One of the underlying themes in MIT SMRâs summer 2025 issue is how narrow definitions of success limit possibilities.

Excited to see our article (with @LesliePerlow) featured in @mitsmr!
Decades of psychology research suggest that there are three core qualities of experience that people need in life: joy, achievement, and meaningfulness. Everyone needs at least a minimum amount of all three core elements. https://t.co/2PjtXD9QFC

Our work in @WSJ on why people struggle to unplug from work is out! We (@timkundro @casherbelinda @michhristian) argue that pressure to be âalways onâ leaves those who detach feeling ashamed - not replenished - and offer a few ideas to try to fix this.

We found that negative multicultural experiences can actually *increase* the intergroup biases that people hold. We also show that this likely occurs because negative multicultural experiences lead people to hold counterproductive intergroup ideologies and worldviews. (5/6)

So, we asked what happens to peopleâs attitudes and worldviews when they have a negative experience abroad? We explore this in 5 studies, including one where we âsentâ people on a negative (or positive) trip to Brazil using VR (with help from @steven_king & @uncbluesky)! (4/6)

Yet, a lot of the research and anecdotes on this focus only on the *positive* aspects of multicultural experiences (think Eat, Pray, Love). But, like any experience in life, sometimes the experiences people have abroad are negative. (3/6)

Research suggests that multicultural experiences, like working, living, or traveling abroad, can beneficially change the way people view others and the world. The general argument behind that is that having new experiences abroad opens up peopleâs minds and worldviews. (2/6)

We expect our bosses to see through flattery. But what happens when they donât? In a new paper in JPSP, we (@ovulsezer, #NadavKlein) find that rewarding flattery makes leaders seem like they have naively âfallen for flattery,â harming their reputation and their organization. đ§ľ
