"Jihad" is a bit more democratic, invokes been swept away by the struggle, by the call, by the moment and one's duty.
Crusades were the pope's solution to not being an Earthly regent. Soldiers on loan.
Honestly, “Jihad” should be the default word for any quasi-religious war of total conquest and obliteration. “Crusade” just doesn’t have the same ring, and definitely doesn’t convey the same level of zeal.
