after highlighting the two-year milestone of my sunday brunches some days ago, i received questions that stressed the importance of a long-form piece i had been delaying.
from its humble beginnings to the rituals that make it special, here’s the story.
ever since i started earning more than i reasonably needed to spend in a month on essentials (food, utilities, etc), i started paying myself a "salary" every month, savings became effortless and by design.
i was born at the right time. i have witnessed exponential advances in tech. my early years were crude enough to strongly relate to when humanity began to harness electricity. life expectancy suggests i am only halfway done - interesting times ahead.
happy 37th birthday to me.
Let's pretend for a moment that thugs weren't paid to disrupt the protests. Instead of holding the police accountable for not doing anything to protect the rights of peaceful protesters from miscreants, this is what we get. Our democracy is an illusion tbvh.
I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4pm today, 20th October,2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders must be found on the streets.
the reaction to piggyvest's tweet showcasing their safelock interest rates at ~12% underscores how deeply ponzi schemes, wonder banks, and pervasive financial illiteracy have scarred the nigerian financial mindset.
history is being brazenly rewritten and it's not even up to a year post hoc.
for instance, in lagos, "yoruba ronu" was used to subvert the gubernatorial elections (with multiple reports of ethnic-fueled violence) and keep the incumbent in office.
at 19,260 naira a month, starlink is well positioned to put a lot of nigerian internet service providers to shame - as long as you can pony up ~274k for the kit. looks like a worthwhile investment if you care enough about staying connected at home.
sometimes you like a tweet on its merit, and then you read the replies and realize you've publicly taken a side in a twitter fight you are oblivious to and have no interest engaging in.
i learned a bit about igbo traditional marriage rites at my brother and his best friend’s wedding on saturday. ate some kolanut too. here are some pictures i took of the occasion.
@iaboyeji
why are content creators doing the government's work?
also, are you sure you wouldn't ask each of those hypothetical creators to train another 100 each? i mean, why stop at 10,000 if we can get a million, right?
"tinubu built lagos" = celebrating mediocrity. its status as a former capital and major port city means lagos was always going to stand out. its leaders failed to efficiently leverage the resources at their disposal to make it truly excellent and chose to hold it hostage instead.
ultimately, true financial growth comes from mindfulness in spending - not just the abundance of resources. resisting the urge to mindlessly splurge today can create a buffer for the uncertainties of tomorrow.
twitter (sorry, x) is wild because i cannot believe i set off a debate on real estate that totally eschewed the nuance of the specific context in which i referenced it.
anyway, quoted below remains my stance on the matter. also, fun fact - i was the buyer.
"invest in real estate"
my ex-landlady who lives and works in the US paid about N35m for my apartment in 2014/5. she sold it for N65m in 2019. sounds like a decent ROI until you realize she made anywhere between a $6k profit and a $27k loss.
my communication style has a bias for dramatic but compressed enunciation, and i love it.
pandering to a growing haste in attributing vividly descriptive language to a reliance on large language models implies a regression to the mean.
i will not be doing that.
it takes a lot of gall to mindlessly spend customer funds to appear larger than life, blame a "hack" that either didn't happen, or was a result of sheer recklessness - given the lack of a postmortem, be on the brink of company collapse, then proceed to dunk on journalists.
i learned this quickly. i used to wonder why the thieving government fails to realize that if basic things worked, they will be able to effortlessly enjoy the luxuries they seem to so desperately crave.
alas, thieves know no better than to grab what's in front of them.
@iaboyeji
@hackSultan
the only person that has referenced aso rock here is the one that has a knack for compulsively absolving the government of its responsibilities.
every year since 2020, i made it a tradition to treat a number of my friends to a curation of gifts for the holidays.
this year, it’s an advent calendar with something for each day leading up to christmas - starting from today!
nigeria is being actively handicapped by the people in power. yet, nigerians are directing their ire at someone who spent the last decade building the fundamentals of a now established industry for venting their frustration.
check the replies to this tweet to see how the dearth of quality education has led to the rise of deranged characters, wearing their lunacy loudly and proudly because a media organization committed the crime of documenting something that happened.
Man of God? Or predatory cult leader?
A ground-breaking investigation into the world famous televangelist preacher, TB Joshua, told by the people closest to him: his Disciples.

as a nigerian startup founder, if you raised a significant round of financing (seed: >$2m; series a: >$8m) in 2021 and are currently laying off staff in 2022 citing macroeconomic conditions, you suck at running a business and are terrible at managing risk.
personally, i “over-explain” because i need the person i am talking to to understand how i arrived at a decision so i don’t have to repeat myself with a similar request or situation in the future. maybe not court level, but it is important to me that my motives are understood.
Over-explaining is a trauma response from walking on eggshells or dealing with emotionally reactive people at a young age. You don’t need court-level proof of why you are or are not doing something. Keep it short. You’re safe now.
being a doctor, it would have been more helpful to eschew condescension and deliver a solution-oriented advice. like, wearing appropriate fingerless gloves for your next gel polish appointment.
i'm happy to report that my swiss visa application was successful. the curse has been lifted, it seems.
looking forward to visiting cern (home to the large hadron collider - the world's most powerful particle accelerator) next month!
third time was indeed, the charm.
i love that babcock offered summer school cos i routinely failed courses i deemed had zero effect on my career in practice, thinking i was smart enough to wing them during exams. i focused on getting them out of the way during summer while interning in the school’s IT department.
i started this over a decade ago and when i recently became unbelievably liquid, i didn't spend a dime until i did the math to determine a reasonable yearly budget, then moved that sum to my 'operations account'.

i'm stripe, the babe in the paper bag 😻
in 2014, i hit some sort of rent jackpot where my salary was 600k a month and my rent was 400k - i took over from a neighbor (who had lived in it for years and was moving out) before my landlady knew to raise the rent for a new tenant.
problem is, i was owed salary for months.
gotta say, it's hilarious seeing mr. jide campaign this hard close to the elections after seemingly abandoning his post for much of the last 12 months while playing omnipresent aide to his principal because they thought lagos was always in the bag.
pro tip: whenever someone makes an argument and attempts to back it up with an assertion that includes "anywhere in the world" especially with regards to policy in nigeria, consider whatever point they are trying to make illogical.
The truth is nobody should own a dollar account in Nigeria. It is not done anywhere in the world. A unified rate would mean we can use our Naira cards abroad. Want to bring Dollar to Nigeria, it should be changed to equivalent of Naira at official rate in your Naira account. Want…
idk but if i ask "who is this and how did you get my number" and your response is "calm down please and hear me out", you're getting blocked. and that's if i ask, cos you're definitely getting aired if you come with "good evening ezra" and proceed to pause for effect.

i understand how easy it is to get caught up in the euphoria of a bigger paycheck or an unexpected windfall. too often, people equate higher earnings with a license to splurge, forgetting their set financial goals or the volatility of life in general.

as the deadline looms, reports coming in indicate bare men are camping in the accuser's mentions, circlejerking at the idea of a last minute drop
my time in seychelles has come to a close and it's a shame my blissful vacation will be terminated by having to experience what is arguably the worst airport in the world - murtala mohammed international airport.
in this thread, people with a single perspective blindly argue that someone with multiple perspectives must be wrong, hinging on the demonstrably false belief that they don't know enough of their single perspective - which is unfortunately dictated by politically motivated data.
I’ve been all over the great city of Seoul🇰🇷 this week and if this city has 10 million people with it’s sheer scale and population density, there is no way Lagos 🇳🇬 can have 20 million people.
you wouldn't believe it but this was conceived as analogy to a situation that involves supposedly working in government but not being in support of the ruling party, in a democracy.
not to get into a dick (read: salary) measuring contest but paystack is almost eight years old and i am yet to draw anything close to $10,000 in salaries. in fact, my current monthly take-home (factoring in today's exchange rate) is roughly $3,500.
That video is the reason why you never see Nigerian atheists abuse Islam the way they abuse Christianity every Sunday on twitter.

i have come to the conclusion that the biggest challenge with driving a tesla in a country that's not officially supported are the software issues that will inevitably come up.
