had a fabulous team of local volunteers.
This picture will be remember as Brexit in a nutshell: privileged, pushed to the extreme by those in positions of powers, too bored or tired to even listen to the information being given to them, all knowing the outcome will have absolutely no affect on their silver spoon life.
It's official now! Signed my candidate form to be one of team
@LibDems
South West for the European Parliament elections. Hope all Remainers give strong backing to Britain's most consistent pro EU party.
The
@libdems
leadership ballot has closed, result tomorrow. I've been a member under the 2 Davids, Bob, Paddy, Charles, Ming, Nick, Tim, Vince and Jo. I've supported Ed this time but many good friends have supported Layla. Whoever wins, let's unite behind them.
Former Conservative MP for Stroud backs the Liberal Democrats. Johnson is driving out all the moderate, pro Remain members of his party. His Tory party is the most extreme of our lifetimes. They must be stopped.
Sooner or later, most people will realise Brexit in any form is bad news for the UK. This is why I am supporting the Liberal Democrats - we must do all we can to fight Brexit.
Fabulous to have
@EdwardJDavey
acting leader of
@LibDems
with us in Bristol today supporting
@taramurrayLD
our candidate in Thursday's by election in Brislington East. Let's win this!
John McDonnell refuses to back tactical voting. He tells
#Peston
that people should always vote Labour. If the likes of Raab and Redwood are re-elected as Tory MPs (when Lib Dems could have unseated them) please remember this mad Labour selfish tribalism.
Team Bristol and South Gloucestershire about to deliver a big chunk of Market Drayton for
@helenhalcrow
the local Liberal Democrat challenger to the Tory from Birmingham in the North Shropshire by election.
Excellent day out campaigning for
@SarahDykeLD
to be next MP for Somerton and Frome. Canvassed one of my favourite villages, lots of support for Sarah and of course we went in The George, one of England’s oldest pubs.
Normal post election routines underway: deep clean of the house, clearing out the layers of leaflet archaeology from my car and watching the world snooker final. Difference this year is that I’m doing it all in a happy state of mind 😀
Truss insults Macron, a key ally of Britain. She’s behaving like a marginal Tory blogger, not the current Foreign Secretary on the brink of becoming Prime Minister. I guess being boorish about the French plays well with Tory members.
Eighteen years since my late friend Charles Kennedy spoke against the Iraq war. We were the only major party united in opposition. Later as an MP I voted for an Enquiry into the disastrous consequences of the war. It was blocked by Labour MPs.
Last night's Sunbury Common and Ashford Common (Surrey) council by-election result:
LDEM 35.9% (+17.1)
CON 35.2% (-11.4)
LAB 18.7% (+2.6)
REF: 7.0% (+2.5)
TUSC: 3.1% (+3.1)
Liberal Democrat GAIN from Conservative.
Voting is underway in the Hotwells & Harbourside by election. I’ve enjoyed hugely my walks and boat rides (!) around the ward, meeting over a thousand residents. Today I hope they elect me as their new community champion at City Hall.
Clear from Labour's Rebecca Long-Bailey on
#radio4today
that she wants a "good Brexit deal." Labour just want a Brexit that is different to the Tory version. If you want to stop Brexit, the
@LibDems
are with you.
Solid performance by
@joswinson
in her encounter with
@afneil
- the best political tv interviewer we have. Corbyn was monstered last week and it looks as though Johnson is too cowardly to appear.
#theandrewneilinterviews
#GE2019
Absolutely delighted that
@heidiallen75
has joined the
@LibDems
That's now 7 defectors from other parties in the last few months plus a by election gain. Remainers, liberals and social democrats are all welcome!
It's amazing to see so many people joining the
@LibDems
following our success in the local and Euro elections. If you join before Friday night you get a vote to decide whether
@joswinson
or
@EdwardJDavey
becomes our new leader.
Just heard the Chancellor promise on BBC news that there would be plenty of things in the shops for people to buy for Christmas. Doubt that any peacetime Chancellor has ever felt the need to make such an assurance.
Delighted to have been confirmed by full council as the first chair of Bristol’s new Public Health & Communities Committee. I look forward to working with colleagues on making Bristol a healthier and socially cohesive city 1/3
Time for all Remainers to abandon Labour, which must now be considered a fourth Brexit party. The
@LibDems
are the strongest hard Remain party, poised for big gains in tomorrow's local elections.
Looking forward to being joined by fellow
@LibDems
candidates in Bristol this morning for the launch of our South West
#EuroElections2019
campaign. We are the largest and most credible pro Remain party in the region.
Rather fed up with the BBC saying the not yet announced EU deal will set our trade "for generations" My generation and those younger intend to rejoin the EU as soon as possible.
This news makes me very sad and tearful. So many memories. At a time when liberalism was on the floor he picked it up, marshalled its forces, gave orders and sent us into battle with so many victories as a result. God help the Angels...
How it started, how it’s going. In 1993 I was the Bristol councillor baby…returning now in 2024 I’m definitely not daddy cllr, maybe elder statesman? 😀
Squirting more money into the housing market will stoke demand and drive up prices. It’s the supply side that needs boosting in a seriously unbalanced market. Government should build more homes, not send more money chasing homes already built.
SNP look set to lose seats to both Labour and the Liberal Democrats. The media are focusing on how this helps Labour get a Westminster majority but an SNP collapse would also return the Lib Dems to third party status, with all the Commons advantages that come with that status.
Huge 13% swing from Labour to
@LibDems
in Bristol Euro elections. We were 5th in 2014 with 9.8% of the vote, now 2nd with 22.4%. A brilliant result in the shortest campaign I've ever fought!
Well that's the first time I've smiled during evening news coverage of elections for about 9 years 😀Huge gains for
@LibDems
in the South West and many other parts of England!
It's an exciting time to be a Liberal Democrat again. New MEPs,
@ChukaUmunna
joining us and soon a new leader. So I've registered to go to
@LibDems
conference for the first time since 2015. Will be great to catch up with old friends and new.
Labour have a problem with anti-Semitism, the Tories have Islamaphobes in their ranks and Johnson calls gay people like me "tank topped bum boys." So just a reminder that we have a liberal party that has stood for religious toleration and minority rights for the last 300 years.
It’s not the first time Ukrainians have been attacked by a cruel tyrant in Moscow. In 1933 Stalin starved millions in the Holodomor, a genocidal act. It was exposed by Gareth Jones, a Welsh journalist and researcher to Lloyd George, played by James Norton in the film “Mr Jones”
