I had no business being in America. I was a street hawker in Badagry from a relatively poor family. Without that lottery win, I’ll probably still be roaming Badagry, Okoko, and Ojo as a hawker. I commend those who succeed in Nigeria, in America success is a bit easier.

I don’t talk about my progression enough. From a cleaner who cleans up vomits on the staircase, and pickup trash in the parking lot in freezing temperatures whilst earning $8.25/hr to a senior role at a fortune 50 company on a six figure pay in less than 4 years. That’s mad.

She’d insert “Jesus” in everything. If I told her I drove home, she’d say no, Jesus did. I passed a cert, no, Jesus did. She’d send me prayers at 5 am in the morning to recite. I swear she made me hate Jesus for like a month, cos I thought he was stealing my shine.

Most people don’t understand the economics of discipline. Poor people have very little room for accommodating risk, and an ill-disciplined kid is one of those risks. There’s a reason why beating kids is predominantly in developing countries.

All that “take away their PS5” and “sit down and talk to them” are great options, but they’re only available to people within a specific economic spectrum. All that shit you see on social media/movies on disciplining kids doesn’t apply to some random poor bloke in Badagry.

Your biggest challenge when it comes to career advancement is not other people, it's your personal brand. You're never going to be a "senior" anything if people can’t imagine you in a more senior role because they’re used to thinking of you in a certain way.
