One of the best business lessons I’ve ever gotten came from video game streamer @NICKMERCS . “I eat, we all eat!” Nick was streaming and his squad had just won like $50k in a Warzone tournament. The whole stream turned into a massive party - music, Nick was going off, chat was…

@searchliaison @nichepursuits Genuine question - why are large sites like New York Magazine, CNN, Tom’s Guide, CNET, Forbes, and Business Insider not deemed unhelpful in the extreme when they write unrelated content purely targeting search engines. @VikasAgr1984 @dvassallo You should go look at Lifestage to see how well FB builds copycat social media companies. They’ve tried to copy Snapchat four times and failed miserably. Or Facebook Gaming’s attempt to be Twitch… LOL. Etc, etc, etc… FB knows how to inject ads. That’s it.

Someone DM’d just now and asked, “You have 2700 followers and you write stuff like this “Dan” post. What will you change when you have 5000 followers?” What? Why? If I had 5k, 50k, or 500k followers, I’d still post the same goober nonsense that I post now. I’m me. With…

A lot of “bigger creators” give really bad advice to people just starting out. Is it malicious? Not always. Sometimes it’s just confirmation bias - they see what worked for them and then they think that’s “the way”. Where it gets bad is with “meta” creators - these are the…

Here’s my rule: If you see someone doing something unethical and parasitic in its intent just because it “works”, it’s not “good marketing”. Ethics matter. Morality matters. We don’t always get it right. But don’t glorify shitty behaviour.

My wife made this painting for me for my home office because I saw something like it in a TV show and said I liked it. That’s actual gold leaf in the painting.

Google’s search engine has gotten stupider over 2023. The quality of the results to actually help me with what I look for has declined considerably. The quality of the content they surface is often very low - the SERPS have the same vibe that they did back when sites like…

Watching people question and criticize Elon Musk on Twitter over whatever he wants to rename this app is laughable. In the last 15 years he's built: - The most valuable car manufacturer in the world - The best space transportation company in the world - The most functional and…

Prune who you follow on Twitter fairly regularly, that’s my top tip. People talk about “being authentic” or whatever the hack of the week is, but they’re all nonsense. If you enjoy scrolling your “Following” tab and engaging with the people there, Twitter will work for you.…

Apparently, a webinar happened while I was asleep last night. Good luck to everyone who said it was "life-changing". If you're still consistently applying what you took away from it in 100 days, maybe it will be. If not, then it was just entertainment for you.

I’m thinking of doing a weekly “Spaces” chat here called, “Shoot the Shit with Sean.” Hour or two of just talking about various things that people find interesting.

I’m now seeing five tweets a day with people telling you how to run a “six figure business” for less than $500/mth in tools. I mean, we get it. We understood it the first 46 times people tweeted the same basic list. The lack of originality is mind numbing. Please stop…

I've started referring to the strategy that big publishers use where they take their overall authority and create content to rank for anything: Gorilla SEO As in, "800lbs Gorilla". So when you see Forbes and NYT ranking for "best air fryers 2024" - that's Gorilla SEO.

Tomorrow is my 49th birthday and as I was thinking about life today, one thing struck me as a massive change I've seen in business over the years... The RAPID acceleration of the intelligence of small business owners because of the internet. I think back to the 80s and even…

I have less than zero interest in see paywalled content in SERPs. One of the single worst experiences as a Google user is clicking a result and being sent to the site only to find out you can’t read the content. No problem with paywalled content, just shouldn’t be in SERPs.

@rustybrick I mentioned paywall and gated content in my tweet not as some type of lecture but guidance because it's something any publisher doing gated content might want to understand. Gated content isn't something that our crawler can see, unless publishers let us in. If they do, we can…

Let’s play a game. Why is @ItsKieranDrew popular? The obvious answer for people that don’t want to scratch the surface is that he’s a good writer, he’s personable, and he’s consistent. You’d be right if you ended there but you wouldn’t learn anything. Allow me to explain……

For smaller publishers and niche site owners, “building a brand” is a reactionary waste of time. Start by asking yourself this question: “How many small websites do you visit frequently by typing in their URL in the address bar or your browser?” None. That’s the honest answer…

The real villain here is Google. Google found one of the very best business models of all time, skimming all the surplus profit off of the entire free open internet. This is the natural end state of that process.

Any idiot can be a contrarian on the internet. It doesn't take any original thinking or talent to just lash out mindlessly at stuff - particularly popular ideas. But does anyone benefit from that beyond the momentary rush of attacking something you don't like? I like to point…

There's an uptick in bullshite on here at the moment. There's a ton of people trying to convince you that you can "just build a personal brand" around the idea of doing nothing and become successful. Who pays people to do nothing? Nobody. Or people who are like, "Hot damn, I…
