I want to apologize to an old colleague of mine. He’d just gotten married and took a 10 day honeymoon (wow!). A month later he did a weekend ski trip (oof!) and couldn’t get WiFi for a closing that got moved up 4 weeks. I filled in for him. I remember the partner saying he was

@sweatystartup Use. Tech. To. Magnify. Your. Own. Voice. Hammers are used to smash nails. No one holds the nail for you. No one swings the hammer for you. It’s a tool.

@MissEsqHire 1 - partners are obsessed with 100% when they got 80% right as associates 2 - yes, ya look fine, but there’s no strip poker in the doc dojo, breathe my guy

@ralphbrooks I use the tech for 3 buckets of stuff - 1. Diligence: To summarize n synthesize. Full stop. If I need an abstract, tech is taking the first cut. Or if I don’t understand the markup to a provision. Paste it into tech: “say what this does in plain English so I can think how to

@JDMoita Right, I have an allergy to “subject to caveats” language too - like get a grip. Everyone knows the doc is a draft. At minimum, save the legalese for later on when you’re racing at the end / disputes arise

All: There appears to be a few ‘formality mercenaries’ in the replies - those are the lawyers with poor judgment. For the avoidance of doubt, I did not blindly advocate for rude and unprofessional correspondence. Rather, I encouraged juniors to know (a) when a four (4) word

@JJ60611 The “scope creep” of a senior lawyer is unrivaled

If your lawyer can’t answer quick pings without a word salad - find a new one. The first thing I look for in a junior is judgment - do they know the difference between “here it is” vs. “please find attached”? If not, teach them. But it’s a short leash. One liners don’t need

@Empty_America It’s a knives out profession & there are serious casualties to QOL. Unlike a doctor who “heals” or “treats” - the lawyer serves. One of the only gigs where the default is subservience, yet the job is leading. Odd

@JohnLeFevre @writeclimbrun “Poor with bigger numbers” is the twit line of the day. Absolutely right. Unless you are ruthless in controlling spending / commitments of your familial circle (or your own), more income is not more money

@BustedAuction I literally just tweeted about this - the quicker rly type A ppl can get recklessly bold the better. Bc they’ll still cover both sides of the coin, diligent & dangerous. The latter is harder

Here’s some wisdom that saved my career as a midlevel lawyer. Big law was a big deal to me. I coached baseball & worked construction before law school. No lawyers in my fam - it was vision board grit. I acted like a ‘lucky to be there’ subordinate. I was crazy organized, and

@lawyer_memes All part of the ‘stealth layoff’ package Fortunately been savvy enough to avoid this, but it’s taken cognizance & spine to identify and outmaneuver law firm landmines (and lots of trial/error) Stealth layoffs (coerced exits) are tracked differently thru HR & reporting, meaning

@ccmembersonly Truth. I work those days. But recognize how corny it is to make everyone around you rich while your family asks where their little worker bee is

@resetbasis Proud I never did this. When I don’t have my steel toes on, I wear real dress shoes. COVID turned everyone into sweatpant clad “gym teacher” lawyers. Then these shoes tried to split the baby - the cool “lulu” dress/casual lawyer. Renounce it - suits & boots only

@RobertFreundLaw I actually don’t remember but know the range. Mostly blocked out everything that preceded that bar after passing the bar. LSAT harder than bar tho lowkey. 100% of the answers looked like the answer 100% of the time
