"[In New Haven,] some of the best meals lie beyond the buzzing heart of downtown and the limits of university shuttle systems. Hop on a CT Transit bus when you don’t feel like walking or biking the fairly compact, relatively flat landscape."
“A song about Reagan-era struggle became a song about 21st-century survival. When my teenage children hear “Fast Car”, they do not wonder why the narrator cannot escape poverty or why a person with a job still has to live in a shelter. Those things happen all the time.”
A friend recently told me I'd changed the way she drives after I shared with her the statistics referenced in this graphic.
Previously, she felt going 5 mph above the speed limit was no big deal. Now she knows better.
Hey folks who drive cars. Slow the F down. I know it’s easy to think you’re in your own world barreling along cranking tunes glancing at you phone. But stop it. There is a vulnerable world outside your windshield.
If beer business owners are suddenly feeling overwhelmed by the extra effort it takes to make sure they're not aligning their brands with bigots and abusers...imagine the sheer magnitude of labor marginalized industry employees have always done just to survive the workday.
A call to action for beer folks:
Fuck Founders
And
Listen to black people.
Create space for black people.
Amplify black people.
Hire black people.
Fund black people.
Promote black people.
Protect black people.
Champion black people.

So, uh, 2020 is full of surprises and
@AHCallaghan
and I buying a house in New Haven, CT is certainly one of them! It’s been a minute since we were here, so we welcome your local beer recs! 🍺✨💕
I made a GIF for that feeling when folks try to align certain beers, adjuncts, or serving styles with femininity as an insult to both the beverages and us.
We all know
#BeerSanta
is real, her name is
@libby_crider
, and her generosity knows no season.
That said, Libby really outdid herself as my

elf this year (thanks to
@16ozCanvas
for coordinating!), sending this massive box of holiday cheer! 🎁✨
Thank you, Libby ❤️
Women *regularly* get asked this question by journalists in media interviews, perspective employers in job interviews, customers at our beverage establishments, salespeople pitching us at our beverage jobs, random people who find out what we do for work...the list goes on.
Soooo I did an interview today and 30 minutes in I was asked the below question. I lost it, stopped the interview & refused to answer and I will NEVER answer this question ever again Stop asking me and other women in the whiskey industry if they “actually like whiskey” Thank You
Everything is political. Every business you participate in, every product you buy, every blog post you write, every craft beer you drink. Being a cis het white man just means that when you don't consider about how your actions affect the world, status quo still coddles you.
Let’s be clear: Ignoring black women while talking to white men is one way
@BobPease
and
@BrewersAssoc
are *directly* and ongoingly upholding white male supremacy in the craft beer industry.
If a brewery is doing an International Women's Day brew but doesn't include compensation transparency in their job postings, they don't *actually* care about gender pay gaps.
It boils down to: Beer Twitter “agrees” diversity and inclusion are important, but doesn’t like when folks openly discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the industry.
Last time I visited Hartford’s Parkville neighborhood from New Haven it was via transit/on foot. The Market entrance was a dangerous-by-design driveway with no pedestrian infrastructure—the sidewalk entrance was barred shut. Where’s the Hartford Courant article about that?
Dear craft beverage Old Gaurd: We’re tired of waiting for you to step up, share access, share success, and actually work to diversify and equalize the industry through mentorship. We have just started mentoring each other. Thank you for nothing 🙃
Like
@totalcurtis
, this job posting turns my stomach. Unlike him, my experiences in the UK and US beer cultures have never been primarily "thoughtful and progressive." Which is one reason we need folks, particularly folks of privilege and influence, to call out this bullshit.
In a beer culture I consider to be thoughtful and progressive, acts of blatant sexism and toxic masculinity like this are reductive, and make it less accessible. Shame on you for the petty jokes (in a job ad no less)
@tinyrebelbrewco
. They do more harm than you know.
TFW it's your first summer in the neighborhood and you find out there's an epic, annual, multi-week pie competition and this week the category is "savory," aka your jam 🥧👀
I will never not being angry about how women are cautioned, harassed, de-incentivized, blacklisted, and/or otherwise chased out of the beer industry. It makes me sick. It makes me stand my ground. It also makes me want to join them (again).
Beer industry covid update: White men interviewing other white men on Facebook Live is the new white men interviewing other white men on podcasts and I’m STILL tuning in to exactly none of it.
My “hot” take is that there should be no school buses—instead, school transportation resources should go to robust fare-free public transit, bike buses, and walking buses.
86% of adults say their parents walked to school, but only 10% of kids today do so. In my latest
@MercuryVirginia
story, hear how parents & educators are leading “bike buses” to give kids a healthier commute from

,

Thankful for my dear friend and former work wife who just brought me my copy of
@beerkulture
’s This Ain’t The Beer That You’re Used To AND a few bottles of Cuvée René to enjoy, at a distance, in the yard together 🍻✨💕
The first time a man shared his salary with me, our boss bullied me into quitting. That was my first lesson in how powerful these conversations are. The last time, it helped me successfully negotiate a 35% salary increase.
Real question: Has a
@BrewersAssoc
Board candidate EVER gotten so much grassroots, outspoken support as
@rachael_engel
? Also: What beer publication will be the first to write about it??
Mystic, CT is amazing and would improve with:
- Less car traffic/dedicated car space
- Connected sidewalks—including to the train station/public beach!
- Micromobility lanes—more (e)bike rentals too, please
- More trains—bring back the 11pm to NHV!
Why we win with transit!
As I wrap up my first year representing the redrawn 41st district, my constituents in Mystic have made it clear: trains, sidewalks, and bike lanes over any new parking capacity!
This lesson can be applied to any of our historic villages and communities!
The U.S. is a craft beer leader in large part because Americans are willing to mess around with perfectly lovely beers on the off chance that doing so will turn into something new and wonderful. Our irreverence for traditional styles is both our strength and our weakness.
One of the best things about living in a dense, mixed-use urban neighbourhood is that there’s a good chance everything you need or want is close by… maybe even right downstairs on your block! What’s YOUR favourite thing that you have right downstairs or within a block or two?
Say hello to Stasia Brewczynski, director of communications at
@pikebrewing
! See how she got started in the craft brewing industry, find out her most memorable travel beer destination and what's new at the brewery in her A Toast To.
Here's my hot take for the current cider discourse: One of my least favorite* beverages is modern cider. One of my favorite* beverages is heritage cider. This is my favorite** apple GIF.
*Yes, there are exceptions.
**There are no exceptions.
CEO of
@BrewersAssoc
@BobPease
invites 2 white men to *privately* discuss why BA upholds racist members. Has Bob reached out to any of the black folks and poc who’ve *been* highlighting this issue?

for using their privilege for good.)
Omg
@BeersWithAndres
' story about freaking out when his mom drain-poured a special bottle of Cigar City Café con Leche because it "looked too dark" to be beer 😂😂
DID YOU KNOW that if you ferment beets with chipotle peppers you will get delicious fermented chipotle beets but ALSO you will get a viscous purple-red smoke-salt syrup to which you can add lime and soda and drink from a wee vampire chalice?
Do folks realize how batty it is that, 8 months in, we’re still focused on keeping restaurants open during a pandemic instead of providing $ to everyone from the restaurant owner to the dishwasher so they can stay home for a few weeks & we can stop the spread?
Fifteen-year restaurant industry veteran Samantha King was a manager and trainer before joining
@pikebrewing
as Assistant General Manager of The Pike Pub two years ago. This summer, she was promoted to General Manager of Pike's seafood restaurant and oyster bar,
@tankardtun
!
It’s the SADest season, coming up on a year of pandemic, in the midst of a coup. So I’m striving to embrace the little wins — like baking an excellent Chez Panisse almond cake. I’m glad to report this cake is as easy to make as it is to savor with a strong cup of tea.
A thing I love about New Haven pizza is how it gives zero fucks and still crushes it 😂🍕❤️ Pies come sliced however the fuck they feel like. Delivery was simply Not A Thing until the pandemic. The toppings game is wild—and wildly successful!
Secret's out: Maine in the off-season means shorter lines and ideal conditions for harvesting oysters and brewing spontaneously fermented beer. Thanks to
@EaterBoston
@blumie
for letting me write about some of my favorite Portland-area spots!
This is true—vodka’s for ladies only 🍸 Actually, Jas, it’s true for ALL alcohol—including 🍺, particularly draft! Shame on you for pining after that keg 😳 Defo unbecoming for menz to drink AT ALL. Fluids are super girly, lads! Have some shame—if you MUST drink, make it soup 🥣
Something we don’t talk enough about is how for years, white women survived (mostly on the fringes of) the beer industry (while WOC were often barred altogether) and how those survival tactics were too often ugly and many of us need to make amends, then move forward doing better.
This. Transit should be reliable.
But even if (and too often it's an "if") transit's reliable, some employers discriminate against people who can't/don't drive/own a car.
Hiring managers: Don't ask about/require car ownership/a license unless it's an essential job function.
all the "just take the bus" people are reminding me of how when I was in college, I was denied a job after the interviewer asked increasingly specific questions aimed at determining if I could work without relying on our local bus system
Thinking about how many mediocre cis het white dudes still have jobs in beer while so many amazing folks have been pushed out of the industry this year.
Maybe white men highlighting breweries as safety/inclusion role models would land less terribly if any of them knew what the hell they were talking about.
In addition to notch, lamplighter, and redemption rock, I know Off Color is run by good cats. I have very good feelings about Allagash, Bissell Bros, Cambridge, Dovetail, Dogfish, Kent Falls, Hanging Hills, Schell’s.
Most of our belongings have yet to arrive, but my parents did drop off some boxes of random stuff my from my childhood, so we DO have a couple well-loved Frog & Toad books, $48.36 (!!) in crumpled bills and change, and this teeny tiny Geri Halliwell! Who could ask for more?
Many folks who have been marginalized and harmed in the beer industry no longer work in the beer industry — often (in/)directly due to the injustices they faced.
Recently, I’ve talked to a number of people who really want to let go of car ownership.
Anecdotally, the primary reasons they’d like to stop owning a car are:
-To save money
-Because they dislike driving
-Car ownership has a low return-on-investment for them
Shout out from
@BeersWithAndres
to
@libby_crider
about her habit of sending folks beer care packages. Her inspiration? Finding a new way to care for and connect to people during the pandemic. For her—AND for nominators 🍺📦💕
There is a serious missing from
@John_Holl
and
@BeerScribe
here as well. We need industry news leaders like them to use their white male privilege to ask these questions, yes, but ALSO to pay attention to when they’re inappropriately centering themselves as the storytellers.
Hi
@TreeHouseBrewCo
: It looks like you’re hiring for an HR director. A good one will tell you that you need to add salary/ranges to your job listing SOP. In the meantime, will you please add that information to each of these postings?
We. Are. Hiring.
Wanted to take a second to let you know that we have listed a big batch of new positions with several located at our new locations in Sandwich and Deerfield. 🍹
