Richmond’s sidewalks are so bad that this woman’s power chair was stuck on a hump, and she was trapped. I was biking to see a friend and she called out to me for help. No drivers stopped to assist her. Broken sidewalks have real world consequences and limit people’s mobility. ♿️

I’m at the site of the crash where a driver killed my coworker and friend Shawn Soares last night while he was walking on the sidewalk here, and it’s not hard to see that Main Street is not safe. Lower the speed limit, build raised crosswalks, force drivers to slow down.

One of my favorite aspects of Milwaukee has been the abundance of neighborhood bars. We need bars in residential areas to make it easy for folks to get to know their neighbors and not drink and drive!

I participated in a resident focus group on ending parking minimums yesterday. We were all white. Everyone was retired but me. No one rode the bus or biked places but me. This fully non-representative group is who the city will listen to to decide if mandatory parking is good. 🫠

May no one else in our city ever have to witness the blood being power-washed away after a driver kills their colleague & friend. Shawn Soares deserved to live a long, happy life. His death yesterday was preventable. This will keep happening unless we demand safer streets.

The problem here isn’t the outdoor dining. It’s the fact that it’s not in place of the parking. The mobility of disabled people, families with strollers, and all of us is more important than free private property storage.

Saving lives doesn’t have to cost a fortune. This small bump out protects pedestrians in the crosswalk and prevents drivers from parking to close to the intersection, so people can see approaching traffic better. ⚠️

Doing a day trip to Austin, and it’s my first time on an @Amtrak double-decker! 🤩 What I don’t understand is why the train takes 2.5 hours to travel 80 miles. If we want rail to be competitive (let alone a climate solution) it can’t take double the time driving does. 🚆

If this bill from Virginia Sen. @TommyNorment passes, the punishment for rolling through a 🛑 on a 🚲 would be a $500 fine & your bike impounded for 6 months. The maximum fine for doing the same thing in a 🚘 is just $250, no impounding.

Another self-own is that Skyline only operates between 5am to 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 7pm on weekends and city holidays — despite being FULLY AUTOMATIC. No operators means you could run this 24 hours, but the last train leaves downtown at 6:30! 🤦🏼‍♂️

Before Interstates 95 and 64 plowed through Jackson Ward displacing thousands of Black people & businesses, this was a vibrant community. Today, on the eastern edge of Gilpin you can still see the contours of the lives we deemed less valuable than suburbanites’ quick commutes. 🛣️

Over the past few years Berlin has built an extensive network of public bathrooms in parks, near popular sights, and at transit stops. 🚰🚽 They help tourists, the unhoused, and regular residents alike. They are cheap to maintain & incredibly popular. Let’s do this everywhere!

Yes, this is the busiest train station in Virginia—a state with roughly the same population and economic heft as Austria but far worse infrastructure. The only bus downtown comes once an hour weekdays 6am to 7pm.

66% of Richmond is zoned for single-family homes ONLY. The ban on all other types of homes keeps housing artificially expensive so low-income residents & communities of color are excluded by default. To be inclusive we need inclusive zoning. 🏬🏘

For a mid-sized city, Milwaukee has surprisingly good transit. The abundance of 15 minute routes made it easy to get around town without a car. My local friend actually rode the bus for the first time ever with me he was so impressed with my mobility thanks to @RideMCTS . 🚍🏆🚊

None of these cars are going 25mph—the speed limit here on Main St where a driver killed Shawn Soares Thursday. This road is dangerous by design. We know what needs to be done to keep this from happening again, but it’s been total silence from Mayor @LevarStoney since the crash.

Richmond has intentionally reduced many two-lane streets to one lane streets which has slowed down the pace of traffic. Especially with slow drivers driving below the posted speed limit on long stretches of a street! This is terrible for drivers and terrible for our economy!

“We know that we can’t pave our way out of congestion here in Virginia.” - @GovernorVA Adding one more lane to I-95 would have cost $12 billion and within a decade would have been just as congested as the interstate is today. The entire rail initiative costs just $3.7 billion.
